BWW Review: WET's Creepy and Sometimes Confusing THE THINGS ARE AGAINST USBWW Review: WET's Creepy and Sometimes Confusing THE THINGS ARE AGAINST US
by Jay Irwin - May 2, 2016

Most often when you go see a play there is a very plain narrative, a beginning, a middle and an end to convey your story. Some plays out there, however, make you work a little harder either with non-linear structure or an existential bent. And then there are some plays that go so far that you walk out of them thinking "What the hell did I just see?" Well Washington Ensemble Theatre's creepy and surreal "The Things Are Against Us", currently playing at 12th Avenue Arts, is firmly footed in that second camp but often dipped its toe into the third which resulted in a show that was creepy and fun but left my theater companion and me with a car ride home filled with statements like, "Well, I think this is what happened." BWW Review: Commedia dell'Arte Meets Political Farce at Portland StageBWW Review: Commedia dell'Arte Meets Political Farce at Portland Stage
by Carla Maria Verdino-Sllwold - May 2, 2016

Portland Stage closes its season with Dario Fo's 1974 play, They Don't Pay? We Won't Pay!, in the playwright's signature style of provocative socialist politics and broad Commedia dell'Arte farce. Translated from the Italian by Jon Laskin and Michael Aquilante, the Portland production adds an Americanized layer of iconic comedy characters and references to shows such as the Honeymooners. The overall effect alternates between moments of hilarity and wearisome intervals, though one can only admire the virtuoso performances of the entire cast and director Ron Botting's crisp, energetic production. BWW Review: MOTOWN: THE MUSICAL Is a Treat For The Eyes and EarsBWW Review: MOTOWN: THE MUSICAL Is a Treat For The Eyes and Ears
by Frank Benge - Apr 27, 2016

MOTOWN: THE MUSICAL is a jukebox musical that premiered on Broadway in April 2013, receiving four Tony Award nominations. Based on Berry Gordy's 1994 autobiography To Be Loved: The Music, the Magic, the Memories of Motown, it tells the story of how he founded and ran the Motown record label. It also touches on his relationships with Diana Ross (Allison Semmes), Marvin Gaye (Jarran Muse), and Smokey Robinson (Jesse Nager). Digging deep into the Motown catalog, the show contains over 60 songs. With that many songs one would expect a pretty thin book; however, by wisely placing most of the focus on Gordy (Chester Gregory) and Ross' relationship and the rise and fall of Motown, we are given a compelling portrait of both Gordy and the music industry. MOTOWN: THE MUSICAL is a celebration of the Motown sound… that sound that joined black and white America in ways nothing else has equaled before or since...that magical period in our past when we were invited to go dancing in the street to a brand new beat.
