Joel Drake Johnson's dark comedy Rasheeda Speaking tells the story of a successful white physician (Eric Slater) who attempts to oust his black receptionist (Ora Jones) by enlisting her white female co-worker (Tara Mallen) as a spy. Tensions rise as relations between the two women quickly deteriorate, turning their once cordial workplace into a battlefield of innuendo, paranoia and passive aggression. Using his trademark wit and detailed observation, Johnson mines the subtleties of “post racial” America to explore what we are really saying when we refuse to talk about race. (more...)

BWW Dance Review: THE MUSIC MAN Brings Fun to Cottonwood Heights
by Melissa Hurst - Jan 1, 2001

As with any show with a large cast, it can be difficult for a choreographer to know what to do with all those bodies. And Cottonwood Heights production of MEREDITH WILLSON'S THE MUSIC MAN is no exception. Working with a cast of at least 75 that included small children, Choreographer Teresa Draper and Assistant Choreographer Heather Francis used the stage effectively and kept the choreography simple and fun. According to her biography, this is Ms. Draper's third production of THE MUSIC MAN, and her love of the story comes out in her choreography. Sadly, dancing was kept to a minimal in this production, even cutting out a possibly long dance sequence in “76 Trombones.” And understandable so, given the size of the cast. The first big choreographed number did not occur until “Marian the Librarian,” where the choreography team finally took advantage of the dance talent in the cast. The dance sequence was fun and entertaining to watch, and the performers all seemed to be thoroughly enjoying themselves. My favorite moment in the entire show was when Eulalie Mackecknie Shinn (Celeste Porter) leads the ladies of River City in “Grecian Urns.” Porter's comic timing is perfect and all the ladies really commit to the comedy of the moment. All in all, Cottonwood Heights Arts Council's production is entertaining and fun, even if the dancing is light, it is still enjoyable to watch and it is appropriate for the entire family. The show has been extended until August 3rd, so get your tickets today and go support local theater! (more...)

Magnificat Publishes IN HIM ALONE IS OUR HOPE by Pope Francis
by BWW News Desk - Jan 1, 2001

MAGNIFICAT, publisher of the monthly Catholic worship aid, announces the release of its latest book, In Him Alone is Our Hope, written by then-Cardinal Jorge Mario Bergoglio. The text is a retreat the future pope gave to the bishops of Spain during Holy Week of 2006. Pope Francis, in the manner of St. Ignatius of Loyola's Spiritual Exercises, leads his brother bishops in a meditation on their vocation. He calls them to renew their understanding of what it means to serve in humble strength in a world obsessed with possessions and power. (more...)
