Measha Brueggergosman Serenades Toranto for AMREF, 10/17

Canadian soprano Measha Brueggergosman, with German pianist Andreas Kern, will perform in Toronto on Saturday, October 17th. Recovering from heart surgery in June, the 32-year old style icon and classical music star is proving she's as fierce as ever. On the cusp of a brand new record release, the singer is kicking off a series of North American concerts in support of AMREF - the African Medical & Research Foundation - a cause close to her heart. An Evening with Measha Brueggergosman is at 5 PM on Saturday, October 17th, 2009 inside Toronto's historic St. Andrew's Presbyterian Church (at King and Simcoe), followed by a private reception for 100 guests. This will be Brueggergosman's sole Toronto performance of 2009. (more...)

Estes Park Productions will present an invited industry reading of Louis Nevaer's new dark comedy about the Reagan administration on November 5th. The arms-for-hostages Iran-Contra scandal in 1984 casts a shadow over Ronald Reagan's foreign policy. Jeane Kirkpatrick, American ambassador to the United Nations, is in conflict with Nora Astorga, Nicaragua's deputy foreign minister who has become that nation's ambassador to the United Nations. The women, mocked as 'Amazonian Bitches' by the delegates to this male-dominated organization, clash as each tries to sway world public opinion. Their confrontations become legendary as they work feverishly to prevail-each coming to respect the other before fate intervenes. (more...)

On Sunday, April 29, the seventh annual Opera News Awards will be presented at a gala celebration in the Grand Ballroom of The Plaza in New York City, paying tribute to five extraordinary artists who have made an invaluable contribution to the art form: sopranos Karita Mattila and Anja Silja, baritones Dmitri Hvorostovsky and Peter Mattei, and director Peter Sellars. Acclaimed mezzo-soprano Stephanie Blythe, who sings Fricka in the Metropolitan Opera's new production of Wagner's Ring, will host the awards. Among the special guests for this year's festivities are conductor James Conlon (a 2005 Opera News Award-winner), who will present the award to Ms. Silja; legendary baritone (and 2008 Opera News Award-winner) Sherrill Milnes, who will present the award to Mr. Hvorostovsky; bass-baritone Eric Owens, another star of the Met's Ring, who will present to Mr. Sellars; Finnish composer Kaija Saariaho, who will present to Ms. Mattila; and soprano Deborah Voigt, a 2007 Opera News Award-winner and the Met's current Brunnhilde, who will present the award to Mr. Mattei. The guest list will also include Her Royal Highness Princess Madeleine of Sweden, who will attend to watch her countryman, Peter Mattei, be honored.
