ANNA NICOLE Makes U.S. Premiere in NYC; World Premiere Available on DVD
by BWW News Desk - Sep 9, 2013

Anna Nicole, the Mark-Anthony Turnage opera surrounding the life events of model and socialite Anna Nicole Smith, comes to New York for its US premiere. Launching the 2013 Next Wave Festival, this co-production between BAM and New York City Opera features Sarah Joy Miller as Anna Nicole, the attention-seeking socialite who married oil mogul J. Howard Marshall II (a man more than 60 years her senior), squirmed her way into celebrity circles, and died as the result of an overdose on prescription drugs. Anna Nicole brings the audience through the annals of the life of a woman many saw as selfish and carefree. However, Anna Nicole is approached from different angles: the incredible tale of a young bombshell who won it all and lived a life of luxury, and the tragedy that took her away when life got too big for her. Time Running Out for NYC Opera to Raise Funds
by BWW News Desk - Sep 27, 2013

BWW Reviews: ANNA NICOLE's 36DDs Gain AAA Status with New York City Opera at BAM's Next Wave Festival
by Richard Sasanow - Sep 19, 2013

With a story that is somehow poignant despite its scatological language, ANNA NICOLE's heroine is nicer than Berg's LULU, less lucky than TRAVIATA's Violetta and more cunning than MANON's Manon (though maybe not MANON LESCAUT's). Whatever she is, Anna Nicole Smith is definitely a full-fledged operatic heroine. As portrayed by American soprano Sarah Joy Miller in the local premiere of the Marc-Anthony Turnage-Richard Thomas work about the life and times of minor celebrity Smith, this is a wildly entertaining evening. The opera, which debuted two years ago in London, opened on September 17 at Brooklyn Academy of Music, compliments of New York City Opera and BAM's Next Wave Festival, directed by Richard Jones. BWW Reviews: Yellow Sound Label's KERRIGAN-LOWDERMILK LIVE is an Exceedingly Fun and Charming Album
by David Clarke - May 23, 2013

Magical things really can happen when Broadway talents converge, as is proven on Kait Kerrigan and Brian Lowdermilk's sophomore album KERRIGAN-LOWDERMILK LIVE. The album exists because the duo raised an impressive and record-breaking $35,000 in their debut album's Kickstarter campaign. With the extra $25,000 they funded a concert tour, 2011's 'You Made This Tour,' and a live album, KERRIGAN-LOWDERMILK LIVE. As a singer-songwriter duo that also writes for theatre, there is a prominent and fascinating indie vibe that inhabits every track. As Kait Kerrigan states on one of the tracks, there is simply no denying that this album fabulously showcases talents are the 'future of theater and music in general.' (more...)

BWW Reviews: KISS OF THE SPIDER WOMAN Burrows Under the Skin in BoHo's New Staging
by Paul W. Thompson - Jun 3, 2013

I hardly know where to begin with this review of the Bohemian Theatre Ensemble's gutsy, stripped-down and yet somehow epic production of “Kiss of the Spider Woman,” the musical by John Kander, Fred Ebb and Terrence McNally that is running at Theatre Wit through June 30, 2013. There, I guess I just began. I'm a jumble of thoughts and feeling right now. Come to think of it, so are the three principal characters. (more...)

BWW Reviews: Balagan Takes JERRY SPRINGER: THE OPERA to Hell and Back Again
by Jay Irwin - Jan 11, 2014

Opera has long been considered at the epitome of class and sophistication. Well it's time to give up that idea as 'Jerry Springer: The Opera' has come to town from Balagan Theatre in association with Seattle Theatre Group, and they've taken the highbrow nature of Opera and defecated all over it. And guess what, it's awesome! And before you think this is just some crass parody with a lot of bathroom humor and sex jokes, well it is, but it's also a smart and meaningful show with soaring operatic performers who would (some of whom have) fit right in at Seattle Opera. Excitement Plus at LA's Next Great Stage Star Finale
by Don Grigware - Feb 13, 2012

On Sunday February 12 LA's Next Great Stage Star brought its annual six-week singing competition to a rivetingly pulsating conclusion @ Sterling's Upstairs @ Vitello's. Twenty contestants who began on Sunday January 8 performed, and 14 judges then narrowed the group to five finalists. Not an easy task, as this year's contestants were all immensely talented vocalists who gave their all to every single performance! Once the five finalists were announced, each performed one more time in order for the judges to pick a winner. Lovely Chelsea Emma Franko from Apple Valley took the top prize. In second place is Carrie St. Louis. Tyson Pyles and David Michael Laffey tied for third place, and in fourth, sweet, petite Justine Huxley. Audience had assigned points to the contestants for the first five weeks and the judges weighted these results as part of the final voting. (more...)

BWW Reviews: Chance Theater Stages Racy JERRY SPRINGER: THE OPERA
by Michael L. Quintos - Aug 5, 2011

Long before the stage saw puppets having sex and Ugandans confronting Mormons, there was Jerry Springer: The Opera, a joyously foul-mouthed stage musical that's as much of a hilarious guilty pleasure as its title suggests. The Chance Theater in Anaheim Hills is the latest American regional theater to take on this racy, over-the-top show. Due to popular demand--and, frankly, rightly so--this surreal musical's run has been extended through August 14. At the height of its popularity, Jerry Springer's eponymous TV program which inspired this reverent parody cornered the market in shocking reveals, loud on-stage brawls, and outrageous fringe parades. So the idea that this low-brow talk show-slash-circus sideshow has somehow been immortalized into a musical theater piece--specifically an Opera, perhaps the most high-brow of the Arts--attracts nothing less than amusing curiosity. (more...)
