Theater at Monmouth's 44th season continues with the opening of Gilbert and Sullivan's comic opera, Patience, or Bunthorne's Bride today, September 20 at 7:30 p.m. The society ladies in the village are mad for aesthetic poets but the poets are in love with Patience, the village milkmaid. The young ladies' military suitors see no point to overblown verses but give it a try to win back the ladies' hearts. Things are touch and go for a while but in the end everyone lands a suitable partner, even if it is only a tulip or lily. (more...)

Kimilee, Jarlath, and Emilio have been working on this piece for over two years and Jarlath and Emilio for even longer. It takes an awful lot to get a show produced, especially in NYC! Previously known as Salute a Tutti which means 'Health to all' certainly does represent the story, however, in working on the piece, we decided on Miracolo . The story takes place on an island called 'Miracolo' where, at a beautiful spa many miracles take place (including true love) and also in Roma in a hospital and surrounding piazzas where miracles can also happen. The story is about a prince and princess from two different kingdoms who were wed at infancy. While the prince anxiously anticipates meeting his now 21 year old bride, she has started a women's university, preaching the virtues of woman over man, and that 'man is nature's sole mistake'. When Princess Ida does not show up as agreed upon, Prince Hilarion and a couple of friends infiltrate the university as new students, and hilarity ensues. The two kings threaten war to solve the problem, the prince offers love. Ida must decide whether she can continue her noble experiment. (more...)

Dominic Chianese to Make Cafe Carlyle Debut, 4/2

Dominic Chianese has long been a man of many talents. While he is best known to most for his role as Corrado 'Junior' Soprano on 'The Sopranos,' he is an accomplished singer and guitarist. He has released two albums and performed live throughout his remarkable acting career, which includes roles in numerous films and TV shows, and on Broadway and Off-Broadway stages. Chianese will make his Cafe Carlyle debut April 2 in An Evening with Dominic Chianese, which will also feature guitarist Mark Sica and and a pianist TBA. Chianese will perform songs running the gambit of American music, from country to the Great American Songbook, as well as standards in Italian and Spanish. (more...)

In 1874, W.S. Gilbert and Arthur Sullivan wrote their first of 14 comedic operas together. As a duo Gilbert and Sullivan enjoyed early success with their notable operas H.M.S. PINFORE and THE PIRATES OF PENZANCE. Moreover, modern musical theatre traces its roots to this influential theatre duo. Therefore, it is no surprise that the comedic operas penned by Gilbert and Sullivan still delight and enthrall audiences all these years later. The Gilbert and Sullivan Society of Houston was founded by a handful of Gilbert and Sullivan aficionadas in 1952. Their inaugural summer performance was THE GONDOLIERS. Thomas returns to NJSO stages after his performance of Mahler's Das Lied von der Erde with the Orchestra in January. Candid Concert Opera Chicago presents Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart's Cos fan tutte. An ingenious mix of poignant drama and hilarious farce, Cos fan tutte follows two young soldiers who disguise their identities to test their lover's fidelity. The opera will be sung in Italian with English supertitles. Two performances only, May 9 at the Stan Mansion, 2408 N. Kedzie Avenue and May 10 at Edgebrook Lutheran Church, 5252 W. Devon Avenue.
