BWW Reviews: FAILURE: A LOVE STORYBWW Reviews: FAILURE: A LOVE STORY
by Kristen Morale - May 26, 2015

The idea of love and what is meant to come of it usually implies a happy ending for the woman who falls in love with her soul-mate, or for the man who couldn't imagine a life without the daily practice of bestowing affection upon his beloved. Love is meant to bring out the best in people and allow them to flourish, implying that a greater and more joyous future is to come because fate has somehow brought them together for just such a reason: to be happy. What happens, though, when the concept of fate seems to be a bit more of an interference than it is a means of bringing people together towards the Happiness they so desire? What is to be expected when every effort of moving forward and bringing love back into one's life becomes such an onerous task, such a fruitless endeavor that the concept of love becomes a personally unreachable goal? In what is both a fairly comical yet rather somber telling of a man who falls in love with three sisters and is perpetually left alone once each meets her untimely end, Failure: A Love Story triumphantly kicks off Cape Rep's 2015 season and will no doubt leave its audiences thinking that the only failure to be found in this show is solely found in its name. BWW Reviews: Los Angeles Premiere of VIOLET Provides an Unparalleled Spiritual Journey of Great Depth by Kelrik ProductionsBWW Reviews: Los Angeles Premiere of VIOLET Provides an Unparalleled Spiritual Journey of Great Depth by Kelrik Productions
by Don Grigware - May 26, 2015

When Violet first premiered off-Broadway in 1997, it created a stir winning two prizes for Best Musical but didn't make waves until 2014 when it transferred to Broadway in an all new production starring Sutton Foster. It heartfully tells the story of a disfigured girl from Spruce Pine, North Carolina Violet Karl who makes a journey to Tulsa, Oklahoma in the hopes of being physically transformed by a faith healer. An accident occurred when she was a teen - a blade that her father was using cut her face, leaving an ugly scar - and Violet always blamed her father proclaiming that he did not want her to be pretty. She would have no male prospects and be forced to stay on to live with him on their small farm. The scar runs deep - 'it reaches to your heart' new acquaintances tell her, so the journey to find a brand new 'glamorized' look means everything to Violet who will sacrifice just about anything to have it all. by Jeffrey Walker - May 25, 2015

The Lusty Month of May; like the song says: "It's time to do a wicked thing or two!" It's May, the time when spring brings that hot-blooded, four letter word: lust. Musicals have had a steady history of lusty musical numbers. There are songs about rolling in the hay, and others extolling the virtues of different (ahem) flavors of man-candy. Some songs are paens to hot, steamy nights, and some are about what you do on those kind of nights.  (more...)

BWW Reviews: LOVE AGAIN Premieres at Group RepBWW Reviews: LOVE AGAIN Premieres at Group Rep
by Don Grigware - May 20, 2015

It is refreshing in this day and age to see an attempt to create a new musical. With few exceptions, it appears to be a dying art. If not, we would not be witnessing a raft of old steady revivals on Broadway, off-Broadway and in regional venues across the globe. Doug Haverty and Adryan Russ, no strangers to successful musical ventures, have taken the topic of love and have created Love Again, a bold effort at showing the intermingling of different aspects of love with a semi-large cast. Under the steady hand of Kay Cole all manage to shine in one form or another and a lot of it works delightfully. There's much potential with some more work and readjustments to the book. Many of the songs are quite lovely, and love, in all of its shades and colors, is always a treat to experience. Love Again has its niche at Group rep in NoHo through June 28. (more...)

BWW Reviews: Adorable ANNIE Returns In (Another) New TourBWW Reviews: Adorable ANNIE Returns In (Another) New Tour
by Michael L. Quintos - May 18, 2015

A safe, inoffensive, cutesy crowd-pleaser for the young and the young-at-heart, the brand new non-Equity touring revival of the Broadway classic ANNIE is eager to please and pretty much does so. The show is, by all accounts, a cute if standard-issue charmer, filled with hummable ear-worm music (via lyricist/book writer Martin Charnin and composer Charles Strouse) and enjoyably hyperbolic characters that audiences will delight in either cheering or jeering. Sure, ANNIE may not be the best or most groundbreaking musical ever created, but it certainly has its heartwarming place in the genre. The tour continues at Orange County's Segerstrom Center for the Arts in Costa Mesa through May 24. (more...)

Loosely based on the fictitious life of Pippin the Hunchback, this musical tells the story of the young prince Pippin, Heir to the Frankish throne, who is in search of the secret to true Happiness and fulfillment. He seeks it in the glories of the battlefield, the temptations of the flesh and the intrigues of political power (after disposing of his father King Charlemagne the Great). In the end, though, Pippin finds that Happiness lies not in extraordinary endeavors, but rather in the un-extraordinary moments that happen every day. (more...)

BWW Recap: GREY'S Season Finale May Act as Series ResurrectionBWW Recap: GREY'S Season Finale May Act as Series Resurrection
by Desiree Fantal - May 14, 2015

We survived the eleventh season of GREY'S ANATOMY, and most of us remained relatively unscathed. This, of course, does not include the thousands of supporters of the insane “raise McDreamy from the dead” campaign. If it helps at all, I heard on the radio* this morning that Patrick Dempsey was fired for having an extramarital affair with a cast mate. He must've taken his character a little too seriously; much like many of the fans. Let him go. Full disclosure: I'm still not over T.R. Knight's departure. #Hypocrite. (more...)
