by Alix Cohen - Feb 27, 2015

Vocalist Joey Arias is not what he appears to the uninitiated. This is not a drag performer executing pastiche, but rather an artist serious about music with the talent to offer a full-blooded show. Lifelong affinity for Billie Holiday first professionally surfaced in 1987's Recording Arias on Holiday and continued with the Off-Broadway run of Strange Fruit, an homage to the icon. Her concert Wednesday night for Lincoln Center's American Songbook series, with evocative musical arrangement by Matt Ray, brings Arias' devotion "all the way from downtown above 14th Street." by BWW News Desk - Feb 27, 2015

Before the age of airplane transportation and luxury cruises, a vacation to the otherwise unattainable Hawaiian Islands was the stuff of dreams accessed by way of picture books, films and wishful conversation. Now the world introduces itself to Hawaii again and again throughout the seasons, and no time is better than the present to visit its second largest island. Maui has been voted "Best Island" by Conde Nast Traveler for the last 19 years, and it consistently succeeds as the ultimate vacation destination. (more...)

For those of you who could not I attend I hope that you can live vicariously though me, and for those of you who were lucky enough to be in the house that night I hope that I can in some way put all of the emotions you felt into words since I know it is surprisingly difficult to explain what we experienced that evening. Sometimes a little retooling and freshening up of an old classic isn't such a bad thing. I mean I was a little dubious when I heard they were remounting the classic of "Rodgers and Hammerstein's Cinderella" especially when I heard it was getting an all new book. But the tour of this new version still keeps all the magic and charm alive while adding in some humor and elements that just make the characters all the more rich and engaging. (more...)

BWW Review: Theatre UCF's '(a love story)' is an Entertaining Modern Take on Classic TragedyBWW Review: Theatre UCF's '(a love story)' is an Entertaining Modern Take on Classic Tragedy
by Matt Tamanini - Feb 24, 2015

'Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud.' For many, those words are the definition of what a love story should be about. However, in Theatre UCF's play '(a love story),' which runs through March 1st, three intertwining tales chronicle all of the fevered, messy emotions involved with falling in, and out, of love. The highly-stylized play casts a disapproving eye on love in the modern world, all the while casing the storytelling in the trappings of a classic tragedy. Playwright Kelly Lusk occasionally uses the familiar structure to illuminate the universality of love, but more often than not, he allows it to run roughshod over the story being told, robbing it of any genuine emotion. Nonetheless, Theatre UCF's production is marked with uniformly impressive performances and thrilling production design; reaffirming why Central Florida's colleges provide some of the best, cutting-edge theatre in the region. BWW Reviews: SMT's SWEET CHARITY Fails to Engage With Its StoryBWW Reviews: SMT's SWEET CHARITY Fails to Engage With Its Story
by Jay Irwin - Feb 22, 2015

Cy Coleman, Dorothy Fields and Neil Simon's "Sweet Charity", currently playing at Seattle Musical Theatre, is not a perfect musical. There's plenty that it has going for it but it's loaded with plenty of extraneous things as well. The story is fairly depressing, the book is too wordy and there are some songs that just plain don't need to be there. So in order to get it to engage it has to be done just right. Well, unfortunately I still haven't seen a production that was there. (more...)

With original choreography by Marius Petipa, it is considered one of the greatest story ballets of all time and the epitome of classical ballet. The story represents much more than just the fairy tale, showing us that even when poisoned by the forces of evil, the power of love can surmount any roadblock and triumph. Los Angeles Ballet Co-Artistic Directors Thordal Christensen and Colleen Neary have adapted the ballet with their own original choreography, based after Petipa. At 60-something-years-old, one can accurately describe Tovah Feldshuh as what plucky is when it grows up. Feldshuh's mother Lily died at 103 having lived, one gathers, like the character her daughter played in Pippin: 'Oh, it's time to start livin'/Time to take a little from this world we're given/Time to take time, cause spring will turn to fall/In just no time at all . . .' Later in her 54 Below show Aging Is Optional (which Feldshuh presents again tonight at 7 pm), we all sing the chorus, though no one with more gusto than the artist who delivers its lyric like a battle cry. Would it tell something about the characters' plight or condition? After all, this is contemporary Dublin, Ireland.
