Duncan Sheik Announces Northeast Tour Dates, 6/12-27

Grammy and Tony award winning musician Duncan Sheik has confirmed a select number of East Coast tour dates. He will be performing from his extensive catalogue including songs from his back catalogue as well as this latest theatre works, Spring Awakening and American Psycho. In 2013-2014 Sheik spent time at Sneaky Studios in Garrison, NY recording his first album of orginal material (not related to a theatre production) since 2006's White Limousine. Children's Book Illustrator Peter Brown Wins 2014 Bull-Bransom Award

Children's book author/illustrator Peter Brown is the recipient of the 2014 Bull-Bransom Award, announced the National Museum of Wildlife Art in Jackson Hole, Wyo. Brown was selected for the award, given annually for excellence in children's book illustration with a wildlife and nature focus, for his 2013 picture book Mr. Tiger Goes Wild (Little Brown and Company). Brown was announced as the Bull-Bransom Award winner at a ceremony presented as part of the National Museum of Wildlife Art's Celebration of Young Artists event held at the museum on May 1. STAGE TUBE: On This Day 5/11- ONCE UPON A MATTRESS

Today in 1959, Once Upon a Mattress opened at the Phoenix Theatre, where it ran for 244 performances. Once Upon a Mattress is a musical comedy with music by Mary Rodgers, lyrics by Marshall Barer and book by Jay Thompson, Dean Fuller, and Marshall Barer. The play was written as an adaptation of the Hans Christian Andersen fairy tale The Princess and the Pea. Once Upon A Mattress marked the Broadway debut of later stage and TV legend Carol Burnett, who originated the role of Princess Winnifred. Also featured were Joseph Bova, Allen Case, Jack Gilford and Matt Mattox. Jane White played the role of Queen Aggravain, becoming the first African-American actress to portray a white character on the Broadway stage. (more...)

San Jose Rep's THE SNOW QUEEN: THE NEW MUSICAL to Play NYMF, 7/14-20

The Snow Queen:The New Musical that made its world premiere at San Jose Repertory Theatre last December, is an 'Official Selection of the 2014 New York Musical Theatre Festival,' the most prestigious musical theatre festival in the world. A full featured production of the fantastical coming-of-age tale based on Hans Christian Andersen's story was chosen as the one 'Family Musical' in the annual festival that runs July 7 - July 27, 2014. Half of the original cast will return, including Jane Pfitsch, who will take time off from Cabaret on Broadway with Alan Cumming to reprise her role as the Snow Queen. The show will have five performances at The Alice Giffin Jewel Box Theatre at the Pershing Square Signature Center. (more...)

BWW Jr: Autism Friendly Performances at NYMF

This month, the New York Musical Theatre Festival (NYMF) is teaming up wiht the Theatre Development Fund's Autism Theatre Initiative (ATI) to launch its first ever autism friendly series for kids. The shows will be performed in a supportive environment for an audience of families and friends with children or adults who are diagnosed with autism spectrum disorder or other sensitivity issues. Slight adjustments to the production may be made, including reduction of any jarring sounds or light cues. The theatre lobby will have a quiet/activity area, staffed with autism specialists, for those who need to leave their seats during the performance. Social narratives and pictures of the theares and productions designed to personalize the experience for each attendee with ASD will be available for download in advance of the performances.
