This detailed narrative will give readers an example of the result of one prayer-the Prayer of St. Francis of Assisi-and the effect it had on one man in a deplorable and dangerous situation. SOUND OFF Special Edition: Top 10+ Most Important Gay MusicalsSOUND OFF Special Edition: Top 10+ Most Important Gay Musicals
by Pat Cerasaro - Jul 1, 2015

The landmark Supreme Court ruling handed down late last week instating national legalization of marriage rights for all individuals is a cause celebre for the country at large, particularly the Broadway community who has vocally and vociferously fought for equal acceptance for all for decades. Given the preponderance of LGBT people in the theatre community itself, this victory is a particular joy for many to celebrate. As a result of this momentous event, now is the ideal time to take a look back at the most important and notable musicals that have appeared on Broadway in the last several decades to shine a light on the gay community, ranging from portrayals of closeted individuals trapped and unable to find acceptance in a conservative society all the way to the out and proud representations available to see in some currently running smash hits. Additionally, who could forget all of musicals that have touched upon LGBT issues over the years - from the campy to the controversial to the highly acclaimed. (more...)

Pacific Symphony Summer Festival to Feature Pianist Rueiben Chen, & MorePacific Symphony Summer Festival to Feature Pianist Rueiben Chen, & More
by BWW News Desk - Jul 1, 2015

Orange County, Calif.—June 30, 2015—A shining jewel among the most popular piano repertoire, Beethoven's “Emperor” concerto bursts to life at Pacific Symphony's Summer Festival in the hands of internationally renowned pianist Rueiben Chen. The Boston Globe has said: “He plays with the white-hot energy, steel-fingered power and athletic virtuosity… Chen showed that he can play with delicacy and imagination.” Full of romanticism, majesty and beauty, Beethoven's Piano Concerto No. 5 is the last piece the composer wrote in concerto form and has remained the favorite among his fans. Led by Assistant Conductor Alejandro Gutiérrez in his Summer Festival debut, this concert also marks the maestro's final performance with the Symphony. This wonderful evening of music under the stars opens with Verdi's stormy and colorful “La Forza Del Destino” and concludes with Rimsky-Korsakov's “Scheherazade,” a musical rendition of “Arabian Nights.” (more...)

Monday night at the upstairs library at The Player's Club, young actor/vocalist Evan Stern collaborated with one of cabaret's treasures, the veteran pianist/arranger/vocalist Steve Ross on a show illuminating the influence of a southern upbringing on the work of iconic songwriter and Savannah, Georgia native Johnny Mercer. The piece was beautifully put together with Stern's intermittent repartee (never dropping a musical stitch), reflecting his skills as an actor as well as a writer. (more...)
