STAGE TUBE: On This Day 10/23- PIPPIN

Today in 1972, Pippin opened at the Imperial Theatre, where it ran for 1944 performances. Pippin is a musical with music and lyrics by Stephen Schwartz and a book by Roger O. Hirson. Bob Fosse, who directed the original Broadway production, also contributed to the libretto. The musical uses the premise of a mysterious acting troupe, led by a Leading Player, to tell the story of Pippin, a young prince on his search for meaning and significance. The original cast included: Eric Berry, Jill Clayburgh, Leland Palmer, Irene Ryan, Ben Vereen, and John Rubinstein. (more...)

BWW Reviews: Actor/Singer Will Collyer Scores at Sterling's Upstairs at the Federal

On Sunday September 29 at Sterling's Upstairs at the Federal, Los Angeles theatre actor/singer Will Collyer presented Will Collyer in Concert directed by Mandy Kaplan and with musical direction by Brett Ryback. The 75-minute set featured guest appearances from Kaplan and Melissa Lyons. Collyer is an exceedingly affable 34 year-old openly gay actor who looks more like 19. Cute, drole and consistently mobile, Collyer did a retrospective of his life so far, which included his birth - very amusing segment on the music his mother was listening to in hospital when she gave birth to him - boyhood background, college days, his first kiss with another boy, local musical theatre, and a tribute to his life partner of 14 years... a mixture of banter and songs that he grew up with, some of which he actually performed in shows. Yesterday at 88 Madison Avenue, the cast of Pippin celebrated the show's new partnership with Carlton Hotel with a live performance, nail art painting provided by Caravan Stylist Studio and circus-inspired refreshments provided by the Carlton hotel. The Carlton hotel's new PIPPIN the Musical Package will be available starting January, running through March 2014. The package includes overnight luxury accommodations, tickets to PIPPIN, cocktails at restaurant Millesime and a CD soundtrack from the show. (more...)

According to Deadline, the duo, coming off of the successful live staging of THE SOUND OF MUSIC on NBC, have signed on to produce the upcoming film adaptation of the hit musical, which scored the 'Best Revival' prize, among others, at this year's Tony Awards. Zadan and Meron also produced the 2002 film adaptation of CHICAGO alongside Harvey Weinstein, as well as HAIRSPRAY in 2007. (more...)

PIPPIN Recoups Broadway Investment of $8.5 Million

The producers of the Tony Award winning PIPPIN have announced that the show has officially recouped its $8.5 million capitalization costs as of the Sunday, December 1, 2013 performance. The show also broke the Music Box Theatre house record last week for the highest grossing single performance on the evening of Friday, November 29th with $151,219. The record was then broken again on the evening of Saturday, November 30th with $151,977 gross sales. Roger O. Bethesda, Maryland's Imagination Stage Names its Building after Benefactors Who Retired its Debt

Imagination Stage, in Bethesda, Maryland, renamed its building in honor of Jim and Carol Trawick, the benefactors who donated the largest single amount in the history of the organization, Carol Trawick and her late husband, Jim.
