BWW Review: PAUL TAYLOR DANCE COMPANY at The Kennedy Center
by Frances Steiner - May 31, 2016

Paul Taylor is a trailblazer of modern dance. As one of the most important living American artists, sending his company to perform at The Kennedy Center in the nation's capital is fitting-his choreography is dance Americana. Taylor's company offered two alternating programs. Program B, performed on Thursday night and Saturday afternoon, showed the strengths of his choreography's captivating lines, precise musicality, and overall wit. (more...)

BWW Review: DEBORAH ZALL Project Illuminates Archetypes at The Graham Studio
by Juan Michael Porter II - May 19, 2016

I longed to see more. One would love to see the Martha Graham Dance Company commission a new from Ms. Zall. Unlike their usual fare, she clearly understands stagecraft and is able to communicate in the language of their founder. It seems to me that all she needs is the opportunity. Denise Vale, the Graham company's Artistic Associate was in the audience. Perhaps she will communicate what a boon it would be to work with Ms. Zall to her colleagues. (more...)

BWW Review: BUGLISI DANCE THEATRE Celebrates Women of Distinction
by Juan Michael Porter II - Jun 9, 2016

Like sand through the hourglass, so is the choreography of Jacqulyn Buglisi. No one can argue that Ms. Buglisi knows how to craft beautifully lush movement. Her dances are ephemeral yet timeless, like a conjured dream held in stasis. But in the wrong hands, this ravishing quality becomes smothering. Luckily Ms. Buglisi formed her original company with Terese Capucilli, Christine Dakin, and Donlin Foreman. At the time they were filling a void left in the wake of Martha Graham's death. More than this, they were four of the most talented dancers on the planet coming into their own as creators while using their own incomparable bodies as tools of deliverance; how could the results be anything less than spectacular? Though one wonders, was it the work or the performers? We found out on June 7th, 2016 at The Ailey Citigroup Theatre during the gala performance of Buglisi Dance Theatre's 23rd Season. (more...)

BWW Dance Review: NIMBUS DANCE WORKS Sets Hearts Ablaze in Geolocate
by Juan Michael Porter II - Jun 7, 2016

The guerdon in attending a repertory company's concert is being able to savor the variety of work on display. Such was the case for Nimbus Dance Works' recent concert at Gibney Dance Center's Agnes Varis Performing Arts Center. Founded by Artistic Director Samuel Pott - a former soloist with The Martha Graham Dance Company and leading dancer with American Repertory Ballet - Nimbus places special emphasis on presenting work that engages communities across all spectrums. In celebration of its eleventh season, the company presented 'Geolocate' - a collection of work created by four choreographers from across the globe - in response to hateful rhetoric currently heard with alarming frequency in the news. This concept clearly spoke to a wide of array of people; the concert that I attended - closing night, June 4th, 2016 - contained the most diverse audience I have ever encountered. (more...)

9th Annual Choreographers' Canvas Set for 92nd Street Y
by BWW News Desk - Jun 23, 2016

' I walk into a large white room. It's a dance studio in midtown Manhattan. To some people, this empty room symbolizes something profound, mysterious, and terrifying: the task of starting with nothing and working your way toward creating something whole and beautiful and satisfying.' This passionate verse from Twyla Tharp's book 'The Creative Habit' initially spawned the idea for the concept of Manhattan's annual event, The Choreographers Canvas. Now itn its ninth year, The Canvas is a platform for emerging and established choreographers to showcase their work Off-Broadway to industry professionals and the general public. In addition to his duties as choreographer and artistic director he is also an award winning composer - and at one time the most beloved classroom musician in the city - which goes a long way towards explaining his special appreciation for music. All of his concerts are accompanied by accomplished musicians; the fantastic pianist Melody Fader and violinist Door Na performed for this season closing run. (more...)

In preparation for its upcoming Joyce season, RIOULT Dance NY held an open rehearsal at the Gibney Dance Center at 890 Broadway featuring a run through of the company's upcoming world premiere, 'Cassandra's Curse'. Of course this refers to that doomed prophetess from the Trojan War who - though blessed with foresight - was cursed to never have her predictions believed. BWW Review: PAGEANT is Pink Cotton Candy Escapism
by Frank Benge - Jun 13, 2016

PAGEANT, when it originally opened in 1991, was almost ground breaking. The idea of doing a musical parody of a beauty pageant performed by men in drag was fresh… and a little bit crazy in all the good ways. However, twenty five years later, in 2016, the concept creaks in a world where we have RuPaul's Drag Race and traditional beauty pageants have been relegated to cable channels few people watch. BWW Review: JACK FERVER Mistakes The Kitchen for Camp
by Juan Michael Porter II - Jul 5, 2016

Jack Ferver never let up on his drag delivery. Switching arbitrarily from bad French to English or from danse to dance passed for plot in this cabaret act. The scantily clad men in the audience - I attended the June 30th, 2016 performance - lapped it up before they even had a chance to hear the next line. It was all good fun, though if there is an art to telegraphing intention it was not on display here. That was 'I Want You to Want Me': a surrealistic B movie romp ruled by a character with mystical abilities for no other reason than 'just because'. File it under lazy craftsmanship. The world that Mr. Ferver inhabited was self referential, sassy, and imbued with magic, not unlike a gay lounge. (more...)

BWW Review: LA DANCE PROJECT Bombs at The Joyce
by Juan Michael Porter II - Jul 27, 2016

Three men engage in acrobatic entanglements that transform from free-moving sculptural configurations to crumpled masses of bodies that roll all over the floor of a darkly lit fog filled stage. Resembling floor-work exercise as choreographed by Jorma Elo, this indulgent routine - replete with lingering touches and mashing of bodies into each other - revealed little about its performers and even less about itself the longer it went on (more...)

Sergei Danilian to Present ARDANI 25 DANCE GALA at New York City Center

Instead of the usual gala fare -- bits of firecracker variations and pieces of ballet classics -- Sergei Danilian's 'Ardani 25 Dance Gala' at New York City Center, August 19 and 20, is classic Danilian. The intrepid impresario, who has never side-stepped risk, will celebrate Ardani Artists's quarter century of producing in the United States and abroad with a trio of U.S. premieres, two by young, unknown, but up-and-coming Russian choreographers, and one by American Ballet Theatre principal Marcelo Gomes. BWW Review: FINI DANCE FESTIVAL Parties La Via Italiana
by Juan Michael Porter II - Jul 26, 2016

Though it was hot and muggy on the evening of July 24th, 2016, the jam-packed audience at Manhattan Movement & Arts Center was grinning agog like newly minted parents infatuated with their brood. The cause: a troupe of adorable bambine from Staten Island Ballet performing Ellen Tharp's 'Tarantella'. Though only one of these girls was delivering the movement nel modo Italiano, they were all so lively with their tambourine strikes and hops that even the most curmudgeonly of audience members applauded with gusto. MONUMENT at Jacob's Pillow this August
by BWW News Desk - Jul 19, 2016

Following the critically acclaimed "reaccession" of pioneering modernist choreographer Ted Shawn at The Museum of Modern Art, and recent performances at Tate Modern Museum as part of "20 Dancers of the 20th Century", Adam H Weinert returns with MONUMENT, an imaginative and dynamic new dance piece exploring legacy and identity. While others seek to turn museums into theatrical spaces, Weinert transforms the proscenium stage into an archive with stunning scenic design by Paul Tate dePoo III and lighting by JAX Messenger . The program includes historic choreography by Ted Shawn, Doris Humphrey and Jose Limon dating back to the early 20th century as well as creative re-imaginings of these events by Weinert and others - effectively transfiguring the site into a living archive, investigating ideas of mediation, memory and space. by BWW News Desk - Jul 11, 2016

On February 12, 1915, the Abrons Arts Center's Henry Street Settlement Playhouse opened its doors on the Lower East Side. Since that day, it has remained a vital cultural resource, providing audiences with artistically bold work while offering artists opportunities to dynamically grow. He has created an arts venue that is unique to the city's cultural landscape, presenting an international mix of cutting-edge performing and visual artists, both established and emerging, from across the country and around the world, as well as from New York City.
