BWW Recap: THE BASTARD EXECUTIONER Ties Up Loose Ends on Tonight's Season FinaleBWW Recap: THE BASTARD EXECUTIONER Ties Up Loose Ends on Tonight's Season Finale
by Kara McCoy - Nov 17, 2015

Alright, folks. It's season finale time, so let's just cut to the chase. Finales are all about tying up Loose Ends, and tonight's episode of THE BASTARD EXECUTIONER was no exception. First there's that little issue of vengeance that's been hanging over Wilk and Toran's heads since pretty much the pilot. Would tonight finally be the night to avenge their butchered wives? Well...Actually...No. And turns out, I am so okay with that, because all season long, I couldn't help but look at Leon and Locke and think, y'know what, they kinda seem...not...that...bad...? In the first of many showdowns tonight, Toran confronts Locke about his wife's slaughter. Locke admits that he acted under orders, but totally owns what he did. He takes responsibility, but he seems sorry for it--even if he doesn't come out and say it. He doesn't beg for mercy because he knows he doesn't deserve it. Toran, in turn, says that Locke has at least earned himself a fair fight. Which was really nice of him, but I don't think he actually expected to lose. Lucky for him, Locke is a pretty honorable guy and chooses to spare Toran's life, on the agreement that their score is now settled. So. There's Toran's vengeance. Check. (more...)

by Jack L. B. Gohn - May 31, 2015

There is a kind of magic which will exorcise the problems of Blithe Spirit, and let us not notice them: This production cruises and coasts on the farcical elements and the bickering and the eccentricities of Mme. Arcati the medium, and in so doing it certainly keeps the audience laughing. But it does not dispel the sour taste lingering at the end. (more...)

by Gil Kaan - Jun 8, 2015

Harvey Fierstein's one-act On Tidy Endings, originally part of his 1987 Safe Sex trilogy, holds up very well in the abled reins of director Sara Wagner and her kick-ass cast. Set in a time when gay men only came out of their closets on a need-to-know basis (ex-wives, kids), contracting AIDS equalled a death sentence. Still, the after-effects of a gay man dying have similar revelancy in 2015. (more...)

BWW Review: The Repertory Theatre of St. Louis' Outstanding New Musical GEORAMABWW Review: The Repertory Theatre of St. Louis' Outstanding New Musical GEORAMA
by Chris Gibson - Jan 25, 2016

Thanks to the developmental work that occurred during The Repertory Theatre of St. Louis' Ignite! Play Festival in 2014 we now have the opportunity to witness the fruit of their labors; the world premier of a very entertaining new musical called GEORAMA. This play tells a fascinating story that is truly a forgotten piece of history that deserves to be celebrated. This production is staged in the Studio Theatre of the Loretto-Hilton, and that adds additional atmosphere and intimacy that makes the story connect in a uniquely vibrant manner. As an avid film fan, I'd read a bit about the history of 'motion pictures', and found countless early examples of flip books, and the like, but nothing prepared me for the sadly neglected tale of John Banvard, who created a virtual recreation of the wonders of the Mississippi River on a scrolling canvas that stretched for miles. That's quite a feat, and so is this staging. I cannot recommend it highly enough! It's truly a show that deserves an audience both young and old to appreciate, or become aware of, something that was truly as magical as the spectacle this artist created. (more...)

BWW Review: NICE WORK IF YOU CAN GET ITBWW Review: NICE WORK IF YOU CAN GET IT
by Tim Carney - Aug 17, 2015

The Production Company produced one of its finest shows in recent memory with George and Ira Gershwin's Nice Work If You Can Get It. As the production notes state 'This bubbling 1920s-era musical sparkles with extravagant dance numbers, glittering costumes and a delicious love story between a wealthy playboy and the feisty bootlegger who melts his heart.' And sparkle it does. The production team excel with the material. Roger Hodgman's direction is slick and his use of space is particularly clever and inventive, filling every morsel of it with his talented cast. Also maximizing the abilities of her cast is chorographer Dana Jolly. Her choreography is sympathetic to the era but with a contemporary edge and is truly a feature of the production. Orchestra Victoria, under the precise baton of musical director John Foreman, bring the Gershwin classics to life with fervor and grace. Also absolutely nailing the period and style is Isaac Lummis' costume design which is a visual smorgasbord and completely highlights the period. (more...)

THE MAN CALLED MONKHOUSE to Tour Following Sold Out Run in EdinburghTHE MAN CALLED MONKHOUSE to Tour Following Sold Out Run in Edinburgh
by BWW News Desk - Aug 17, 2015

In July 1995, alone in his cramped study, among thousands of showbusiness artefacts, film stock and memories the comic legend Bob Monkhouse realises his treasured joke books have been stolen. This is something of a disaster in the world of the obsessive performer and joke-smith.  As the reality of the situation sinks in, he is forced into an uneasy introspection. The Man Called Monkhouse traces his life through a difficult childhood, via the vertiginous heights of television superstardom, the dent in his status during the 'new wave' comedy of the late '80s and finishes with a re-born Bob, back on TV and finally feted as the comic genius he undoubtedly was.   (more...)
