The legendary rock opera by lyricist Tim Rice (Evita, The Lion King) and composer Andrew Lloyd Webber (Evita, The Phantom of the Opera), the premiere of Jesus Christ Superstar redefined the Broadway musical and 40 years later it remains a beloved classic. The instantly recognizable tunes and daringly contemporary lyrics made it one of the most popular albums of all-time, selling over seven million copies, as well as creating a truly global smash hit, with sold-out productions in more than 40 countries.

BWW Review: FINDING NEVERLAND at the Hippodrome - It's a Memorable Musical That Is Both Thrilling and Magical!
by Charles Shubow - Jun 30, 2017

I always find it exciting to see a musical I know nothing about and FINDING NEVERLAND fits that bill. I remember watching Jennifer Hudson sing 'Neverland' on the 2014 Tony Awards and recall watching the cast perform on the NBC 'Thanksgiving Day Parade' in November, 2014. The cast included Matthew Morrison, Kelsey Grammer, Laura Michelle Kelly and Carolee Carmello. However, the Tony Awards snubbed the musical with no nominations. After seeing the show this week, I do not understand why. I found the musical absolutely wonderful and worthy of a Tony nomination for Best Musical. FUN HOME won the Tony for Best Musical in 2015 beating out SOMETHING ROTTEN!, THE VISIT, and AN AMERICAN IN PARIS. There were no nominations for FINDING NEVERLAND. (more...)

BWW Review: THE HUNCHBACK OF NOTRE DAME at Aurora Theatre And Theatrical Outfit
by Amy Zipperer - Jul 21, 2017

When Aurora Theatre announced that its 22nd season would open with a production of The Hunchback of Notre Dame, a production offered in partnership with Theatrical Outfit, screams of giddy delight could be heard in the Broadway-themed living rooms of theatre nerds all across Atlanta. The 2014 tuner, showcasing the only collaboration between musical theatre legends Alan Menken and Stephen Schwartz, seemed destined for Broadway, but, despite the mostly favorable reviews coming out of its premiere at the La Jolla Playhouse and its subsequent transfer to the Papermill Playhouse, a prime destination for shows on the Broadway fast-track, the production just never made it to the Great White Way. Given that disappointing history, it's safe to say that theatergoers' appetities have been whetted for regional premieres of this highly-anticipated musical, and this powerful production, with Justin Anderson at the helm, definitely satisfies those cravings. BWW Interview: For the Creators of The Theatre Lab School of the Dramatic Arts' World Premiere Musical, THE KIDS' TABLE isn't Such a Bad Place to Be.
by Elliot Lanes - Jul 17, 2017

When arts in education institutions produce musicals, they tend to stick with titles that everyone is likely to recognize. For the past 25 years DC's very own Theatre Lab School of the Dramatic Arts has produced musicals that fall into this category ¬Ė for example, Pippin and Jesus Christ Superstar with their Musical Theatre Institute for Teens, as well as other lesser known shows like Side Show ¬Ė but what other teen program has embarked on the journey of premiering a new show? None that I know of, which is why I keep on singing The Theatre Lab's praises. (more...)

BWW Review: Dynamic Kay Cole Soars with SOUVENIR

In the movie he says 'I've got a reputation to protect,' and I think that goes a long way to explaining his behavior.' Neil Starkenberg is commenting on his role debut in Maine State Music Theatre's upcoming production of Grease, which begins a run at the Pickard Theater on July 19.
