BWW Review: FOREVER PLAID Musically Encourages Everyone to Follow Their Dream
by Shari Barrett - Feb 28, 2017

FOREVER PLAID by Stuart Ross is a musical that lends itself to offering audiences a goofy, charming musical escape, and is considered one of the most popular and successful off-Broadway musicals in history. Having never before seen a production of it, I have always been curious why those who have either been in a production or seen the show are such outspoken fans of it. Those involved with the show speak of the "brotherhood of Plaid" that exists between those who have performed or directed the show previously, with the understanding that if called upon at any time to take part in a production of the musical, it would be a crime to not jump in and make the show an audience favorite. So when I was invited to the current production at the International City Theatre in Long Beach, I jumped at the chance to see what all the fuss is about. (more...)

Stronger Than Adele? The Right Now's 'Starlight' is Out Now!
by BWW News Desk - Feb 27, 2017

The Right Now is proud to release their third full-length release: Starlight. Branching out from their traditional soul-revivalist mode, Starlight pushes the bounds of The Right Now's style. While soul and r&b undertones continue to lay the foundation for each arrangement, disco and pop elements emerge into a fresh, diverse sound. With some personal—and personnel—changes, the band took their time with the follow-up to 2012's Gets Over You. They found that getting the right sound was more important than rushing out the music. BWW Review: SUNDAY IN THE PARK WITH GEORGE at Theatre Works
by Jeanmarie Simpson - Feb 27, 2017

Alanna Kalbfleisch is an utter delight to see and hear, with luminous skin, bright eyes and dimples in both cheeks and chin. Let's face it. She's eye candy. As Dot/Marie, the comfortable authority with which Kalbfleisch moves about the stage suggests a lifetime of performance. Her voice is off-the-charts resplendent, however she is by no means all flash. The nuances in her performance are breathtaking - her pure talent and spectacular range, vocal and dramatic, are world class. (more...)

Last month I went to a private showcase of music from the musical Hamilton. The showcase was organized by pianist/arranger/singer Justin Ramos, former director of vocal music at Newbury Park High School who is now living in New York. For his cast, Ramos utilized some of the more talented singers he worked with during his tenure at NPHS to make the showcase happen. Marlie Rodriguez played the role of Eliza, Alexander Hamilton's wife, and got an outpouring of applause for her singing from the invitation-only audience. We got together a few weeks later to talk not just about the singular honor of performing songs from Hamilton, which has already revolutionized Broadway, but how she has reached a crossroads in her still young career in musical theater.
