BWW Interview: Ana Gasteyer on the Grueling Differences Between WICKED and SATURDAY NIGHT LIVE, 'Meditation' of Live Theatre, and Her Café Carlyle Debut
by Casey Mink - Oct 25, 2016

Ana Gasteyer is a true renaissance woman. Having been a cast member on SATURDAY NIGHT LIVE for six seasons, she subverted some expectations after leaving the sketch show by going on to play Elphaba in WICKED, originating the role in Chicago's sit-down production before eventually taking her Green Girl to Broadway. Gasteyer has also had extensive success in the concert capacity, and she is now preparing for a major milestone in any solo performer's career: her debut at the Cafe Carlyle. BroadwayWorld spoke with Gasteyer ahead of her Carlyle shows, the first of which is on October 25, about the differences between SNL and eight shows a week (both are grueling, but disparately so), why she yearns for the emotional connection of performing live, and whether or not Donald Trump makes her miss being in the trenches of live comedy. The Actors' Gang's Cynthia Ettinger ever so smoothly directs her very exceptional cast as they infuse life to six real-life, wrongly convicted death row survivors and the peripheral people besides them. Dr. Lauze Volk Offers Five Tips for Eating Healthier and Stressing Less
by BWW News Desk - Oct 19, 2016

We are entering a stretch of holidays where there's the opportunity to stress out about food. Halloween's candy corn is often followed by a Thanksgiving feast (or two) that ushers in a month's-worth of cookies, cakes and candy. Don't stress. Central Kentucky's Dr. Lauze Volk, FAAP, FACP, says managing your eating this time of year is all about choices. Dr. Volk owns Lexington, Kentucky's Libelle Aesthetics & Weight Loss Center and has been practicing medicine since 1998. Based on common questions from the dozens of patients she sees weekly, Dr. Volk offers five tips to end 2016 on a healthy, stress-free note: 1. Know your goal. Do you want to lower your cholesterol, fit into your favorite jeans by 2017 or simply feel better? Knowing your goal gives perspective and creates accountability. When you reach your goal (or make steps forward), take a moment to pause and celebrate. 2. Don't stress about eating healthy. It's OK to have cheat days. 'I don't diet, but I make healthy choices,' explains Dr. Volk. 'I eat pretty much everything I want, but in smaller portions. For example, I love fries, but I'll only eat a few, not the whole carton. If you go overboard one day, shake it off and approach the next day with a guilt-free stance.' 3. Create a healthy balance by avoiding 'family style.' You are likely to eat more than you would like if you place large portions on your plate. 'My children don't eat healthy, but I offer salads and healthy options so they become familiar with adding them into their lifestyle. I have found baby carrots to be a great vegetable option that kids tend to like,' adds Dr. Volk. 4. Road Warrior? It can be challenging to eat healthy while traveling. Dr. Volk suggests packing bags of snacks that can easily be thrown into your bag or purse. Nuts, apple slices, grapes, string cheese, and nutrition bars travel well and are smart choices. 5. Remember, each day is different. Don't ruin your current day by thinking about yesterday. Dr. Volk suggests, 'You don't need yesterday; today, you will try to be better. Eating health is a constant battle, the process and goals are what you have to keep in mind. Instead of stressing or feeling Guilty, go for a walk!' Dr. Volk opened Libelle Aesthetics & Weight Loss Center in February 2016. The Libelle team helps patients find the appropriate individualized treatment for their aesthetics and weight management needs. The medical spa offers treatments for all skin types ranging from those to treat acne, to microdermabrasion, body sculpting and laser hair reduction. For weight management, Dr. Volk oversees the hCG rapid medical weight loss program that targets problem fat around the abdomen, hips and thighs. The complete list of services is online. About Libelle Aesthetics & Weight Loss Center - The Lexington, KY.-based Dr. Lauze Volk, FAAP, FACP is a Medicine-Pediatrics trained physician with a specialty in Perinatal Medicine. Dr. Volk opened Libelle Aesthetics & Weight Loss Center in early 2016. The medical spa offers a full range of aesthetic treatments as well as weight management programming. L.A. Theatre Works JUDGMENT AT NUREMBERG Presents Post- Show Discussion
by BWW News Desk - Nov 9, 2016

Abby Mann's stage adaptation of his Oscar-winning drama follows a US-led war crimes tribunal as it weighs the fate of German judges. Hans Rolfe is a defense attorney for a fiercely independent jurist who once called Hitler 'ill-mannered,' is he Guilty of heinous crimes against humanity, or was he merely enforcing his country's sanctioned laws in the name of 'national security?' Judgment at Nuremberg is an absorbing probe of the ethics of personal responsibility versus public duty. BWW Review: Theatre Schmeater's Toast TWILIGHT ZONE: LIVE! Turns Twenty-Four, Still Got It
by Amelia Reynolds - Nov 25, 2016

It's that time of the year again! Theatre Schmeater's 'Twilight Zone: Live!' celebrates its 24th birthday with three culturally pertinent episode adaptations. As a first timer with high expectations, the first few moments seeing my beloved Twilight Zone in color were jarring. This passes. In this perfect homage that clearly expresses reverence with just the right sprinkling of poking-fun, 'Twilight Zone: Live!' is a cozy, kooky production that continues to be as timeless as infinity. BWW Blog: Intolerance in the Art World Today
by Barry Kostrinsky - Nov 25, 2016

Who would have thunk it? The all excepting art world ready to hang shit on a wall or in a can, Piss on paper, have someone wank off under the platform of an exhibit or watch a dog get killed in a gallery has become intolerant. It is a strange sort of funny that shakes my bones when I see the liberal left, the intellectuals of the world and great thinkers show blatant disregard for the principals they preach. (more...)

BWW Review: FAHRENHEIT 451 by Different Stages At The Vortex
by Frank Benge - Nov 21, 2016

FAHRENHEIT 451 is a play based on the 1953 dystopian novel of the same name by Ray Bradbury. The novel is regarded as one of his best works. It presents a future society where books are outlawed and 'firemen' burn any that are found. The title comes from the temperature at which paper becomes combustible. There was a 1966 film adaptation of the novel and Bradbury himself developed it into this play in the late 70s. Bradbury has stated that he wrote it to address his concerns about the McCarthy era and the threat of book burning. In later years, he stated it was a commentary on how mass media reduces interest in reading literature. The story is set in an unspecified city at an unspecified time in the future somewhere after the year 1960. (more...)

BWW Review: International Premiere of FUN HOME, Starring Lea Salonga, Eric Kunze
by Vince Vicentuan - Nov 16, 2016

Atlantis Theatrical Entertainment Group's (ATEG) Manila production of the 2015 Tony© Best Musical FUN HOME opens and unravels with no fanfare: a minimalist set, a meager ensemble of ten actors, musical numbers that do not play to spectacular choreography and exploding lights, and a venue so small the performers and spectators are actually within an awkward spitting distance. BWW Recap: SUPERGIRL's Friends are All 'Changing' on this Week's Episode
by Nicole Ackman - Nov 15, 2016

Everyone surrounding Kara -- James, Winn, Alex, Mon-El, and J'onn-- went through a major life change on this week's episode of SUPERGIRL. James and Winn debuted their combined creation of The Guardian, Mon-El dealt with whether he wants to be a hero or not, and J'onn received a threatening blood transfusion. Most poignantly, Alex came out to Kara in a stunning portrayal by Chyler Leigh. Meanwhile, the DEO team battled an alien parasite that proved to be a dangerous match even for Supergirl and the Martian Manhunter. The acting in this episode, especially from Chyler and Jeremy Jordan, was truly some of the best we've seen this season. (more...)

BWW Feature: PARADE Marches In to Douglas Anderson School of the Arts with Lessons to Teach
by Michael Lipp - Nov 14, 2016

Under normal circumstances, it wouldn't be a bad problem to have. During rehearsals for the Douglas Anderson School of the Arts' production of the Jason Robert Brown and Alfred Uhry musical PARADE, director and Theatre Department Co-Chair David Loudermilk realized his student cast would need some hard lessons on embodying the intense negative feelings of prejudice. 'I think it's an interesting balance,' Loudermilk comments. 'With this generation being so open and accepting and understanding of things - especially here at DA - it's hard for the kids to go to the 'other side' of it. They're struggling with getting angry. They just don't know how.' (more...)
