American Stage Theatre to Present Yasmina Reza's Comedy ART, Begin. 8/7

American Stage Theatre Company has announced the last production of their 2012-2013 Season on the Mainstage: ART by Yasmina Reza and translated by Christopher Hampton. Barbershop quartets will take center stage at New Brunswick's George Street Playhouse as they present John Markus and Mark St. Germain's a cappella musical comedy, The Fabulous Lipitones on stage beginning November 18. The cast includes You Tube sensation Rohan Kymal, and Broadway veterans Donald Corren, Wally Dunn and Jim Walton. Michael Mastro (The Subject Was Roses) returns to helm the production, and Broadway veteran Michael Lichtefeld will put the quartet through their paces as choreographer. (more...)

Jane Lynch, Joan Rivers Tribute & More Set for Kennedy Center's 2016 Comedy Lineup

The Kennedy Center today announced a robust schedule of 2015-2016 performances as part of Comedy at the Kennedy Center, the largest since the new series was established in the 2014-2015 season. Capital One is the presenting sponsor. Comedy at the Kennedy Center will include three signature events in the Concert Hall, featuring nationally renowned comedic acts, and the Center's first District of Comedy Festival from June 22-25, showcasing an array of celebrated comedians who will be performing on stages across the building. The District of Comedy Festival will also launch a newly-engaged collaboration with Chicago's legendary comedy theater, The Second City, featuring a Kennedy Center commission that focuses on the history of the United States, which will run for six weeks in the Theater Lab. Tickets for these events go on sale to members on Monday, November 23, 2015 and to the general public on Wednesday, December 2, 2015 (unless otherwise noted). (more...)

3rd Annual Wild West Comedy Festival Wraps in Nashville

This past week, Outback Concerts and Wild West Productions brought the biggest and brightest stars, as well as the hottest and most talked about up-and-comers, in comedy to Nashville. The third annual event, which is presented by Bud Light in association with Netflix and powered by SiriusXM, drew thousands of comedy fans to its over 30 shows at venues across Music City, including Ryman Auditorium, War Memorial Auditorium, TPAC's James K. Polk Theater, Zanies Nashville, Exit/In and Third Man Records. The world-renowned troupe from Salt Lake City does have the classics in its repertoire, but the decision by Artistic Director Adam Sklute to bring his superb dancers to NYC in pieces by four celebrated if sometimes controversial current choreographers was a wise one. convergence-continuum opens its 2014 Season with the Cleveland premiere of Lobster Alice by Kira Obolensky. It's 1946 and Alice Horowitz, coffee-bearing secretary, wants life to be interesting. John Finch, an animatorat work on Disney's Alice in Wonderland, wants Alice. When the great and outrageous Salvador Dali arrives at the studio to work on a short animated film (this part is actually true), life becomes curiouser and curiouser. Dali scandalizes the conservative Finch; Alice, coffee-bearing secretary, becomes Alice, girl down the rabbit hole; and Finch and Alice both experience the very surreal whimsies of the human heart. The internationally acclaimed L.A. Theatre Works is bringing its unique, hybrid radio theater-style production of The Graduate to the McCallum Theatre on February 25 at 8:00 pm. The sly and witty coming-of-age story of a young and innocent college grad seduced by an older woman was a theatrical sensation when it premiered at the Gielgud Theatre in London's West End, then transferred to Broadway. LA based actor Brian Tichnell plays the slightly neurotic Benjamin Bratton in this critically acclaimed production. I had the opportunity to chat with Tichnell about the production.
