BWW Review: THE NOSE, Royal Opera House, 20 October 2016
by Alexandra Coghlan - Oct 21, 2016

Composed when Shostakovich was just 21 years old, fresh from the conservatoire and still high on the success of his First Symphony, The Nose is a piece of musical rebellion - a fantasy of abrasive, rule-breaking joie de vivre whose absurd, anarchic rompings and musical shape-shiftings conceal a political switchblade under their brightly-coloured clothes. This is pantomime, certainly, but adult pantomime. Never before staged at the Royal Opera, the piece now makes a belated debut, and in the hands of Australian director Barrie Kosky it looks scarcely less radical now than it would have done back in 1928. BWW Review: THE GOVERNMENT INSPECTOR, Birmingham Rep Theatre, March 23 2016
by Jenny Ell - Mar 25, 2016

With an original publication date back in 1836, Nikolai Gogol's satirical play The Government Inspector is certainly not new writing. Some 180 years on, the text centring on greed and political anarchy in Russia is still being performed. The storyline has had a wealth of incarnations over the years in film, theatre and TV; including a particularly memorable episode of Fawlty Towers. Ultimately a comedy, the play tells of a town expecting a visit from a Government Inspector and before this happens, the Mayor has to try and tidy up/hide all of his wrong doings towards the discontented local people. When a well-dressed and seemingly charming gentleman Khlestakov arrives, the townsfolk all jump to the conclusion that he is the Inspector. But is he? (more...)

Russian Stage Director Aleksey Burago to Helm AVENUE OF WONDER
by BWW News Desk - Mar 15, 2016

This winter, renowned Russian stage director Aleksey Burago brings to life the dark humor of Nikolai Gogol in Avenue of Wonder. One evening, while strolling along Nevsky Prospekt, the central avenue that remains to this day the main artery of St. Petersburg, a distraught artist and a brazen lieutenant encounter a mysterious prostitute and a young housewife. In their separate pursuits of the women through the labyrinths of side streets, courtyards and winding staircases, both men come to realize all is not what it seems on the glittery avenue. As the rational plane of life slant beneath their feet, these comic and self-deluding characters soon discover that between everything ordinary there is a crack and deep in the shadows, peering up, are the maddening fantasies of the human soul. This February, join the cast of The Russian Arts Theater & Studio at the historic Balcony Theater and experience the strange genius of Nikolai Gogol. (more...)
