BWW Reviews: The Orpheum Thinks ONCE Is Not EnoughBWW Reviews: The Orpheum Thinks ONCE Is Not Enough
by Joseph Baker - Oct 29, 2014

Despite the fact that I am a great lover of cinema, the film version of ONCE (2006) somehow eluded me; now, the musical stage adaptation, with music by Glen Hansard and Marketa Irglova and a book by Enda Walsh, is affording Memphians an 'off season' 'pub crawl' at the historic Orpheum Theatre - and though I have never been particularly fond of Irish whimsy (Barry Fitzgerald's coy old priest in GOING MY WAY is probably the source of that), and though PBS repeats of performances of clarion-voiced Irish lasses sawing away at violins and Riverdancers send me reaching for the remote, I am happy to report that . . . I finally 'get it.' ONCE is a refreshingly 'laid back' vehicle for a musical; its often wistful, incisive, perceptive numbers are an intimate alternative to the often overblown showstoppers of larger musicals. by Shari Barrett - Oct 24, 2014

Set in Appalachia and written entirely in verse, Biguenet's charming and mesmerizing solo play introduces us to a wacky, bizarre old woman living in an odd little shack deep in the woods… who just happens to be a witch. Creepily funny and frightening, Jenny O'Hara takes us back to our childhoods when, in our innocence, we first wrestled with good and evil. As she unveils her life, we journey with her down a shadowy path somewhere between our material world and the realm of fantasy. But we soon find out this is no Hansel and Gretel fairytale; in BROOMSTICK, justice has been meted out swiftly and harshly by the Witch during her entire lifetime. (more...)

BWW Commentary: The Mistreatment of Women on BOARDWALKBWW Commentary: The Mistreatment of Women on BOARDWALK
by Jessica Naftaly - Oct 23, 2014

BOARDWALK EMPIRE writes some of the best female characters around, many can agree, but the treatment of said characters on the show reflects quite the opposite insinuation about the writers. While the show has tackled many feminist issues such as women's health, the right to vote, the temperance movement, and the misogynistic mindset of the men at the time, it's also reduced so many of it's female characters to forgo pointless deaths in order to further characterize and develop their male counterparts, or how I like to put it, allow for the men to feel some “man pain” to make us connect further with them emotionally.
