'Pro99' Actors' Equity Members Send Open Letter to AEA President'Pro99' Actors' Equity Members Send Open Letter to AEA President
by BWW News Desk - Aug 27, 2015

Members of the "Pro99" movement of Actors' Equity Association have issued an open letter to AEA's newly elected president, Kate Shindle, in response to her victory and to her inaugural address as president of the national union for actors and stage managers. The open letter is signed by over 400 Equity members (listed below), including such notable names as Ed Asner, Francis Fisher, Sally Kirkland and Alfred Molina. The "Pro99" movement formed in late 2014 in opposition to AEA's rollout of a new plan that will effectively force "intimate theaters" in Los Angeles to pay Equity actors minimum wage, go "non-union" or even close - despite an overwhelming vote against the plan by 66% of the Los Angeles membership on an advisory referendum. "Pro99" members around the nation, who take their name from the current AEA "99 Seat Plan" that allows members to volunteer in smaller venues, oppose AEA's new promulgated plan. They are requesting that Equity leadership put a moratorium on the plan until local members' voices can be heard, and that the union work with its members to develop an alternative plan that will more realistically address the needs of the Los Angeles theater community. BWW Review: INDIAN INK from STC and Pratidhwani Blends History and HeartBWW Review: INDIAN INK from STC and Pratidhwani Blends History and Heart
by Jay Irwin - Aug 24, 2015

When you go to see a Tom Stoppard play such as "Indian Ink", currently playing at Center Theatre from Sound Theatre Company and Pratidhwani, you can expect to be immersed in whatever subject Stoppard has chosen, whether that be literature, history, math, music or landscape architecture, along with a fascinating interpersonal story with the characters. And while I usually appreciate the interpersonal stories of his plays, his chosen subject of interest is usually lost on me (mostly due to the feeling that you need to take a Masters class in whatever the subject is before you see the play to totally get it). Stoppard's "Indian Ink" is no exception although the love story at its heart certainly outweighed any gaps of historical knowledge I felt. (more...)

Martin Lawrence Galleries Presents 40th Anniversary GalaMartin Lawrence Galleries Presents 40th Anniversary Gala
by BWW News Desk - Aug 24, 2015

GREENWICH, Conn., Aug. 24, 2015 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) Picasso, Chagall, Warhol, Dali, Haring, Erté and other masters of 20th century art may have never gathered together in the same room when they were alive. But, to the sheer delight of more than 150 collectors from across the United States, their masterpieces were displayed last month at the Martin Lawrence Galleries (MLG) showcase in Las Vegas, Nevada...one of 10 galleries it has across the country. This is the fourth annual event for the nation's leading purveyor of 20th and 21st century art to assemble some of the world's finest masterworks in its spacious 27,000-square-foot gallery located in the Forum Shops at Caesars Palace. The celebration marked MLG's 40th year serving clients and prospects alike, who viewed works alongside those of Francis, Muniz, Kondakova, Hallam, Deyber, Mas, Kostabi, Hofmann, Nichols, Lalonde, Fresinnier, Bertho and many others in a space that can only be described as a cultural wonderland. MLG also used the opportunity to announce its support of St Jude Children's Research Hospital, which is leading the way the world understands, treats and defeats childhood cancer and other life-threatening diseases. As part of the affiliation, MLG made a monetary and in-kind donation to St. Jude that included two pieces of art for a fundraising auction at the St. Jude 'An Affair of the Art' gala next May. 'We are grateful for the support of Martin Lawrence Galleries because unlike any other hospitals, the majority of funding for St. Jude comes from individual contributions,' said Bret Roy of ALSAC/St. Jude Children's Research Hospital. 'Events like this gala help ensure families never receive a bill from St. Jude Children's Research Hospital because all a family should worry about is helping their child live.' 'We are proud of our ability to offer collectors, both veterans and first timers alike, the kind of superb artwork that can decorate their walls and their lives,' said MLG President Eric Dannemann. These are truly assets that can be passed from one generation to the next, so families can enjoy them for years and years.' Dannemann added, 'Holding our annual event has become a highlight of our year, and hopefully of our clients' year as well. And to support St. Jude Children's Research Hospital, a charity that finds cures and saves children's lives, is outreach that makes us proud, knowing we are making a difference.' About Martin Lawrence Galleries Home to the most highly respected artists in the world, Martin Lawrence Galleries has redefined the art scene for clients and prospects of all tastes, with an unparalleled collection of works of art available for acquisition at exceptional value. The galleries are distinguished by works by Philippe Bertho, Erté, Marc Chagall, Robert Deyber, François Fresinnier, Kerry Hallam, Frederick Hart, Keith Haring, Douglas Hofmann, Liudmila Kondakova, René Lalonde, Felix Mas, Takashi Murakami, Pablo Picasso, Rembrandt, Andy Warhol and many others. BWW Review: Iannone Uncovers Edwin Booth's Life at Theater RED's World PremiereBWW Review: Iannone Uncovers Edwin Booth's Life at Theater RED's World Premiere
by Peggy Sue Dunigan - Aug 19, 2015

Milwaukee's TheateRED begins their 2015-2016 season titled 'We All Have Blood On Our Hands,' with a World Premiere written by one of the city's acclaimed actors and directors, Angela Iannone. Iannone constructs a play, The Seed of Banquo, based on the historical facts of American theater great Edwin Booth, and yes, also the brother of the infamous John Wilkes Booth. Edwin Booth opened a theater with his namesake in 1888, and then directed, designed and starred in the plays he choose to produce. In Iannone's The Seeds of Banquo, his historical and personal stage design, prompt book and blocking were used to recreate Booth's original production, including the stage back drop, while she intermingles Booth's personal life to the point where lines in Shakespeare's Macbeth might easily be quoted by the individual Booth regarding his own relections.
