BWW Recap: HOUDINI You Think You Are?
by Meg Wood - Sep 2, 2014

Harry Houdini – America's premier Escape Artist, Showman extraordinaire, potentially a template for that most American of literary creations, the Superhero, and, if you believe the premise of the current miniseries on The History Channel, a person psychologically addicted to running away from his own person and reality. HOUDINI, the two-parter that began Monday night and concludes on Tuesday on the History Channel, is based on a psychiatrist's biography of the great performer, which was subtitled “A Mind in Chains.” However, from the show and from its star Adrien Brody's, portrayal, he was less a man in chains than a man on the run. Inspiring Fundraiser Originates on Geoff Notkin's "Club Space Rock" Forum
by BWW News Desk - Aug 29, 2014

A discussion on Club Space Rock (CSR), an online forum and social network created by Geoff Notkin of TV's Meteorite Men, has led to a unique crowdfunding campaign started by members of the forum. The $5,000 raised will help a deserving CSR member take her first meteorite hunting trip. Notkin started Club Space Rock (http://meteorites.ning.com) in 2009 as a place for scientists, academics, professional meteorite hunters, dealers, collectors, and enthusiasts to share news and information about meteorites. CSR quickly became the world's largest online meteorite forum and currently has over 3,300 members across the globe. One of those members, Marissa Fanady, is a 23-year-old college student and amateur astronomer who became fascinated by space rocks several years ago, when she witnessed a brilliant meteor shower that happened to peak on her birthday. After purchasing her first authentic meteorite from Notkin's company, Aerolite Meteorites, she began dreaming of a real-life expedition to unearth a meteorite of her own. Fanady's challenge is more than just financial, however. Born with Spinal Muscular Atrophy, she was not expected to live past the age of 13. Marissa has never walked on her own and has been in a wheelchair since age 4. 'My Muscle function is decreasing with every year. As my Muscles get weak and fade, they shrink and get tight. Eventually, I will lose everything and my life.' When Fanady posted on Club Space Rock about her desire to go meteorite hunting, her intent was only to gather information from experienced hunters about possible locations. But a group of fellow forum members, led by Canadian geologist Rogan Hennie, was touched by Marissa's story and wanted to help. Hennie recalls, 'Before we knew it, we were asking, 'How can we get this girl, one of our own, out into the field so she can experience what we experience and may even take for granted?' Hennie set up a campaign on the crowdfunding platform Indiegogo to raise $5,000, which will cover round-trip flight for Marissa and two nurses to the meteorite hunting location, as well as meals, accommodations, a wheelchair-accessible van rental and miscellaneous expenses. 'Something amazing like this never could have transpired in the pre-internet, pre-crowdfunding world,' said Notkin. 'I've had the pleasure of meeting Marissa in person, and I could not be happier that our friendly, forward-thinking, international community at Club Space Rock has come together to make her spectacular dream come true. I wish her and her team the best space rock hunting!' Michael Mulgrew, an experienced meteorite hunter and Club Space Rock member who will serve as expedition guide, has chosen to cover his own travel expenses so that every dollar raised helps Marissa achieve her goal. Other forum members have donated meteorites and equipment from their personal collections as perks for donors. Since the campaign has reached its original $5,000 goal, any additional funds received will be donated to the Muscular Dystrophy Association. While looking forward to her upcoming meteorite hunting adventure, Faraday says the friendships forged on Club Space Rock have already changed her life. 'I used to think my life was over and that there'd be no point in trying to make a life, when my disease will just take it all away,' she said. 'But I realize now that we must make the most out of life while we can, to be able to look back and say it was all worth everything. Even though I face many difficult challenges, I can see the sky's the limit with such amazing people by my side lending a helping hand.' To donate to Marissa's Indiegogo fundraiser, visit: https://www.indiegogo.com/projects/marissa-s-meteorite. The campaign will close on August 30, 2014 at 11:59 p.m. PT. For more information on Club Space Rock, visit: http://meteorites.ning.com For more information on Aerolite Meteorites, visit: http://www.AeroliteMeteorites.org Media wishing to speak with Geoff Notkin should contact Becca Gladden at limelightwriting@aol.com. iLoveKickboxing's 2nd Annual 45 Day Transformation Challenge Kicks Off in UT
by BWW News Desk - Aug 28, 2014

This week marks the beginning of iLoveKickboxing's 2nd annual 45 day transformation challenge, and the clients of iLoveKickboxing-Sandy couldn't be more excited. Kickboxing classes at iLoveKickboxing-Sandy and Facebook pages have been buzzing with excitement about this year's transformation challenge that boasts a $5,000 grand prize for the national first place winner. Last year iLoveKickboxing-Sandy and Personal Mastery Martial Arts had two students who won national prizes - Quincy Lister and Brian Ellis. Quincy won the 2013 transformation challenge 2nd place national prize of $1,000 and Brian won the 6th place national prize of $200. The contest required them to not only provide before and after pictures and attend regular Kickboxing classes, but to also follow a good meal plan at home. Just like this year, the contest last year was about more than just weight loss though. Winners were chosen by an overall transformation in body, mind, and quality of life. Last year, at the end of the contest Brian said, '45 days ago, I could barely do a pushup or a sit up. I was 232 pounds and that's at least 30 pounds over-weight. I had no energy and was sad and depressed. I needed to lose weight and get in shape! I was hoping to lose 30 pounds, but I also knew that was a lot to lose in 45 days, not impossible, but a lot. I started going to my iLoveKickboxing classes. Some days I went twice, once in the morning and once at night. After about a week and a half, I could feel the difference, both in my attitude and in my body! I felt better, I looked better, and I could feel my body firming up. I regained the desire to go out and do things - bicycle, swim, jet ski, hike - all sorts of physical activities. On a hike with my family, not only could I keep up, but I was leading the way! So far I've lost about 20 pounds. Not quite my final goal, but a lot for 45 days. Especially since some of that is fat that has now turned to Muscle! One thing I learned: exercise isn't enough! A change in diet is what I needed and still need. I'm well on my way to reaching my weight and fitness goals now. Thanks iLoveKickboxing!' Quincy said, 'Staying on the nutrition plan was challenging at times, especially on special occasions and weekends but working so hard in my kickboxing classes really motivated me not to undo all my hard work by eating things that are bad for my body. I felt more motivated to eat clean and healthy and one of the best and most beneficial things that I will take away from this challenge is my increased awareness about my body and my overall health. I now make it a priority to schedule in kickboxing classes throughout my week, I put them in my schedule just as I do any other work or life priority, and I am actively conscious about how I am nourishing my body. I feel like my entire outlook on life and making myself, my body, and my overall health a priority has changed for the better and I truly owe so much to iLoveKickboxing for this amazing life transformation.' This year iLoveKickboxing-Sandy hopes to see even more of their students not only win big cash in national prizes, but become happier and healthier as they reap the benefits of reaching their health and fitness goals. iLoveKickboxing-Sandy manager, Brittany Alleman Ayers, said, 'I love seeing the difference this program makes in people's lives. Every time someone comes to class and tells me how much more energy they have, how much weight they have lost, or some other way that they have become happier and healthier it makes me so excited for them! That's what the iLoveKickboxing program is all about. I can't wait to see everyone and hear their stories at the end of this transformation challenge because I just know that it is going to do amazing things.'
