PENNY & SPARROW Come to Boulder Theater This Fall
by BWW News Desk - May 22, 2017

There are things that we ought to be afraid of.  Things that, rightfully, send cold sweat nightmares.  For kids it can be anything from the darkness under a bed, or strangers, or crossing a busy street.  For adults it might change face a bit and become things like sickness, job security, or heartbreak.  And sometimes, when you point the flashlight right at the thing you're terrified of, you declaw it.  You take its mask off and it returns to being an empty, boring closet with nothing inside to harm you.  Or maybe the light shows an unexpected beauty in the place of what you thought was horrific. Other times, though, you aim the beam straight into the pitch black and the thing that you prayed wasn't real, the one with all the teeth, is right there smiling at you. (more...)

BWW REVIEW: American Ballet Theatre's LE CORSAIRE
by Wesley Doucette - Jun 19, 2017

Petipa, who of the three choreographers listed in the program has the most influence on American Ballet Theatre's Le Corsaire, knows how to create a dramatic excuse for dance. With a few notable exceptions, 'Giselle' and 'Romeo and Juliet' come instantly to my mind, declarative dance which spends twenty minutes to hammer out an 'I love you' through pirouettes can be draining and leave the audience thinking 'Just spit it out.' Petipa, clearly seeing this dramatic shortcoming, forms his ballets around vast pageants, processionals, and presentations. The Black Swan seduces by exhibition at a banquet, the last glorious act of The Sleeping Beauty is a virtually plotless celebration, and practically the entire Nutcracker is a series of vignettes formed around a presentation. Le Corsaire is no different. The first act features the presentation of several ballerinas. The second act is centered around the principal dancers performing to 'entertain the group'. Then, in act three, a pasha spends a lengthy amount of time in a dream sequence which features, what else, women and flowers. Superficially, this all works wonderfully and the dancers shamelessly take this opportunity to exploit their most acrobatic technique. The piece's issues begin upon the introduction of the words 'slave girls.' (more...)

BWW Review: Alhambra Dinner Theatre presents ANNIE
by Heather Vollman - Jul 5, 2017

ANNIE opened at The Alhambra Dinner Theatre last week to a house full of excited young ladies, local theatre lovers, and even those who aren't as familiar with the Jacksonville theatre scene, as the timelessly successful musical tends to draw large crowds who know every song from childhood. With iconic characters, familiar scenery, and a Tony Award winning score, a fellow directing friend from my past once said, "It's really hard to mess this one up," and I tend to agree. There are several elements of this production that left me disappointed, however, the overarching themes and values, along with several outstanding performances, are endearing and inspiring. BWW Interview: 'I Feel Most Myself When I Am Acting': A Conversation with GREASE's Chelsea Williams
by Carla Maria Verdino-Sllwold - Jul 18, 2017

"I think other people first recognized that I was geared to being a performer. I didn't necessarily recognize that myself, but when I performed in my first musical in high school, I suddenly said to myself 'Nothing else makes me feel like this. I felt these amazing vibrations between me and the audience and me and the rest of the people on stage; I felt connected to the world - more like my true self myself that I had ever felt before, and that's how I knew." Chelsea Williams is talking about discovering her vocation as an actress and the creative journey which has taken her to the nation's leading theatres. This July and August the Windham, Maine, native returns to her home state to play Sandy in Maine State Music Theatre's production of Grease, which begins its run at the Pickard Theater on July 19. Williams made her MSMT debut last summer as Sophie in MSMT's blockbuster hit, Mamma Mia!, reprising the role that constituted her big career breakthrough. Like Mamma Mia!, Grease is blessed with an unforgettable score and a story that is both endearing and totally joyous, and the new MSMT production in which Williams stars promises to be the mega hit of the company's summer season. BWW Review: Atlantis Has Scored Yet Another Triumph in KINKY BOOTS

The Cyndi Lauper-Harvey Fierstein award-winning musical 'Kinky Boots' has finally strutted into Manila, and if the spontaneous standing ovations and full houses since opening night are any indication, Lola, the indomitable drag queen at the center of the show, could be right--'I came for one thing only--adulation!' A.J. Croce with Robbie Fulks Comes to NYC to Celebrate Album Release
by BWW News Desk - Jul 12, 2017

Some artists are afforded the chance to tell their personal stories as they see fit, at a particular moment when they know the time has come. But for many, there is no choice -the story emerges hardwired to the music and they become forever identified with it no matter how their story may evolve or change. A.J. Croce has been inextricably linked to a version of his own story by virtue of his name. He's experienced a lifetime of comparisons to a father he lost at age two, whose music bares little resemblance to his own output yet still serves as a reference point despite the years that have passed and the many iconic mentors who have stepped in to offer their counsel, creativity, and endorsement throughout his long career.  Amy Black has always been drawn to soul singers. But it wasn't until she began exploring her own southern roots for her last album, The Muscle Shoals Sessions, that she found her musical sweet spot - and knew her next stop had to be the place where blues and soul converge (and where she herself was conceived); where Al Green, Otis Redding and so many others spun grit and groove into some of the world's most beloved tunes. So she traveled from her Nashville home to Soulsville U.S.A. and joined forces with several top musical architects to lay down the sound she was meant to make - the sound of Memphis. (more...)
