Applications Available for Pam Farr Summer Shakespeare Studio 2/4

As part of The Old Globe's ongoing commitment to programs that serve all of San Diego County, the theatre announced today that on Saturday, February 4, applications will become available online for the Globe's 2017 Summer Shakespeare Studio for high school students-now named the Pam Farr Summer Shakespeare Studio. The applications, which will be accepted through April 1, will be accessible on February 4 at www.TheOldGlobe.org/studio-application. The four-week program is a unique opportunity for rising 9th - 12th graders and recent graduates not only to develop foundational skills for reading, interpreting, and performing Shakespeare's plays, but also to cultivate their own artistic voice through storytelling and creating original material inspired by deep, personal connections to Shakespeare. This new play based on the real-life story of Elva Miller, a middle-aged housewife who gained notoriety as an unlikely pop phenomenon in the 1960s for her warbling renditions of chart topping hits 'Downtown,' 'Monday, Monday,' 'A Hard Day's Night,' and more runs February 28 - March 26 in Signature Theatre's MAX Theatre. Children's Theatre Company (CTC) announces the world premiere production of Dr. Seuss' The Sneetches The Musical which opened on February 7, 2017. Directed by Peter C. Brosius, the production is written by Philip Dawkins, whose many works have been produced from Canada to Washington DC to Los Angeles, and upcoming at the MCC Theatre (Off-Broadway), with music by David Mallamud, whose works have been heard at Carnegie Hall, The Kennedy Center and Off-Broadway. This new production is the third Dr. Seuss work that CTC has commissioned in a historical partnership that dates back to the first production in 1979 of Dr. Seuss's The 500 Hats of Bartholomew Cubbins. It is also the first Dr. Seuss commission since 1994 when Dr. Seuss's How the Grinch Stole Christmas premiered at CTC before it became the Old Globe Theatre's annual holiday show and its Broadway transfer. CTC retains the exclusive rights to produce and perform both works in Minnesota. (more...)

'Zucchini' may sound like a weird name, but after the accidental death of his mother, the nickname is all the nine-year-old has left of her. The kids at his new group home seem to understand and, though hesitant at first, Zucchini soon finds himself part of their close-knit, makeshift family. So upon the arrival of the winsome Camille, he is quick to offer his own warm welcome. But when Camille's greedy aunt tries to take her away, Zucchini and his newfound friends must find a way to stay together. With its beautifully expressive stop-motion style, the Academy Award nominated My Life as a Zucchini tackles sometimes heavy subject matter with a light touch, conveying the children's perseverance through precarious circumstances through the matter-of-fact lens of childhood. In English (more...)

WHO'S HOLIDAY! Playwright Sues Dr. Seuss Enterprises for Cancelation of Play

Earlier this year, an off-Broadway production of WHO'S HOLIDAY!, a new play by Matthew Lombardo, was canceled by the Shubert Organization they received complaints from Dr. Seuss Enterprises. Now according to the New York Times, the playwright is suing the owner of copyrights for Seuss' works, arguing that the 'highly transformative' material does not in fact infringe on How the Grinch Stole Christmas.
