BWW Review: STAGEright's TOXIC AVENGER – Fun but as Solid as Toxic Waste
by Jay Irwin - Sep 19, 2016

There's nothing wrong with a bit of mindless fun at the theater. Some of my happiest memories are sitting in a darkened theater laughing hysterically at Mormons or man eating plants or oversexed puppets. But while the fun in those instances may be base and mindless they were all still backed up by a well crafted and well put together show and that's where "The Toxic Avenger Musical", currently being offered from STAGEright, falls flat. Sure, it's goofy, in your face, over the top fun but appealing to our love of things a little bit gross and repeatedly calling someone a slut cannot replace good writing and pacing. (more...)

BWW Review: SUNDAY IN THE PARK WITH GEORGE Opens Huntington Theatre Company Season

SUNDAY IN THE PARK WITH GEORGE opens the Huntington Theatre Company's 2016-2017 season. Directed by Artistic Director Peter DuBois, with Music Direction by Eric Stern, it features a large and talented ensemble with a mix of Boston theater artists and those with Broadway credits. Jenni Barber is a delight as Dot/Marie, but Adam Chanler-Berat does not match her intensity as George. The production looks great, sounds good, but feels less filling than a Sondheim show should. BWW Interview: Isa Briones of EVITA at Cabrillo Music Theatre
by Cary Ginell - Oct 20, 2016

If you have the opportunity to see Cabrillo Music Theatre's splendid production of Evita this weekend, you will no doubt be drawn to the electrifying performances by its stars, Cassandra Murphy, as Eva Peron, and Marc Ginsburg, as Che (profiled in our October 4 story - ). But there is another, younger, performer who we predict will be a big star, whether it is on the stage, in films, or on television. Her name is Isa Briones. Isa, who is just 17, is a high school senior who comes out of the ensemble to play the part of Argentinean dictator Juan Peron's unnamed mistress, who gets shooed out of the president's palace by Eva and sings the lament, 'Another Suitcase in Another Hall.' It is one of the most quietly exquisite moments in the entire musical. Prior to playing in Evita, Isa was astonishing in Pico Playhouse's production of Next to Normal, in which she played the part of confused teen Natalie Goodman. We had a chance to visit with Isa, and found out that not only is she no novice in the world of performing, she has a perceptive and mature perspective on performing and working within a character in a musical. VCOS: Isa, when I looked at your website and checked out your credits, I was stunned by all the things you've done and that you are still only seventeen. It helps when your parents are in show business, too, doesn't it? (more...)

New Book Gives Hope to People with Parkinson's Disease
by BWW News Desk - Oct 19, 2016

With an estimated seven to 10 million people around the world suffering from Parkinson's disease - a progressive disorder of the nervous system that affects the ability to walk, talk, balance and move - treatment is more important than ever. Enter Rock Steady Boxing, a nonprofit organization that uses the principles of boxing training to help those with the disease fight to stay as healthy as they can. A new book released by Dog Ear Publishing features the story of these inspiring fighters and how they have moved toward being 'rock steady' in their lives. 'I Am Rock Steady: Fighting Back Against Parkinson's Disease' tells the story of Rock Steady Boxing (RSB), founded in 2006 in Indianapolis. RSB now has hundreds of affiliate locations around the country and the world, and it's still growing. Readers will be inspired by stories like RSB founder Scott Newman, a prosecutor who learned he had early onset Parkinson's when he was just 40, who began one-on-one boxing training and improved his physical health and daily functioning immensely. Readers also hear about a young woman with Parkinson's disease who learned she was pregnant, a pastor who gains bodily strength and camaraderie during through boxing, an IBM software engineer who helped bring the Rock Steady program to New England and stories of others who have successfully battled Parkinson's with the help of Rock Steady Boxing. Recent medical studies, including one at the Cleveland Clinic, focus on intense 'forced' exercise and indicate that certain types of exercise are neuro-protective - they may actually slow the progression of disease. As described in the book, Rock Steady Boxing uses stretches to help with Muscle stiffness, punching to steady tremors, voice activities to strengthen vocal chords and footwork to promote balance. Research shows the program can help delay, decrease or even reverse symptoms of Parkinson's. Ultimately, 'I Am Rock Steady' provides a message of hope for those who have the disease or care for someone who does. Author Julie Young is an award-winning freelance writer and author in the Indianapolis area. Her work has appeared in publications such as the 'Indianapolis Star,' 'Indianapolis Monthly' and She has written two books for the Complete Idiot's Guide series, six books on local history, and a young adult novel: 'Fifteen Minutes of Fame.'
