by BWW News Desk - Feb 8, 2016

Barking Rain Press, a non-profit fiction publisher, announced the paperback and eBook release of the western double feature 'Border Lords and Armstrong's War' by Dos Caballos, New Mexico, author Lee Pierce. Pierce is also the author of the western adventure novels 'Bounty Hunter's Moon' and 'The Treasure of Peta Nocona.' This exciting western themed book includes two complete novellas by author Lee Pierce. In 'Border Lords,' when the Lucasville, Arizona, sheriff is gunned down by a ruthless gang of bandits, Deputy US Marshals Pharaoh Smith ('Bounty Hunter's Moon') and Silverjack McDonald ('Rough Justice') join forces to solve the murder of their former comrade. Pharaoh is a by-the-book lawman, while Silverjack will use any means possible to get the bad guys. All is not what it seems in this volatile border town, and it will take their combined skills to discover the real reason the town was raided. In 'Armstrong's War,' Badger Armstrong (alias Quick Jim Butler) stormed out of the family ranch in the Texas panhandle after a fight with his father 15 years ago, swearing never to return. Now tired of a gunman's life, he decides to ride back Home, make peace with his father, and become part of his younger brother's life. Instead, he rides straight into a hornet's nest of hate and deceit. Mort Quarry has taken over most of the top grazing land in Deaf Smith County - except for the Armstrong ranch. Quarry is bound and determined to take over that ranch as well, and has lured Badger's gullible brother to work for him against his own father. Badger's pretty sure he can win the war against Mort Quarry - but first he'll need to survive his father's wrath while dodging bullets from his brother. Ask for 'Border Lords and Armstrong's War' at your favorite bookstore, or buy it online at the Barking Rain Press website, Amazon.com, Barnes & Noble, Books-a-Million, Powells, Waterstones, and many other Internet bookstores. Set at the turn of the nineteenth century, 'The Improbable Wonders of Moojie Littleman' is a heartrending, coming-of-age story, with a dose of humor and magical realism. After his adoptive mother dies in a freak accident, eight year-old, disabled, bi-racial Moojie is sent by his disapproving father to live at St. Isidore's Fainting Goat Dairy, where he befriends a clan of outcasts from an alternate universe. Six years later, this forbidden friendship and subsequent events reveal an extraordinary boy's tale of loss and connection, first love, and self-discovery. 'The Improbable Wonders of Moojie Littleman' is available in both print and ebook formats. BWW Review: Circuit's THE OTHER PLACE Is 'Down the Rabbit Hole'BWW Review: Circuit's THE OTHER PLACE Is 'Down the Rabbit Hole'
by Joseph Baker - Feb 8, 2016

Throughout Sunday's matinee of Sharr White's intensely watchable THE OTHER PLACE at Circuit, for some reason I kept thinking of Edgar Allan Poe's 'A Dream Within a Dream' and, particularly, of these lines: 'All that we see or seem / Is but a dream within a dream. / I stand amid the roar / Of a surf-tormented shore, / And I hold within my hand / Grains of the golden sand -- / How few! yet how they creep / Through my fingers to the deep, / While I weep -- while I weep.' THE OTHER PLACE, ably directed by the always dependable Dave Landis, is somewhat constructed like a Chinese puzzle box. Like the main character, a drug company scientist named 'Juliana Smithton' (who, in turn, is married to 'Ian,' an oncologist), the audience is continually challenged with questions of what is real and what is not. BWW Review: National Tour of CABARET Creates MelancomedyBWW Review: National Tour of CABARET Creates Melancomedy
by Dylan Shaffer - Feb 8, 2016

There was a National Tour of CABARET, and there was a theatre called the Benedum Center in a city called Pittsburgh. In this Roundabout Theatre Company production, resembling the 2014 Broadway revival starring Alan Cumming and Michelle Williams, the stage is metaphorically and literally a frame story, bordered and illuminated by lights with a superposed picture frame hung in the center. But this picture frame, seemingly beautiful along the boarders, hangs crooked to perfectly accent the actors' and show's message. (more...)

BWW Review: Tantalizing Life Tidbits Well Shared in SAFE AT HOME: An Evening With Orson BeanBWW Review: Tantalizing Life Tidbits Well Shared in SAFE AT HOME: An Evening With Orson Bean
by Shari Barrett - Feb 7, 2016

To those of us called Baby Boomers, we grew up being entertained by television shows everyone in the family could enjoy together. There was the Ed Sullivan Show, Bonanza, Gunsmoke, and many others too numerous to name. I remember watching To Tell the Truth and attempting to guess along with the panelists, one of whom was Orson Bean, who added his own humorous stamp to the show for eight years. So when I heard that his one-man show "Safe at Home, An Evening with Orson Bean" was being presented at Pacific Resident Theatre in Venice (where he has been a long-time member), I knew the stories he was going to share would be extremely humorous. And, as it turns out, deeply insightful into how he survived and thrived in the entertainment industry for so many years. (more...)
