Exclusive InDepth InterView: William Goldman & Will Frears Discuss MISERY Onstage - Is Broadway Next?
by Pat Cerasaro - Nov 26, 2012

One of the most terrifying and tremendous thrillers of the 1990s, Rob Reiner's film adaptation of Stephen King's bestselling semi-roman a clef novelistic ode to psychotic fans, MISERY, has always seemed somehow destined for the stage, and, now, thanks to two-time Academy Award-winning screenwriter William Goldman, responsible for the original film's screenplay as well as many films, books, plays and musicals of his own, and director Will Frears, the nightmare is coming all too harrowingly, hobbling-ly real, live onstage at the Bucks County Playhouse for a special limited engagement November 24 through December 8. In this detailed discussion, Goldman, Frears and I dissect the finer points of the characters, story, themes and narrative ideas that flow through the original King novel and the Reiner film as well as outline what the new stage adaptation sets out to do insofar as intensifying, clarifying and maximizing the terrific potential inherent to the dynamic and compelling material. Plus, Goldman offers his erudite insight into the creation of the original screenplay and his feelings on King's work in general, as well as offers his characteristic wit in detailing his past theatrical endeavors thus far - including a Broadway musical with John Kander, A FAMILY AFFAIR, as well as the never-filmed original film musical written in collaboration with Stephen Sondheim, SINGING OUT LOUD. Additionally, Frears gives us an update on his latest film project, a film centered on two friends in the 1960s. All of that, the most thorough analysis of Annie Wilkes outside of an insane asylum (or horror fan club, perhaps) and much, much more! (more...)

BWW Review: Night And Day! Michael Feinstein Brings Style and Sophistication To THE SINATRA PROJECT at The McCallum Theatre
by David Green - Mar 4, 2013

Michael Feinstein's SINATRA PROJECT at The McCallum Theatre was 'Night And Day' above the theatrical offering I had seen the night before. (See my review of 'Prince Poppycock and Frenchie Davis' if you want to know what I am talking about). It was everything a concert should be and he was everything a showman should be - slick, stylish and produced to perfection. Feinstein payed tribute to 'the greatest singer of the 20th century, and beyond', backed by a seventeen-piece big band, and wowed the sold out crowd with tune after tune and tale after tale. He was born to sing this music and the notes and lyrics fall from his lips as if they were written just for him to sing. It may have been an homage to Sinatra, but even as he paid tribute to one of his greatest influences and role models he made the music his own and left everyone wanting more - MORE FEINSTEIN! BWW Reviews: Kritzerland at Sterling's Upstairs at The Federal Salutes Songwriter Dorothy Fields
by Shari Barrett - Jun 2, 2014

The 46th Kritzerland show on Sunday, June 1 featured one of the most influential female lyricists of all time, the great Dorothy Fields. In a time when Tin Pan Alley was almost exclusively a male-dominated club, Dorothy Fields rose to the top, first writing hit after hit with Jimmy McHugh, and later becoming one of the first female lyricists on Broadway and in film. Fields created some of the cleverest and most beautiful lyrics ever written, and was a master of the craft who forged the way for so many other talented female lyricists. There was no one like Dorothy Fields. (more...)

InDepth InterView: Frank Vincent on CHICAGO OVERCOAT & More
by Pat Cerasaro - Apr 17, 2011

Appearing in all three of Martin Scorsese's masterpieces - RAGING BULL, GOODFELLAS and CASINO - would surely suffice, at least for the artistic quotient of any resume, yet the suave and commanding presence of Frank Vincent as Tony Soprano's arch-nemesis Phil Leotardo on HBO's THE SOPRANOS may very well be his most beloved role to date. Yet, how to even choose? In addition to those four simply masterful entities, Mr. Vincent has also appeared in films for a wide array of highly notable directors, including: Spike Lee on DO THE RIGHT THING and JUNGLE FEVER; Brian DePalma on WISE GUYS; James Mangold on COP LAND; and the recently deceased Sidney Lumet on the 1996 crime thriller NIGHT FALLS ON MANHATTAN. In addition to a thorough discussion of his past roles, new and old - plus, what it was like to act as acting coach to Nas, Method Man and DMX on Hype Williams's BELLY - we also get down to brass nuts and bolts about his riveting new crime thriller CHICAGO OVERCOAT, available this week. In OVERCOAT, Mr. Vincent portrays perhaps his most rich and complex character to date and his powerful performance is something to cherish, cheer - and, surely, cower at; in fear. After all, who does badass boss better than Mr. Vincent? As it turns out, he's also a hell of a nice guy, to boot! Now, to quote Billy Batts in GOODFELLAS, 'Go home and get your shine box!' but, first enjoy his colorful comments! (more...)
