Carpenter's humorous tall tales and personal short stories about marriage will prepare you for the better, the worse, and the inevitably crazy times you and your spouse might experience along the way to happily-ever-after. With advice and exercises such as: A Starter Recipe for a Happy and Lasting Marriage; The Collective Bargaining Process for Household Chores; and The Parental Time-Sharing Plan for Married, Adult Children, you and your loved one can learn to compromise and live in harmony. BWW Reviews: Variations on a Theme - Three Musicals, THE COLOR PURPLE, CALVIN BERGER, and LA CAGE AUX FOLLES, All Speak to Beauty and Self-WorthBWW Reviews: Variations on a Theme - Three Musicals, THE COLOR PURPLE, CALVIN BERGER, and LA CAGE AUX FOLLES, All Speak to Beauty and Self-Worth
by Jill Schafer - Jan 27, 2015

At first glance, the musicals THE COLOR PURPLE, CALVIN BERGER, and LA CAGE AUX FOLLES may not seem to have much in common. The settings couldn't be more different - the rural South in the early 20th century, a modern day high school, and a drag club in 1970s France. But since I happened to see them all on the same weekend, I couldn't help but draw parallels between them. All three musicals all speak to themes of beauty, identity, self-worth, and having the courage to be who you really are, despite what the world is telling you. In THE COLOR PURPLE, a young, poor, black woman is told that she's ugly and worthless, but after a lifelong journey she arrives at a place of strength and self-love. CALVIN BERGER sets the classic play Cyrano de Bergerac in a modern high school, where a young man feels that his large nose prevents him from getting what he wants in life and chooses to hide behind the handsome popular guy, both of whom eventually learn it's better to be loved for who you are. Finally, in LA CAGE AUX FOLLES, a middle aged man who feels more comfortable dressed as a woman is asked by his own son to hide who he is, but confidently declares 'I am who I am!' Another thing these three musicals have in common is that they can all currently be seen on Twin Cities stages featuring talented local casts. Read on for more details on each, pick one that suits your fancy, and go see a local musical that just may inspire you to love you you really are! (more...)

BWW Reviews: Lovely Production of RODGERS + HAMMERSTEIN'S CINDERELLA at the Fabulous FoxBWW Reviews: Lovely Production of RODGERS + HAMMERSTEIN'S CINDERELLA at the Fabulous Fox
by Chris Gibson - Jan 26, 2015

A fairytale is brought to its full fruition on the stage of the Fabulous Fox Theatre with their current presentation of RODGERS + HAMMERSTEIN'S CINDERELLA. It's a lovely experience that makes the most of the large stage, filling it with songs and beautiful surroundings fit such a lavishly told tale. Originally conceived and broadcast as a musical for television during the late 1950's and starring Julie Andrews in the title role, this work has been altered many times over the years with musical numbers added and subtracted, and the plot rejiggered as well (book by Douglas Carter Beane) to make it have a more political bent, at least where Cinderella's feelings toward how the kingdom is being are concerned. But, here we have a production that's suitable for children of all ages. In other words, perfect family entertainment. (more...)

BWW Recap: GIRLS Takes on an Iowa Revolution?BWW Recap: GIRLS Takes on an Iowa Revolution?
by Samantha Reichstein - Jan 18, 2015

Shots of green lawns, school bells, Hannah counting her steps... is the OCD back? No, she is amazed at the size of her apartment in Iowa! The move is finished, and Hannah Horvath is officially enrolled in the graduate program, living in the land of greenery, bike rides, and over sized apartments (or normal sized, if you aren't coming from New York). Feeling as if she has finally made the right choice in her life, (even eating grapes as a snack), she raves to Marnie of new-found life in Iowa, exclaiming everyone should move over and they can start the Iowa Revolution. However, talking to Marnie opens a door Hannah has clearly been ignoring: Adam. The conversation masks any information about him whatsoever, only a compromise that if he were to end up in the hospital, Hannah would be informed. (more...)

Beans, Capes, Princes & Slippers - Uncovering the Fairy Tales of INTO THE WOODS!Beans, Capes, Princes & Slippers - Uncovering the Fairy Tales of INTO THE WOODS!
by BWW Special Coverage - Dec 21, 2014

Since opening on Broadway in 1987, Stephen Sondheim's Into the Woods has become a musical theatre staple, having been performed in venues big and small all over the world. Based on some of the most enduring fairytales ever told, Into the Woods gives a musical voice to such beloved characters as Cinderella, Little Red Riding Hood, Jack, and countless others, intertwining their stories into one theatrical masterpiece. Though much of the musical is based on the stories that we heard at bedtime, many of the tales have been altered [spoiler alert!] to create a cohesive plot. In anticipation of Disney's upcoming big screen version of the musical, which hits theatres on Christmas day, BroadwayWorld is traveling back to 'Once Upon a Time' to take a closer look at the original fairy tale characters, and how some of their fates differ in Into the Woods! by Alan Henry - Dec 19, 2014

It's no surprise Walt Disney Pictures has decided to bank on the popularity of the movie musical following the box office success of Les Miserables - what is a surprise is how successfully they've done so. Their first foray into the live-action movie musical, Into the Woods is everything you'd want from a movie musical - but doesn't compromise any of the brilliance of the original even if some modifications were made to fit the medium. BWW Review: INTO THE WOODS Is a Wish Come True for Fans of Both Theatre and FilmBWW Review: INTO THE WOODS Is a Wish Come True for Fans of Both Theatre and Film
by Matt Tamanini - Dec 19, 2014

For many musical theatre fans, a beloved Broadway musical, fairly faithfully, adapted into a stunning big screen success, is their most treasured of Christmas wishes. In recent years, however, the holidays have brought us near misses (LES MISERABLES), underwhelming disappointments (RENT), and outright abominations (NINE). However, Disney's INTO THE WOODS, opening nationwide on Christmas Day, is those musical theatre fans' wish fulfilled. With a cast of Hollywood A-listers and Broadway alums, all of whom prove more than capable of handling Stephen Sondheim's uniquely intricate and intellectual music and lyrics, this very well might be the most effectively adapted movie musical of the past half century. The lush orchestrations, the gorgeous settings, and the spectacular cast had a smile plastered on my face from the film's first note until its last. (more...)
