Whidbey Island Dance Theatre's "The Snow Queen" returns to Langley in a co-production with Whidbey Island Center for the Arts which staged the ballet with WIDT 18 years ago to sold-out houses. TheatreWorks, the nationally acclaimed theatre of Silicon Valley, presents ONCE ON THIS ISLAND from the Tony Award-winning creators of Ragtime. A timeless legend filled with joy, heartache, and adventure, ONCE ON THIS ISLAND, winner of the Oliver Award for Best New Musical, boasts a score pulsing with irresistible Caribbean beats by Tony Award-winner Stephen Flaherty, with book and lyrics by Lynn Ahrens. TheatreWorks Artistic Director Robert Kelley will direct this uplifting musical, which takes its story from a book by Rosa Guy, in turn inspired by Hans Christian Andersen's 'The Little Mermaid.' New York Philharmonic to Return to Bravo! Vail for 12th Annual Summer Residency, 7/18-25

The New York Philharmonic will return to Bravo! Vail in Colorado for the Orchestra's 12th- annual summer residency there, performing six concerts July 18-25, 2014. Music Director Alan Gilbert will conduct three programs, July 18-20, featuring works by composers for whom he has advocated during his tenure, ranging from Nielsen to The Marie-Jose?e Kravis Composer-in- Residence Christopher Rouse. The other Philharmonic concerts will be conducted by Bramwell Tovey (July 23 and 25) and Ted Sperling (July 24), and will feature works by Copland, Gershwin, Tchaikovsky, Rachmaninoff, and Loesser, among others. 2014 Shortlist Announced for The 2014 Hans Christian Andersen Award

SWARTHMORE, Pa., March 17, 2014 /PRNewswire/ Six authors and six illustrators have been selected from 58 candidates submitted by 33 national sections of IBBY for the 2014 Hans Christian Andersen Award. The award, launched in 1958, is considered the most prestigious in international children's literature. It is given biennially by the International Board on Books for Young People to an author and illustrator whose complete works have made lasting contributions to children's literature. LA Master Chorale to Perform Minimalist Masterworks at Disney Hall, 4/6

The Los Angeles Master Chorale (LAMC), heralded around the globe for its exceptional artistry and wide ranging repertoire, showcases 'Minimalist Masterworks,' featuring works by celebrated American composers Steve Reich and David Lang, on Sunday, April 6, 2014, 7 pm, at Walt Disney Concert Hall. The concert opens with Perotin's Sederunt principes featuring tenor soloists Pablo Cora, Michael Lichtenauer and Shawn Kirchner. The Chorale then reprises Reich's You Are (Variations), commissioned, premiered and recorded by the Chorale in 2004 (Nonesuch), and Lang's Pulitzer Prize-winning the little match girl passion, of which LAMC presented an extended choral version last season hailed as 'a performance to remember' (Outwest Arts). ListenUp!, a pre-concert talk with Gershon and KUSC's Alan Chapman, is slated for 6 pm, in BP Hall. The concert is part of the second installment of the Los Angeles Philharmonic's citywide, multi-disciplinary Minimalist Jukebox Festival, curated by composer John Adams. (more...)

Olga Peretyatko to Release ARABESQUE, 2/18

On February 18, Sony Classical (USA) will release Arabesque, soprano Olga Peretyatko's second album on the label. Her new CD coincides with a 2013-14 season that not only showcases the young star in important European debuts—including Berlin and Milan—it also offers an opportunity to hear her eagerly anticipated Metropolitan Opera debut when she returns to New York in the spring. Lyric Opera of Chicago presents Antonin Dvorák's Rusalka, the famed Czech composer's darkly sensual fairy tale, which makes its eagerly anticipated company premiere in a new production opening on Saturday, February 22, with six performances through Sunday, March 16. Players Theatre Presents THE LITTLE MERMAID Through 4/27

In 1837 Hans Christian Anderson wrote his most beloved tale 'The Little Mermaid'. 177 years later she is still swimming her way into the hearts of young and old. On February 16th, Literally Alive Children's Theatre will open their musical adaptation of this classic tale with books and lyrics by Brenda Bell and music by Michael Sgouros at the Players Theatre located at 115 MacDougal Street (between Bleeker and West 3rd) in Manhattan. Their adaptation is true to the original story by Hans Christian Andersen, unlike the Disney version, which has a different ending. 'We tell the story in its original form' says Artistic Director Brenda Bell, 'We believe that the true ending shows children that every wish has a price and that love comes with many sacrifices.'
