by Pat Cerasaro - Oct 18, 2012

Today we are talking to one of Broadway's biggest homegrown stars who has appeared in the original New York productions of many memorable modern-day classics, among them THE WHO'S TOMMY, AIDA, THE LAST FIVE YEARS and DIRTY ROTTEN SCOUNDRELS, in additions to highly-regarded turns in the first replacement cast of RENT, the Tommy Tune/Jeff Calhoun revival of GREASE, the Off-Broadway curiosity DEBBIE DOES DALLAS, the first (and only) LA mounting of Randy Newman's FAUST, as well as her starring role in the recent Lincoln Center Theater's production of WOMEN ON THE VERGE OF A NERVOUS BREAKDOWN, and, of course, her own rapturously-received, award-winning solo showpiece, EVERYDAY RAPTURE - the convivially mesmerizing, one-of-a-kind Sherie Rene Scott. Discussing the major transitions in her life, including her transformation from ingenue to leading lady to solo performer, Scott illustrates a unique and varied career as well as opens up about the themes, songs, stories, experiences and encounters that formed the basis for her new solo piece premiering at 54 Below this week, PIECE OF MEAT. Additionally, Scott touches upon her work as the co-owner of the revolutionary Sh-K-Boom Records with her husband, Kurt Deutsch, as well as her own album work over the years, in addition to stories related to the recording of many of their most celebrated titles and the composers whose work is prominently featured on their releases - Tom Kitt, Lin-Manuel Miranda, Michael John LaChiusa and many more included. All of that, plus Mennonites, music and meat - and much, much more! (more...)

FLASH SPECIAL: ONE NIGHT STAND Gets On Its Feet, Featuring Four Familiar FacesFLASH SPECIAL: ONE NIGHT STAND Gets On Its Feet, Featuring Four Familiar Faces
by Pat Cerasaro - Jan 30, 2013

Today we are highlighting a riveting documentary tracing the creation of a handful of original musicals, from collaborators meeting for the first time through to conception, creation, execution and actual onstage enacting before a live, paying audience, featuring a seriously talented assortment of Broadway and Hollywood stars. From behind-the-scenes creatives involved - like A CHRISTMAS STORY composers Benj Pasek & Justin Paul as well as recent InDepth InterView participant Lance Horne - to Broadway and West End onstage talent such as Cheyenne Jackson, Mandy Gonzalez, Jesse Tyler Ferguson, Roger Bart, Richard Kind, Rachel Dratch, Summer Strallen, Tamara Tunie, Michael Longoria and many more, ONE NIGHT STAND offers a rare glimpse into a world many of may be fascinated or intrigued by, but which little light has ever been shone - that is, until now. Tracing the creation of four musicals from the ground up over such a short, intense period of time, especially with all of the accompanying exhilaration, exhaustion and excitement generated by and experienced by those involved once the shows are up on their feat mere hours later - whether they are really ready to be or not - is a uniquely compelling conceit upon which to center a film and ONE NIGHT STAND is a truly tremendous accomplishment. We are taken right inside the mind of the music makers, into the hearts of the stories and characters and into the minds of the actors playing the roles as they all strive to make magic happen under deadline, which is certainly no easy feat in any field, let alone perhaps the most difficult to craft of all the creative arts, musical theatre. ONE NIGHT STAND stands on its own as a thoroughly engaging and ultimately richly rewarding viewing experience for fans of theatre, as well as anyone interested in watching unbelievably talented craftsman create instant art before our very eyes, while the triple-threat talents employed to enact and act it do so almost effortlessly. by Pat Cerasaro - Jan 29, 2013

Today we are talking to a phenomenally talented performer who has starred in a string of contemporary musicals, ranging from replacement gigs in the Broadway productions of Elton John & Tim Rice's AIDA and Stephen Schwartz's WICKED to creating lead roles in Jim Steinman's DANCE OF THE VAMPIRES and Lin-Manuel Miranda's IN THE HEIGHTS, in addition to her memorable contributions to the Laura Nyro revue, Eli's Comin', Off-Broadway - the one and only Mandy Gonzalez. Discussing her time spent in many of the aforementioned shows as well as her experiences inhabiting the wildly different characters within each, Gonzalez shares her infectious enthusiasm for performance and her appreciation for having participated in such landmark shows. Most importantly, Gonzalez shares stories from the heated rehearsal rooms backstage at the 24-Hour Musicals celebration and what participating in the event that would form the basis for ONE NIGHT STAND, a documentary film being released in select cities this Wednesday, January 30. Additionally, Gonzalez reflects on her new role as a mom, as well as roles she would enjoy pursuing in the future, onstage and off, as well as her own favorite shows and scores. InDepth InterView Exclusive: Patti LuPone Talks FAR AWAY PLACES, 54 Below, PARKER, Broadway, Hollywood & MoreInDepth InterView Exclusive: Patti LuPone Talks FAR AWAY PLACES, 54 Below, PARKER, Broadway, Hollywood & More
by Pat Cerasaro - Feb 7, 2013

Once in a generation, if we are lucky, an extraordinary talent like no other arises - one who can ceaselessly, effortlessly caress the loftiest heights of comedy and drama onstage (and sometimes onscreen), while, simultaneously, imbuing musical theatre roles with the same skill set, plus a powerhouse, quintessentially unique and resplendent vocal instrument; and, of course, that indescribable 'it' factor, too - such is the tale of Broadway's grand dame, Patti LuPone. Ms. LuPone is a part of that great pantheon of leading ladies of lore led by Ethel Merman, Mary Martin, Angela Lansbury, Elaine Stritch and Bernadette Peters - that is, musical theatre royalty. Taking a look back at many moments in her long and varied career thus far, LuPone candidly opines about a vast array of topics and opens up about many of the remarkable figures who have played roles in her astounding time spent on Broadway, in Hollywood and on TV - among them: Stephen Sondheim, Hal Prince, Andrew Lloyd Webber, Marc Shaiman & Scott Wittman, Steven Spielberg, David Mamet, Ryan Murphy and many more. Most importantly, LuPone discusses various aspects of her ever-expanding new solo show upon which her sensational live album, FAR AWAY PLACES, is based - the songs, the stories, the themes, the collaborators and her future plans for the piece (such as her series of 54 Below shows coming up in February). Additionally, LuPone addresses appearing on GLEE, reflects on working with Jennifer Lopez and Jason Statham on PARKER, shares her thoughts on her favorite films of the year, expounds upon what roles she would like to pursue and teases about her concert with David Yazbek and the debut of her new Carnegie Hall concert as well as a return to London where she made her mark with her Olivier-winning original Fantine in LES MISERABLES - all of that and much, much more!
