Columbia Stages Announces 2008-09 Season

COLUMBIA STAGES, the award-winning producing arm of Columbia University's Graduate Theatre Program, announces its 2008-2009 season. The highly political season will include Baal and The Threepenny Opera by Bertolt Brecht; Euripides' Medea; Big Love by Charles L. Mee; The Woman by Edward Bond; a co-production with Origin Theatre Company; a new adaptation of Geoffrey Chaucer's The Canterbury Tales and the 5th annual New Voices New Play Festival. Quintessence to Present HAMLET & SHE STOOPS TO CONQUER in Rep, Begin. 10/9

Quintessence Theatre Group launches its fourth season of progressive classic theatre with Shakespeare's HAMLET presented in rotating repertory with Goldmsmith's SHE STOOPS TO CONQUER, directed by Alexander Burns. Quintessence's celebrated full throttle actor and text driven approach to the classics will be further enhanced by an Elizabethan Courtyard style staging, complete with groundlings, and a fast and furious two hour abridgement of HAMLET. HAMLET will begin previews on Wednesday, October 9 at 7pm and open on Saturday, October 12 at 8pm. SHE STOOPS TO CONQUER will begin previews on Thursday, October 17 at 7pm and open on Saturday, October 26 at 8pm. Sundance Institute today announced the seven artists selected for its 2013 Playwrights Retreat at Ucross Foundation, February 4-22, 2013. The annual writing colony at the 20,000-acre working cattle ranch outside of Sheridan, Wyo. provides a supportive environment for artists to create new work and receive guidance and reactions to it at an early stage. Under the supervision of Philip Himberg, Artistic Director of the Theatre Program, and Producing Director Christopher Hibma, the Playwrights Retreat is made possible through the generosity of Ucross Foundation. Lyric Opera of Chicago Announces 2015-16 World Premiere of BEL CANTO

Anthony Freud, general director of Lyric Opera of Chicago, today announced details of its new world premiere. Bel Canto, by the gifted young Peruvian composer Jimmy Lopez, with a libretto by Pulitzer Prize-winning playwright Nilo Cruz, is based on the best-selling novel by Ann Patchett. To premiere in Lyric's 2015-16 season, the new opera, commissioned as part of Lyric's Renee Fleming Initiative, will be conducted by Lyric music director Sir Andrew Davis and directed by Stephen Wadsworth.
