BWW Review: Talented Cast Shows there Is More than Science to Mad Cow's PHOTOGRAPH 51BWW Review: Talented Cast Shows there Is More than Science to Mad Cow's PHOTOGRAPH 51
by Matt Tamanini - Feb 26, 2015

In the last two years, Orlando's Mad Cow Theatre has assumed the mantle as one of the Southeast's leaders in producing 'Science Plays.' In addition to their Second Annual Science Play Festival, which begins Friday, February 27th, the Church Street theatre recently premiered Anna Ziegler's affecting play PHOTOGRAPH 51, about the race to discover the structure of DNA. On first blush, such a technical topic doesn't seem like the most obvious choice for a compelling drama, but what Ziegler and director Denise Gillman obviously understand is that a good play, no matter its subject, is best when focused on human relationships and emotions. PHOTOGRAPH 51, which seems as if it was written for Mad Cow's intimate Zehngebot-Stonerock Theatre, provides plenty of science, but truly excels when the actors pull back the layers on their characters' intricacies. BWW Reviews: GIRL ON THE EDGE Is A Poignant Tribute to the Power of Caring and the Possibility of RedemptionBWW Reviews: GIRL ON THE EDGE Is A Poignant Tribute to the Power of Caring and the Possibility of Redemption
by Herbert Paine - Feb 23, 2015

The line between hope and despair is thread-thin. For an adolescent girl, tumbling in a tailspin of woes, the pathway to salvation may be as seemingly simple but as frustratingly elusive as parental patience and caring, a strategic retreat to a place called Maheo, peer support, and maybe even a horse named Betsy Moo. It may take a village to save a kid, but ultimately the kid needs to choose life. Girl on the Edge, directed by Jay Silverman and making its world debut at the Sedona International Film Festival on February 28th, tells the story of 15-year old Hannah Green, brilliantly portrayed by Taylor Spreitler, and her journey from victimhood to self-discovery. Washington National Opera Presents THE FLYING DUTCHMAN Revival at the Kennedy Center Opera House, 3/7Washington National Opera Presents THE FLYING DUTCHMAN Revival at the Kennedy Center Opera House, 3/7
by BWW News Desk - Feb 19, 2015

Washington National Opera (WNO) continues its 2014-2015 season with a revival of Richard Wagner's mythical tale of love and redemption on the high seas—The Flying Dutchman, March 7-21 in the Kennedy Center Opera House. This production is the conclusion of WNO's recent look at Wagner's work in anticipation of the company's first complete presentation of the composer's epic four-part Ring cycle next season. Starring American bassbaritone Eric Owens in his staged role debut as The Dutchman, Wagner's powerful early opera is directed by Stephen Lawless and features the WNO Orchestra conducted by WNO Music Director Philippe Auguin and Eric Weimer. Condemned to wander the seas upon a ship of ghosts, The Dutchman can only venture ashore once every seven years to seek his salvation: a woman's unconditional love. When Senta, the beguiling daughter of the sea captain Daland, pledges to be faithful to him forever, it seems the ancient curse might finally be broken. But Erik, her jealous huntsman suitor, poses just one of many obstacles in a tale where greed, fidelity, and misfortune collide in full force. Director Stephen Lawless tells the Dutchman's story with theatrical flair, including a stunning ship of blood-red sails that places the opera's dramatic action in bold relief. The opera is famous for its tempestuous overture, Senta's passionate ballad, and its riveting final scene set atop a stormbattered bluff. (more...)
