The Houston Grand Opera Presents EL PASADO NUNCA SE TERMINA, 5/13-17

Houston Grand Opera (HGO) will present El Pasado Nunca Se Termina/The Past Is Never Finished, an opera featuring the internationally renowned ensemble Mariachi Vargas de Tecalitla?n, on May 13, 16, and 17, 2015 in the Wortham Theater Center, it was announced by HGO Artistic and Music Director Patrick Summers and Managing Director Perryn Leech. HGO's 2010 mounting of the world's first mariachi opera, Cruzar la Cara de la Luna/To Cross the Face of the Moon, with Mariachi Vargas, not only captivated audiences in Houston, but went on to hit runs in Paris, San Diego, Chicago, and Tucson and Phoenix, Arizona. HGO brought Cruzar back to Houston in 2013 for three sold-out performances. Now the company will present a second mariachi opera from the same creative team of Jose? “Pepe” Marti?nez and Leonard Foglia, fresh from its March 2015 world premiere at Lyric Opera of Chicago. Set on a Mexican hacienda in 1910, just prior to the Mexican Revolution, the story traces how the country's cultural conflicts and nationalistic struggles shape one family across generations. El Pasado Nunca Se Termina/The Past Is Never Finished will be sung in Spanish and English with projected translations. (more...)

American Theater Company (ATC) proudly announces Season 32, led by its newly appointed Artistic Director Will Davis and continuing the theater's dedication to developing new works. The 2016-17 season kicks off this September with the world premiere of Dan Aibel's T., an exploration of the competitive ice skating saga between Nancy Kerrigan and Tonya Harding, directed byMargot Bordelon, Sept. 23-Oct. 30, 2016. In the New Year, ATC presents Jaclyn Backhaus' Men On Boats, making its regional premiere at ATC Jan. 6-Feb. 12, 2017, under Will Davis' direction after he remounts his acclaimed New York production Off Broadway at Playwrights Horizons this summer. Next spring brings another world premiere at ATC, Basil Kreimendahl's We're Gonna Be Okay, March 17-April 23, 2017. Second Stage Theatre's 37th Anniversary Gala celebration will honor Producer DAVID STONE, celebrating his ongoing 12 year relationship with the Off-Broadway Company.  The evening's Honorary Chair is James M. Nederlander and the Co-Chairs are Marc Platt, Patrick Catullo, and Nancy Coyne.  The gala evening, which will be directed by James Lapine, will be held on Monday, May 2, 2016 at Cipriani 42nd Street.  The evening's entertainment, which will feature stars who have appeared in Stone's productions over the years, will be announced at a later date.  This is the first time Second Stage's annual gala will be honoring a Broadway producer.  Berkeley Repertory Theatre today announces that it will present a three-city Northern California tour of Anna Deavere Smith's Notes from the Field: Doing Time in Education, The California Chapter, a one-woman show about the school-to-prison pipeline. Following a critically acclaimed three-week run at Berkeley Rep's Roda Theatre, Smith will return to communities she visited during her research for the Pipeline Project to present excerpts of monologues from Notes from the Field. She will share her learnings and encourage dialogue and action to address the school-to-prison pipeline. The tour will also serve as an opportunity to spur youth within those communities to take action around racial inequities in the school system. (more...)

On May 2nd, Flanders & Streb are convening Risky Talking #2: What Is A Risky Truth? Acclaimed novelist A.M. Homes and actress/dramatist Anna Deavere Smith will join action architect Elizabeth Streb and author/journalist Laura Flanders for more. Hear what they think, say what you think and watch out for the unique action moment created by the Streb team. The action and the conversation resume on Friday May 2nd from 7 to 9 pm.
