BWW Review: DIRTY DANCING Turns up the Heat on Tour -- but Not the Singing
by Perry Tannenbaum - Sep 27, 2016

Last year, when I passed up my first opportunity to see DIRTY DANCING at Belk Theater, I had this naive idea that it would be a musical adaptation of the 1987 film starring Patrick Swayze and Jennifer Grey. With the return of the national tour Charlotte, this time at cavernous Ovens Auditorium, I persisted in my folly long after the curtain rose. Silly me, I overlooked the fine print in my playbill under the florid romance novel italics of the DIRTY DANCING logo: 'the classic story on stage.' (more...)

BWW Feature: New Theatre Jacksonville Technical Director Designs Austen
by Michael Lipp - Sep 26, 2016

Jon Jory's adaptation of Jane Austen's PRIDE & PREJUDICE posed significant scenic and lighting design challenges for Theatre Jacksonville's new Technical Director, Tim Watson. 'You've got about 25 locations and you can literally change from one to another on a single line,' Watson explains. 'There's no way you can do full sets for each location, but it's written that way - to be minimal. It's difficult to jump between so many locations and be so fast and so fluid. Jon Jory didn't want black-out scene changes, so it's more of an environment rather than actual locations.' Director Amy Canning agrees and calls the show 'very minimalist, but seriously complex with lots of moving parts and pieces.' (more...)

by Brodie Paparella - Sep 26, 2016

Pushing the boundaries of the performance art from is no easy task, and neither is adapting the quick-fire connective nature of the brain for the stage, and yet in House of Sands' Castles, Eliza Sanders accomplishes both, and more. In a work all at once intimate, quintessentially Australian, randomised and unbelievably funny, reviewing Castles is not a matter of attributing meaning, but asserting the importance of this inclusion in our arts landscape. The Guthrie's well cast, wittily directed, beautifully costumed production of a new adaptation of one of Jane Austen's beloved novels is a delightful concoction, firmly set in period but updated to our time in terms of thematic emphasis. This upbeat show is well worth a visit, even if you are someone who finds the marriage plot kind of a yawner, usually. (more...)

BWW Review: Wicked Good WICKED at PPAC
by Andria Tieman - Sep 23, 2016

The musical WICKED is officially 12 years old, but it isn't showing its age in the slightest.  If anything, in the current political climate, the far away Land of OZ feels more real than ever, and the political issues that drive Elphaba to become The Wicked Witch, draw a spooky parallel with current news stories.  That's not to say that this show is all doom and gloom, but rather just an incredibly smart prequel to the much-loved Wizard of Oz with some of the catchiest and most powerful songs ever.  Marry an excellent story with a phenomenally talented cast, fantastic sets and a powerful orchestra and you have a production that continues to amaze even through multiple viewings.  The national tour of Wicked has resulted in nearly 17 million people watching this show, and it's a pretty safe bet that most of those people would like to see it again.
