by Richard Sasanow - Jul 18, 2014

It's easy for opera-lovers to complain about the homogenization of casting at the world's great houses—particularly when there's only a small handful of Annas, Jonases, Juan Diegos, Cecilias, etc., that everybody wants to hear. So it was a treat to hear the visiting Bolshoi's concert performance of Rimsky-Korsakov's THE TSAR'S BRIDE last weekend at Lincoln Center Festival—filled with wonderful solo voices almost completely unknown to New York audiences, along with the stalwart Bolshoi chorus (under Valery Borisov). BWW Reviews: GHOST THE MUSICAL Haunts the O.C.
by Michael L. Quintos - Aug 9, 2014

On the surface, GHOST, the ultra-romantic 1990 Oscar-nominated box office hit, seems every bit the perfect motion picture to be repurposed into a flashy stage musical. Unfortunately, the musical that eventually emerged (now playing at the Segerstrom Center for the Arts through August 10) is a chaotic, schizophrenic melange of random adult contemporary pop rock songs intermixed with an amped-up mystical mystery where the swoon-worthy aspects of the original gets diluted in favor of dazzling effects and abstract dance numbers. Why water down the romance? (more...)

Emma James is on a mission to rebuild her life after the loss of her husband. When he discovers handwritten notes made by her late husband, he learns some friends can't be trusted. They will stop at nothing to get what they want, including putting Emma's life in danger. About the author: As a child, she entertained herself for hours playing pretend, but not with dolls and such. She created stories and pictured them in her mind, sometimes even acted them out. Her well preserved secret until now. Not being a literary enthusiast, she never thought her childhood pastime would lead in this direction. In life, one door closes and another opens, so she was told. This was true for her. She lost her mother, her best friend, to cancer. After a year without her, she picked up her mother's favorite hobby... reading. After one book, a romantic suspense, she was hooked. In the past, she'd fall asleep after a few minutes of reading. Now, books rank up there with a good red wine. It didn't take long for her childhood muse to come back in adult version urging her to put the scenes in her head on paper. Cait's debut novel, 'Kidnapped Hearts,' won awards in the categories of Best Happily Ever After and Best Suspense. (more...)
