California Athletic Trainers' Association Offers Tips for Exercising in the Heat
by BWW News Desk - Sep 19, 2014

Temperatures are skyrocketing and that means hot weather and high humidity - both serious concerns to people of all ages who enjoy spending time outdoors. The California Athletic Trainers' Association (CATA) warns that heat illness can affect anyone who overexerts themselves under the sun. The people most at risk include overweight or larger athletes, the elderly and children whose bodies are ill-equipped to handle the heat. A study conducted by researchers at the Center for Injury Research and Policy of The Research Institute at Nationwide Children's Hospital found that an estimated 54,983 exertional heat-related injuries (average of 5,500 cases each year) were treated in emergency departments during a 10-year study period. Overall, nearly half of the injuries were sustained by children and adolescents 19 years of age and younger. 'Exertional heat stroke (EHS) is the second most common cause of death among young athletes,' says Michael West, president of the CATA. Fatalities due to heat illness can be as high as 80 percent if immediate treatment is not received. However, with early recognition and immediate cooling, the mortality rate can be reduced to 10 percent. 'There is no reason for anyone to die from heat stroke or suffer from heat-related illness,' West adds. 'It's completely preventable.' The CATA recommends paying particular attention to athletes since 75 percent of heat-related injuries occur during sports or exercise. And those that require additional padding or helmets, like football, wrestling and even marching band are especially at risk. The CATA has prepared a list of important tips that people of all ages can follow to enjoy physical activity and also reduce the risk of exertional heat illness during the hot months of summer. Heat-related Ailments There are three stages of heat-related illness, each with very distinct characteristics. By learning to recognize the symptoms, you can prevent the problem from escalating into a potentially life threatening incident. Heat Cramps: Characterized by involuntary Muscle spasms, profuse sweating, normal pulse and respirations and possible dizziness. Treatment: Sit in a cool place, massage cramps with ice, stretch and drink water and diluted electrolyte drinks. Heat Exhaustion: Skin becomes cool and clammy, profuse sweating, dizziness or disorientation, breathing becomes rapid and shallow and pulse is weak. Treatment: Remove wet clothing and equipment, cool rapidly (ice water on skin or submerge in ice bath), use fan if possible and may need IV fluids. Heat Stroke: Increased irritability followed by apathy, very disoriented and unsteady, pulse is strong and rapid, skin is hot and dry, blood pressure will drop, convulsions, and possibly coma. Treatment: Activate 911 response immediately - this is a medical emergency and can lead to death. Cool rapidly with ice or submerge in ice bath, treat for shock, and transfer to trauma center as soon as possible. All three types of heat-related illness should be treated without delay because progression from one stage to the next can happen suddenly and without warning. To avoid heat related illness: - Stay properly hydrated with water and diluted electrolyte drinks. When the body becomes dehydrated it loses its ability to properly cool itself. - Make sure you acclimatize to your environment; you are more likely to suffer from heat-related illness when you exercise outdoors in the heat than if you spend all day indoors in a controlled environment. - Remember to rehydrate after daily exercise; track your weight before and after exercise so you know how much water you need to replace (8 oz. of water for every pound of body weight lost). - Wear loose comfortable clothing; synthetics are best for wicking water from the skin. - If you have a pre-existing health problem, consult your doctor before jumping into outdoor activities. About the California Athletic Trainers' Association (CATA): Athletic trainers are health care professionals who specialize in the provision of physical medicine and rehabilitation services, serving as physician extenders in the prevention, assessment and treatment of acute and chronic injuries and illnesses. The California Athletic Trainers' Association represents and supports 2,200 members of the athletic training profession through communication and education. CATA is fighting to pass legislation that will recognize the proper definition and scope of practice for the profession in California, the only state in the U.S. that doesn't require regulation for athletic trainers. Fusion Bodybuilding Offers Purple.K Creatine
by BWW News Desk - Sep 11, 2014

Leading supplement company, Fusion Bodybuilding is known to offer Canada's number one selling creatine capsules called Purple K Creatine. These unique workout supplements take advantage of a patented ingredient that increases the effectiveness of creatine by increasing its bio-availability, stimulating energy production and combating acidosis. Compared to standard creatine products, Purple K Creatine provides an unparalleled level of strength to your workouts that is sure to be appreciated by any passionate bodybuilder. Standard creatine products possess a pH of between 0 and 6.9, causing them to be converted into creatinine when mixed with liquids or stomach acid, Purple K Creatine avoids this problem thanks to its unique ingredient Kre-Alkalyn. This patented ingredient is used to create the pH-corrected creatine molecule present in Purple K Creatine, allowing it to remain unchanged in liquids and stomach acid and subsequently increasing its bioavailability. With a pH of 12, 100% of the creatine present in Purple K Creatine is utilized by your Muscles during bodybuilding. Additionally, this pH-corrected creatine prevents acidosis, a common cause of Muscle failure during strenuous exercise. Production of both adenosine triphosphate (ATP) and phosphocreatine (PCr), two key energy molecules used by your Muscles during exercise, is increased by Purple K Creatine. Whereas standard creatine products may still increase levels of these molecules, the breakdown of creatine into creatinine minimizes their effectiveness compared to Purple K Creatine. If you're serious about maximizing the efficiency of your bodybuilding routine, using Purple K Creatine is a great choice that provides plenty of noticeable benefits. About Fusion Bodybuilding Based out of Ontario, Canada, Fusion Bodybuilding is a nutraceutical company that uses their passion and belief in bodybuilding to provide the most effective bodybuilding supplements that they possibly can since 1998. All of their products are designed specifically for bodybuilders and utilize sound science to ensure that each supplement is unique and effective. (more...)

Inspiring Fundraiser Originates on Geoff Notkin's "Club Space Rock" Forum
by BWW News Desk - Aug 29, 2014

A discussion on Club Space Rock (CSR), an online forum and social network created by Geoff Notkin of TV's Meteorite Men, has led to a unique crowdfunding campaign started by members of the forum. The $5,000 raised will help a deserving CSR member take her first meteorite hunting trip. Notkin started Club Space Rock (http://meteorites.ning.com) in 2009 as a place for scientists, academics, professional meteorite hunters, dealers, collectors, and enthusiasts to share news and information about meteorites. CSR quickly became the world's largest online meteorite forum and currently has over 3,300 members across the globe. One of those members, Marissa Fanady, is a 23-year-old college student and amateur astronomer who became fascinated by space rocks several years ago, when she witnessed a brilliant meteor shower that happened to peak on her birthday. After purchasing her first authentic meteorite from Notkin's company, Aerolite Meteorites, she began dreaming of a real-life expedition to unearth a meteorite of her own. Fanady's challenge is more than just financial, however. Born with Spinal Muscular Atrophy, she was not expected to live past the age of 13. Marissa has never walked on her own and has been in a wheelchair since age 4. 'My Muscle function is decreasing with every year. As my Muscles get weak and fade, they shrink and get tight. Eventually, I will lose everything and my life.' When Fanady posted on Club Space Rock about her desire to go meteorite hunting, her intent was only to gather information from experienced hunters about possible locations. But a group of fellow forum members, led by Canadian geologist Rogan Hennie, was touched by Marissa's story and wanted to help. Hennie recalls, 'Before we knew it, we were asking, 'How can we get this girl, one of our own, out into the field so she can experience what we experience and may even take for granted?' Hennie set up a campaign on the crowdfunding platform Indiegogo to raise $5,000, which will cover round-trip flight for Marissa and two nurses to the meteorite hunting location, as well as meals, accommodations, a wheelchair-accessible van rental and miscellaneous expenses. 'Something amazing like this never could have transpired in the pre-internet, pre-crowdfunding world,' said Notkin. 'I've had the pleasure of meeting Marissa in person, and I could not be happier that our friendly, forward-thinking, international community at Club Space Rock has come together to make her spectacular dream come true. I wish her and her team the best space rock hunting!' Michael Mulgrew, an experienced meteorite hunter and Club Space Rock member who will serve as expedition guide, has chosen to cover his own travel expenses so that every dollar raised helps Marissa achieve her goal. Other forum members have donated meteorites and equipment from their personal collections as perks for donors. Since the campaign has reached its original $5,000 goal, any additional funds received will be donated to the Muscular Dystrophy Association. While looking forward to her upcoming meteorite hunting adventure, Faraday says the friendships forged on Club Space Rock have already changed her life. 'I used to think my life was over and that there'd be no point in trying to make a life, when my disease will just take it all away,' she said. 'But I realize now that we must make the most out of life while we can, to be able to look back and say it was all worth everything. Even though I face many difficult challenges, I can see the sky's the limit with such amazing people by my side lending a helping hand.'
