BWW Reviews: LAUREN STANFORD Attempts Channeling the Legendary Helen Morgan at 54 BelowBWW Reviews: LAUREN STANFORD Attempts Channeling the Legendary Helen Morgan at 54 Below
by Alix Cohen - Mar 22, 2015

Lauren Stanford (who won the MetroStar Singing Competition at the Metropolitan Room in 2013) has convincingly done herself up to look like the legendary Helen Morgan in her new show, More Than You Know, which she introduced at the Laurie Beechman Theatre in late October and brought to 54 Below this past Friday night. Stanford's presentation is 2/3 singing and 1/3 biography. Research is evident; specific adds color. The use of framed photographs and several conjectured telephone calls is effective (the actress listens). Vocals don't emulate Morgan's controlled vibrato, but Stanford has sufficient musical feel for the period to make mimicry unnecessary. Her uneven contralto can add feeling to a song rather than diminishing it. There are, however, other issues. (more...)

Hey Idiots!! So, I have to start off with this past weekend… in short, it was BADASS. In the middle of our rehearsal schedule our entire cast (including our director and one of our producers!) got to do an "American Idiot" night at the Viper Room and we rocked it, if I do say so myself! We did songs from the show, as well as our own covers and originals. The place was packed and the energy was palpable with every one singing out some great songs from Green Day. We definitely made fans that will be coming to see the show when we open. Yay! It was also so cool to see every one of these amazing cast members go on stage, do their thing and kill it. Did I mention it happened to be the same day that Green Day was inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame? F**king perfect.  (more...)

Although this forest is filled with wonderful creatures of all shapes and sizes, the 'women of the woods' at The Firehouse Theatre bring both the heart and humor to this intimate production, now playing through May 3rd, 2015. BWW Reviews: STAGEright's Minimalist INTO THE WOODS Alive with CharacterBWW Reviews: STAGEright's Minimalist INTO THE WOODS Alive with Character
by Jay Irwin - Apr 13, 2015

All too often in musical theater the performers have pretty voices but do the standard "park and bark" and just belt out those tunes with no character or story behind it. Such is not the case with the 12 person ensemble of STAGEright's current production of "Into the Woods" who not only sang the Sondheim score beautifully but also managed a ton of both comedic and dramatic timing to actually convey their characters (many of whom had multiple characters) making this one of the best productions I've seen. BWW Reviews: Park Square Theatre is Currently Presenting Two Small Gems on its Two Stages - SHOOTING STAR and THE OTHER PLACEBWW Reviews: Park Square Theatre is Currently Presenting Two Small Gems on its Two Stages - SHOOTING STAR and THE OTHER PLACE
by Jill Schafer - Apr 13, 2015

I don't know if you've noticed, but there's something exciting going on in downtown St. Paul. In what's usually regarded as the sleepier of the Twin Cities, Park Square Theatre has recently opened a second stage in the Historic Hamm Building on lovely 7th Place. This extra space has allowed them to do some great things in the last few months, including producing regional premieres, partnering with local theater companies (look for shows by Sandbox Theatre, Theatre Pro Rata, and Girl Friday Productions this spring and summer), an increased focus on diversity, and continuing their commitment to students. They currently have three fantastic shows playing on the two stages, including student matinees of an effectively condensed ROMEO AND JULIET. But for us grown-ups, the two stages offer two very different but both excellent choices: the bittersweet comedy SHOOTING STAR on the Proscenium Stage, and the emotional drama THE OTHER PLACE on the new Boss Stage. Read on to make your choice, but hurry, both shows close on April 19. (more...)

BWW Review: INTO THE WOODS Bluray, DVD Offer Behind the Scenes MagicBWW Review: INTO THE WOODS Bluray, DVD Offer Behind the Scenes Magic
by Matt Tamanini - Apr 1, 2015

Though the magic of the woods is not as spectacular on a TV as it was on the big screen, the vast majority of INTO THE WOODS' enchantment admirably makes the transition to the small screen. Last Christmas, Stephen Sondheim and James Lapine's beloved Broadway fairy tale took the big screen by storm with a star-studded movie adaptation, and last week Disney released DVD and Blu-Ray versions full of bonus features. Despite all of the extras on the disks, INTO THE WOODS' main draw is still its incredible stars. With a cast of Hollywood A-listers and Broadway alums, all of whom prove more than capable of handling Stephen Sondheim's uniquely intricate and intellectual music and lyrics, this very well might be the most effectively adapted movie musical of the past half century. The lush orchestrations, the gorgeous settings, and the spectacular cast are just as bewitching as they were in the movie theatre. (more...)
