Museum of the Moving Image to Host Theo Angelopoulos Retrospective in July
by BWW News Desk - Jun 24, 2016

Greece's most prominent film director of the post-1968 era, Theo Angelopoulos (1935–2012) was a master cinema stylist. His investigations into history and politics, tyranny and resistance, and spiritual anomie and emotional devastation place him on equal footing with filmmakers like Andrei Tarkovsky, Bernardo Bertolucci, and Wim Wenders. Today, at a time when Greece has struggled with impending economic collapse, and as the country's refugee crisis has worsened, with displaced populations fleeing war in the Middle East and massing on its borders, the themes of Angelopoulos's cinema are pressing once again. Museum of the Moving Image will present Eternity and History: The Cinema of Theo Angelopoulos, a complete retrospective of the director's career—the first in the United States in 25 years—from July 8 through 24, 2016. The retrospective will also be presented at the Harvard Film Archive in Cambridge, Massachusetts, from July 15 through August 22. The presentation of the retrospective at Museum of the Moving Image was made possible with support from the Stavros Niarchos Foundation and the Hellenic American Chamber of Commerce. (more...)

BWW Review: On Site Opera's FIGARO a Charming Diversion that's Not Mozart
by Richard Sasanow - Jun 20, 2016

“Bride's side or groom's? I'm Count Almaviva,” said the elegant actor as we entered what, we are told, is the Count's summer palace. “Bride's side or groom's?” says the seductive brunette in a bath towel, stepping out of the tub. She introduces herself as the Countess, Rosina. Upstairs, downstairs, in my lady's chamber (and the atrium), we are cordially invited to the world of THE MARRIAGE OF FIGARO--the name of the event as well as the opera--joining the Jack of all trades and the lovely Susanna, compliments of the ever-creative On Site Opera. BWW Blog: Amanda Grillo - The Waiting: Post Audition Anxiety
by Guest Blogger: Amanda Grillo - Jun 13, 2016

Whether it be for a job interview, a sports team try out, or auditions for a show, we've all been kept waiting anxiously for results. "Did I do well enough?" "Did they like it?" "It would have been better if I had done this." Cue "I Hope I Get It" from A Chorus Line. You begin to over analyze the performance you gave. You crave a sense of approval and validation. The audition haunts you until you get that email, phone call, see the physical list posted on a bulletin board, or however the director shares the information. I don't like thinking that things are a "sure thing". If it's my first time auditioning for a group/director or they are a close friend of mine that I've sung for dozens of times, I always make sure to bring my A game and the nerves are still there. How do we deal with post audition anxiety? How do we deal with the waiting? Cue Sutton Foster singing that C# for a near fourteen counts in "I Know It's Today" from Shrek the Musical. (more...)
