BWW Reviews: Rare Revival of I OUGHT TO BE IN PICTURES at the FalconBWW Reviews: Rare Revival of I OUGHT TO BE IN PICTURES at the Falcon
by Don Grigware - Oct 23, 2012

Upon its premiere at the Mark Taper Forum in 1979, I Ought to Be in Pictures was clearly Neil Simon in a new light. There were less laugh-out-loud one-liners and more meaningful dialogue dealing with tattered relationships in a realistic, true-to-life manner. Mind you, he had not yet reached the level of sophistication of the Brighton Beach trilogy and Lost in Yonkers, but it was definitely a step in that direction, employing autobiographical as opposed to fictional elements as plot. Herb Tucker is... Neil Simon. In a rarely produced revival, I Ought to Be in Pictures resurfaces at the Falcon Theatre with skilled direction and a genuinely wonderful cast through November 11. I OUGHT TO BE IN PICTURES with Richard Karn to Open 2/12 at Alhambra
by BWW News Desk - Jan 28, 2014

In 1984 Tod Booth was hired to direct at the then-named Alhambra Dinner Theatre. The show? I Ought to Be in Pictures starring Claude Akins. Five weeks later, on a return trip to watch a show, while sitting at table B15 with owner Leon Simon, Tod made an offer to buy the Alhambra. The deal was done on a napkin. In two years he took the gross revenue from $700,000 to $2,500,000 and was named 'Entrepreneur of the Year' by the Jacksonville Business Journal. The rest, as Tod says, 'is history.' While not necessarily billed as an anniversary, it's hard to miss the parallels between the 1984 production and the 2014 production: Tod is still directing and the Alhambra is still bringing in big-name guest stars, this time Richard Karn from television's Home Improvement. I Ought to Be in Pictures opens February 12, 2014 at the nation's longest running professional dinner theater. (more...)

Don Grigware Announces His Best in LA Theatre for 2012Don Grigware Announces His Best in LA Theatre for 2012
by Don Grigware - Dec 24, 2012

The choices I have made are based solely on the plays and performances that I actually saw. I cannot see all the great talent that is out there in LA; it is physically impossible, as there exist far too many theatre/cabaret performances for one person to cover. So if a choice of yours is not on my list, chances are, I did not see that play or performance...or, it just did not make the final cut. I also do not separate Equity from Equity waiver; I consider all the productions/performances I select to be of top-of-the-line quality/professionalism. (more...)
