Today in 1959, Once Upon a Mattress opened at the Phoenix Theatre, where it ran for 244 performances. Once Upon a Mattress is a musical comedy with music by Mary Rodgers, lyrics by Marshall Barer and book by Jay Thompson, Dean Fuller, and Marshall Barer. The play was written as an adaptation of the Hans Christian Andersen fairy tale The Princess and the Pea. Once Upon A Mattress marked the Broadway debut of later stage and TV legend Carol Burnett, who originated the role of Princess Winnifred. Also featured were Joseph Bova, Allen Case, Jack Gilford and Matt Mattox. Jane White played the role of Queen Aggravain, becoming the first African-American actress to portray a white character on the Broadway stage. (more...)

Good Theater to Present James Lapine's ACT ONE

Good Theater the professional theater company in residence at the St. Lawrence Arts Center, 76 Congress Street, Portland will close its 14th season with the regional theater premiere of ACT ONE by James Lapine from the autobiography by Moss Hart.  Good Theater is the first company to do Act One since its Broadway debut in 2014.  The production opens April 6 and runs through May 1.  Tickets are available by calling the Good Theater box office at 207-885-5883 or going to the company's website www.goodtheater.com  where tickets may be purchased on line. Marin Theatre Company's THE LITTLE MERMAID Opens Tomorrow

?This spring, Marin Theatre Company will round out its first ever fully self-produced Family Series season of Theatre for Young Audiences (TYA) plays with an adaptation of Hans Christian Andersen's classic tale, The Little Mermaid. In this version adapted by Mike Kenny, characters dubbed "Flotsam" and "Jetsam" act as simple but mystical bits of ocean rubbage who happen to be very imaginative storytellers. The pair act on a minimal set using props from a treasure trunk to take on the forms of the characters in their story, including The Little Mermaid herself, the mermaid's sisters, a handsome prince, and the infamous Sea Witch. Children will love this reinterpretation of the classic story for its creativity, humor, and excitement. (more...)

Palo Alto Players, the Peninsula's first theatre company, announces its 86th season - 'From Stage to Screen and Back Again' - featuring a collection of plays and musicals whose time-honored stories have been theatrical hits both on stage and in film.
