Liminis Theater Presents World Premiere of GIVE THE MAP by Robert Hawkes
by BWW News Desk - Nov 8, 2016

The first scene of King Lear goes badly for the old man, as we know. But what the heck was he expecting, anyway? This one-act prologue to Shakespeare's version of the tale seeks to answer that very question, as the King and his Fool try desperately to control events that have not even happened yet. An old man tries to retire from public life with what he considers to be the dignity befitting his station, and sets himself up to fail. Along the way, we encounter memory, grief, denial, the power of language, clowning, fooling, and the invisibility of numbers. (more...)

BWW Review: KING LEAR, Old Vic, 7 November 2016
by Jenny Gilbert - Nov 8, 2016

Gender-blind casting has arrived and we'd better get used to it. Correction: it seems we are getting used to it, viz the imminent revival of the Donmar's all-female Shakespeare trilogy. So the headline story of this Old Vic production is not that a woman is taking on the Everest north-face of a role formerly reserved for mature alpha males of the acting profession. The headline story of Glenda Jackson's Lear is that this Lear is magnificent, and its magnificence emanates directly from the text. (more...)

BWW Review: THE SHAKESPEARE REVUE, Richmond Theatre, 7 November 2016
by Aliya Al-Hassan - Nov 8, 2016

A revue is a rare theatrical treat these days. In its heyday, the irresistible combination of light comedy, song and dance sketches was incredibly popular. Its golden age lasted from the early 1920s to the late 1950s and for much of that time its greatest practitioner was Noel Coward who wrote and appeared in a succession of revues on both sides of the Atlantic such as London Calling! (1923) and Sigh No More (1945). (more...)

BWW Review: KING LEAR at University Of Louisville - Budding Among The Ruins

One a certain boy who will never grow up, the other one of Shakespeare's kings who has grown quite old. Yet they both seem to suffer a clear case of "Peter Pan Syndrome"; flying about from place to place, and oblivious to the destruction they leave in their wake. Following up our successful run of The Terrible Tragedy of Peter Pan, What Dreams May Co is pleased to present William Shakespeare's King Lear. (more...)
