by Jeff Davis - May 26, 2015

The production has several aces up its sleeve, the first being John Logan's script. Logan-the scribe behind the plays Red and I'll Eat You Last, films Gladiator, The Aviator, Sweeney Todd, Hugo, and Skyfall, and the T.V. show Penny Dreadful-is easily one of the greatest contemporary writers in any medium. His gift for creating edge-of-your-seat pacing, engrossing and flawed characters, and witty dialogue shows through in Never the Sinner, Logan's 1985 work and first play. (more...)

by Jeffrey Walker - May 25, 2015

The Lusty Month of May; like the song says: "It's time to do a wicked thing or two!" It's May, the time when spring brings that hot-blooded, four letter word: lust. Musicals have had a steady history of lusty musical numbers. There are songs about rolling in the hay, and others extolling the virtues of different (ahem) flavors of man-candy. Some songs are paens to hot, steamy nights, and some are about what you do on those kind of nights.  (more...)

In 2015, it isn't easy to get people into a theatre. Who wants to make the drive and pay the ticket price for a light, late twentieth-century comedy when the entire series of "Friends" and "Everybody Loves Raymond" is on Netflix? "Social Security," written by Andrew Bergman and currently playing at Derby Dinner Playhouse, is the essence of those sitcoms brought to life. Is it provocative, complex and moving? No. Is it silly, lighthearted and a lot of fun? Absolutely. (more...)

It may be a bit early to call it, having only reached the third of an eight-episode long homestretch, but I'm going to do it: the latter half of OUTLANDER's premiere season has exceeded all of my expectations. I'm not totally sure what they were to begin with, but they've all been tossed out the window by this point anyway. Already this show has topped itself, with each new episode since the September mid-season finale proving to be stronger than the last. Tonight's installment, intriguingly titled 'The Devil's Mark' was--yup, yup, I'm doing it--the best so far. I'm probably going to kick myself next week, if we keep up this momentum, but I'm just too darn excited about it. (more...)
