BWW Reviews: Antaeus Offers Sumptuous and Scintillating PICNICBWW Reviews: Antaeus Offers Sumptuous and Scintillating PICNIC
by Don Grigware - Jun 28, 2015

William Inge's Pulitzer-Prize-winning Picnic depicting a small Kansas town in 1952, its strict code of morality and the inner longings of its people to break away, is perhaps his finest. Now in a stunning production at Antaeus directed ever so lovingly by Cameron Watson and boasting a superlative ensemble - actually three alternating casts: 'Deviled Eggs', 'Stuffed Peppers' and 'Pork Chops', Picnic still holds up some 60 years later, proving the omnipotence of human fragility. My visit was with the 'Deviled Eggs'cast. The music, the clothes, the hairstyles, and the cars are distinctly 50s, but goals, motivations and emotions remain the same. For those unfamiliar with the play or the uber popular 1956 film Picnic starring William Holden and Kim Novak, let's recap the plot briefly. (more...)

Bookworks Presents Its June Edition of IT'S ABOUT BOOKSBookworks Presents Its June Edition of IT'S ABOUT BOOKS
by BWW News Desk - Jun 26, 2015

Wow!  What a book The Girl on the Train is by Paula Hawkins!  It is a thriller to beat all thrillers.  Just the perfect mix of everything: murder, deceit, illicit affairs, buried secrets and one very alcoholic protagonist who doesn't remember anything until the end, of coarse.  Rachel, our narrator, lives in a blur between being stupid drunk and fantasy land.  Alcohol has destroyed her marriage however she is, in her mind, still inexorably tied to her ex-husband Tom who has wasted no time in marrying Anna. Tom has moved Anna into the house along the train tracks that he and Rachel once shared.  Rachel can't help herself.  She calls and harasses Tom and Anna each time she gets stupid drunk, which is every night. by Amanda Etchison - Jun 23, 2015

Humid summer nights spent grilling and mowing lawns in a subdivision might initially seem like an odd concept for a musical, but a new production performed by Columbus' own Shots in the Dark Theatre Company took inspiration from these often-mundane surroundings to create a new musical that explores the satirical and sometimes sinister aspects of the great American Dream. by BWW News Desk - Jun 23, 2015

While Robin Williams (1951–2014) was best known for his dazzling comic improvisations, his film work showed remarkable range. This special screening in advance of its theatrical release will be followed by a discussion with director (and Astoria, Queens native) Dito Montiel (A Guide to Recognizing Your Saints) in person. The Museum will precede this program, on June 27, with screenings of two additional films starring Williams in dramatic roles: Robert Altman's Popeye (1980) and Penny Marshall's Awakenings (1990).
