BWW Review: LITTLE WOMEN Charming Family Friendly Musical
by Frank Benge - Nov 7, 2016

Little Women is a musical with a book by Allan Knee, lyrics by Mindi Dickstein, and music by Jason Howland. Workshop productions were presented at Duke University in 2001 and 2004 and the Broadway production opened at the Virginia Theatre on January 23, 2005. Based on the classic 1869 Louisa May Alcott semi-autobiographical novel, Little Women focuses on the four March sisters: aspiring writer Jo (Lilly Lane Stafford), romantic Meg (Caroline Kinnamore), the easily hurt Amy (Maddie Dennison), and kind Beth (Emily McIntyre) as well as their beloved Marmee (Maddrey Blackwood.) The women are at the family home in Concord, Massachusetts while their father is away during the Civil War. The musical begins with Jo trying to sell her stories in New York but soon brings Jo back home. While the events and timing of things aren't exactly the same as in the novel; Allan Knee's script, for the most part, is expertly condensed Alcott retaining the spirit of the characters. Jason Howland's music is pleasant, if rather unmemorable, riffing musical theatre numbers out of period waltzes, polkas, and quadrilles; supported by Mindi Dickstein's rather unmemorable lyrics. The end result feels like a lesser known Rogers & Hammerstein musical. It's just good old fashioned squeaky clean family fun. (more...)

New eBook on Novelist Elena Ferrante is Released
by BWW News Desk - Nov 21, 2016

'Naples Little Women,' first critical study of the Italian novelist Elena Ferrante, published by Penington Press. Elena Ferrante's fiction covers the psychic landscape of women who come of age in post-World War II Italy, who struggle to escape poverty and juggle the demands of career and family. Her narrator's voice is at once ferocious, intimate, and uncensored. Most remarkable for our media-obsessed age is that the author's identity is a mystery as compelling as one of her plots. This critical study of her seven novels by Professor Mullenneaux integrates Ferrante's own thoughts on her books from La frantumaglia (2003) with their critical reception since 1992. Chapters are dedicated to each novel and to the author's signature themes - mothers and daughters, female friendship, and Naples as a 'city in spite of itself' - to illuminate and extend Ferrante's unique contribution to world literature. This volume is an essential resource for anyone who wants to deepen their knowledge of one of Italy's best-loved contemporary writers. ISBN: 978-0-9704296-4-3. $24.99. Available from Amazon.com Contact: Penington Press, New York, NY, 212-749-2995 (more...)

Kritzerland at Sterling's Upstairs at The Federal to Present SUPER KIDS THURSDAY
by BWW News Desk - Jan 14, 2017

It's the 74th Kritzerland show and the annual all young performers show - one of the yearly favorites to do. Those who've been to the shows know that one of the things that makes them unique (until everyone else started doing it) is the use of young performers in shows. Kritzerland likes to nurture and be supportive of tomorrow's future musical theater performers, in fact, they feel it is their duty to do so. So, this is the performers' night to shine. But if you think you're going to hear a bunch of kid songs, you won't be. The night is a challenge to the young folks and there will be no pandering to their age - they are given wonderful musical theatre material from the classics to the new, featuring songs from shows they may one day get to do - so, you'll be hearing amazing songs from such classics as Funny Girl, The Music Man, Bells Are Ringing, A Little Night Music, On a Clear Day You Can See Forever, as well as less well known musicals like Minnie's Boys, Andrew Lloyd Webber's Song and Dance, Baby, right up to the Broadway smash, Waitress. Being a Kritzerland show, there will also be a few surprises. So join this incredible cast of young folks and catch these young people before they're on Broadway. Kritzerland is produced and hosted by Bruce Kimmel and co-produced by Doug Haverty.  (more...)

This morning, Foster sat down with CBS' Mo Rocca to chat about her journey as a Broadway actress, and her current starring roles in TV Land's Younger and The New Group's Sweet Charity. When speaking about the latter, in reference to recovering from her divorce several years ago, Foster said, “What's interesting is that I know [Charity], because I think I have been her, but luckily, I don't feel like I'm her now.”  (more...)
