11th Hour Theatre Company finishes 2016 with a brand-new series. The company is introducing The Spotlight Series, a cabaret series designed to put Philadelphia's favorite musical theatre performers front and center. Each show is one night only. All shows are upstairs at World Cafe Live Philadelphia, 3025 Walnut Street. Tickets cost $40. WHATEVER MOVES BETWEEN US ALSO MOVES THE WORLD IN GENERAL Exhibition Opens Nov. 3

In 1931, Imogen Cunningham was considered to be one of the most important experimental photographers in the United States, and Martha Graham, ten years her junior, was at the forefront of the modern dance movement in New York. The auspicious encounter of these two distinct artists resulted in a significant series of photographs. Ann Daly, an essayist of women's history and culture in the arts, writes of what followed that meeting in Santa Barbara, California, “They worked outside, in front of the barn at Graham's mother's home. The afternoon was hot, the smell unpleasant and the flies bothersome, but together they managed to produce a collection of nearly 90 images, an extraordinary double-portrait of both photographer and choreographer.”  As the sun illuminates a gradation of contours along the dancer's face, limbs and dress, the light suddenly drops out behind her body creating a vast darkness. The UCSB Department of Theater and Dance Presents SANTA BARBARA DANCE THEATER

Artistic Director of Santa Barbara Dance Theater since 2012 (UC Santa Barbara's professional dance company in residence), Pilafian is at this writing preparing for the company's winter season, Anima and Animus, which will roll out over two weekends of performances at UCSB's Hatlen Theater, January 13-22. The program includes works by guest choreographer Becca Lemme, Brandon Whited (UCSB Theater and Dance Assistant Professor- and newly minted dance faculty member), and Artistic Director Pilafian himself. Also, included in the program will be a work by mid-century firebrand choreographer (and dancer for the dispossessed) Jane Dudley, as restaged by longtime Dudley interpreter Nancy Colahan. Leonard Bernstein's CANDIDE has had more lives than that proverbial cat--the latest being New York City Opera's new take on it, opening on January 6 for a ten-performance run at Jazz at Lincoln Center's Rose Theatre. It is, once again, helmed by director Hal Prince and choreographer Pat Birch, who were responsible--with librettist Hugh Wheeler and conductor John Mauceri--for the resuscitation and renovation of the once-considered unproducible work, more than 40 years ago. The Martha Graham Dance Company will present a special GrahamDeconstructed event celebrating the 86th anniversary of Primitive Mysteries, one of Graham's most revolutionary works. This stark, ritualistic dance reflects on the purity found in the virgin myths of the Southwest. It was hailed a masterpiece at its premiere and is a prime example of Graham as a leader in the modernist movement. Primitive Mysteries premiered at the Craig Theatre in New York City on February 2, 1931.  (more...)
