AZ Opera's Rusalka Presents Magical Version of LITTLE MERMAID

Dark forests, woodland sprites and an evil witch, 'Jezibaba' come to the Arizona Opera stage as the company presents its first ever production of Dvo?ak's Rusalka.  The story follows the classic Hans Christian Andersen fairytale 'Little Mermaid' with dramatic flair as the mermaid Rusalka seeks to be part of the human world.  This new production will be set in the Habsburg Empire of the 1800s and features the show-stopping aria, 'Song to the Moon'.  Rusalka is sung in Czech with English supertitles. Violinist Yevgeny Kutik, and Pianist and Composer Timo Andres Perform at National Sawdust

On Wednesday, October 19, 2016 at 7pm, Russian-American violinist Yevgeny Kutik, known for his 'dark-hued tone and razor-sharp technique' (The New York Times) and pianist/composer Timo Andres, will perform a concert at National Sawdust (80 North 6th St.). The performance is part of Andres' engagement as a National Sawdust curator for the 2016-2017 season, and will include a selection of works from Kutik's new album, Words Fail, out October 28 on Marquis Classics, including two of Mendelssohn's Songs without Words (arr. Friedrich Hermann), the New York premiere of Andres' Words Fail, and the world premiere of Michael Gandolfi's Arioso Doloroso/Estatico, both of which Kutik commissioned for the album. The duo will also perform Nico Muhly's Compare Notes, Stravinsky's Suite Italienne, and the world premiere of Andres' arrangement of a short work by Janacek titled Words Fail.  (more...)

Spectrum Theatre Company is pleased to bring you ONCE ON THIS ISLAND, playing OCTOBER 20TH - 30th on stage at The Boyd Vance Theater at the George Washington Carver Museum. Once on This Island is a one-act musical with a book and lyrics by Lynn Ahrens and music by Stephen Flaherty. Based on the 1985 novel My Love, My Love; or, The Peasant Girl by Rosa Guy, it is set in the French Antilles archipelago in the Caribbean Sea. The show includes elements of the Romeo and Juliet story and elements of the Hans Christian Andersen fairy tale The Little Mermaid. It concerns a peasant girl on a tropical island, who uses the power of love to bring together people of different social classes. The original Broadway production ran from 1990 to 1991, and the West End production opened in 1994, where it won the 1995 Olivier Award for Best New Musical. (more...)

The West End production remains as sold-out and beloved as ever, and rumors have long been circulating that Harry Potter and the Cursed Child will make a Broadway transfer. Now, according to Page Six, the eight Harry Potter story will make its debut at the Al Hirschfeld next season. Currently home to the long-running Kinky Boots, if Cursed Child were to move into the Al Hirschfeld, it would be a major score for Jujamcyn, which has already announced that the expected Disney juggernaut, Frozen, will move into the St. James following a major renovation to accommodate Elsa'a ice castle. BWW Interview: Larry Raben of THE LITTLE MERMAID at Cabrillo Music Theatre

Larry Raben is an accomplished actor and director who has added his prodigious abilities to a multitude of productions around the world. In addition to acting in a command performance before Queen Elizabeth II in London and producing Sweet Charity in Argentina, Raben has also graced Cabrillo Music Theatre's stages in productions of Singin' in the Rain, The Producers, and, most recently, A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum. Raben is directing Cabrillo's summer offering this year, Disney's The Little Mermaid, which will prove to be the final production overseen by Cabrillo's longtime artistic director, Lewis Wilkenfeld. We talked with Larry not only about his plans for the show, one of Cabrillo's most challenging and ambitious productions, but also about working with the indefatigable Wilkenfeld. (more...)

Bergen County Players, the New Jersey Association of Community Theater's "2015 Community Theater of the Year", is proud to announce its 84th consecutive season, running from September 2016 to June 2017.
