VONNEGUT'S WORLD a Week-Long Festival Exploring the Author Set to Launch September 7-14

Vonnegut's World," a new week-long celebration of Vonnegut-themed special events leading up to the World Premiere event of "Happy Birthday, Wanda June" at Indianapolis Opera, was announced today and will be held at an array of Indianapolis venues fromSeptember 7th-14th. Presented by Indy Opera in partnership with Indianapolis Art Center, Butler University, Indy FilmFest, Bluebeard Restaurant, and Indy Reads, the festival represents a unique collaboration of area arts organizations and local venues to explore the many facets of the famed Hoosier and iconic literary figure. The schedule of events includes an opening reception, panel discussion, film screening, reading, "brunch of champions," special music performances, and final dress rehearsal of the new opera, written by Kurt Vonnegut and composed by Richard Auldon Clark. Vonnegut completed the libretto just two weeks before his death in 2007. (more...)

Break A Leg Productions to Present Staged Reading of THE BROTHER

Break A Leg Productions kicks off its Historically Speaking series with a staged reading of The Brother. Written by John Hancock and Dorothy Tristan and based on the book by New York Times reporter Sam Roberts, The Brother looks at the case of Julius and Ethel Rosenberg from the viewpoint of Ethel's brother David Greenglass. The reading will take place on Monday, September 28 at 6:30pm at The Unity Center of New York City, located at 213 West 58th Street (between 7th Avenue and Broadway). (more...)

Raging Squid Ink and Eric Schmalenberger have announced the Raging Squid Ink and Eric Schmalenberger have announced the world premiere production of Jake Thomas' THE DEAD DREAM MACHINE, video art directed by Sean Gill and directed and choreographed by Rachel Klein. THE DEAD DREAM MACHINE will play a limited engagement at La Luz (135 Thames Street, Brooklyn, NY). Performances begin tonight, September 18 and continue through Saturday, October 13. Opening Night is Friday, September 20 (8 p.m.). Known for staging “the ultimate in intimate productions” (The New York Times), On Site Opera (OSO) announces the world premiere of Rhoda and the Fossil Hunt, a new site-specific opera for family audiences with music by John Musto and libretto by Eric Einhorn. Co-commissioned and co-produced with Lyric Opera of Chicago's Lyric Unlimited and Pittsburgh Opera, Rhoda and the Fossil Hunt is based on the real-life experiences of Rhoda Knight Kalt and her trips to the American Museum of Natural History (AMNH) with her grandfather Charles R. Knight, the famous naturalist artist who was commissioned to create paintings and sculptures of prehistoric creatures – many still on display at the AMNH today. (more...)

BWW Review: Burbage Theatre Company's Excellent HAPPY BIRTHDAY, WANDA JUNE

HAPPY BIRTHDAY WANDA JUNE is the only full length play by Kurt Vonnegut Jr., based on his novel of the same name.  Like many Vonnegut works, it captures beautifully the absurdity of life, death and senseless violence all while making you laugh so hard you worry you'll hurt yourself.  Burbage Theatre Company has taken this under-utilized gem and shined it up perfectly.  Though the play takes place in 1970, it's shocking to note how well it holds up, especially when acted and directed so well. THE NORWEGIANS Resumes Performances 1/9 at Drilling Company

After a six-week hiatus, 'The Norwegians' by C. Denby Swanson will resume Off-Broadway performances on January 9, 2014 at The Drilling Company, 236 West 78th Street. The production, which began Off-off Broadway last season, has had 75 performances so far. It played Off-off Broadway from March 8 to April 14, 2013 and re-opened October 3, 2014 on an Off-Broadway contract. The Off-Broadway run was suspended November 24, 2013 to accommodate a pre-existing commitment for the theater space. Encouraged by solid audience demand, The Drilling Company has decided to resume the Off-Broadway production January 9, 2014 as an open-ended run. (more...)
