InDepth InterView: Lea Michele Confirms FUNNY GIRL Revival! Plus, Talks New Solo Album LOUDER, GLEE S5, LEGENDS OF OZ: DOROTHY'S RETURN, WICKED & More
by Pat Cerasaro - Mar 4, 2014

Today we are particularly thrilled to present a wide-ranging conversation with one of the most attention-grabbing and notable Broadway/Hollywood crossover stars of the new millennium all about her theatre past, GLEE present and potentially spectacular future - the charismatic and committed Lea Michele. Sparing some precious moments while promoting her new solo album release, LOUDER, Michele comments on not only her studio work and the current season of her FOX hit musical dramedy series but also sheds some light on much more, including sharing first news of the new stage revival of FUNNY GIRL currently in planning stages following the rights being purchased by GLEE creator and mastermind Ryan Murphy, set to mirror the Season Five storyline of GLEE itself as it presents the spectacular theatrics, unforgettable songs and backstage backstabbing involved with the FUNNY GIRL revival starring Rachel Berry (aka Michele). Additionally, Michele analyzes some of her favorite tracks on LOUDER and offers a glimpse into the creative process in creating some of the album's standout tracks such as 'Cue The Rain' and 'The Bells'. Plus, Michele opens up about her role alongside fellow Broadway heavyweights Megan Hilty and Bernadette Peters in the hotly anticipated new animated movie musical LEGENDS OF OZ: DOROTHY'S RETURN and clues us in on what we can expect from the multimedia extravaganza. Furthermore, Michele previews some upcoming GLEE showstoppers-to-be including two songs penned by Stephen Sondheim - 'No One Is Alone' from INTO THE WOODS and 'Not While I'm Around' from SWEENEY TODD - as well as the re-teaming with SPRING AWAKENING star Skylar Astin, while also offering the 411 on the show's big new move to a primary NYC focus. All of that, thoughts on GLEE co-star Idina Menzel's FROZEN performance on this week's Academy Awards telecast, opinions on a new LES MISERABLES revival, a look ahead to her upcoming autobiography BRUNETTE AMBITION and much, much more! BWW Reviews: WICKED at Tennessee Performing Arts Center
by Cara Richardson - Mar 31, 2014

While some may think this could be a boring musical for children, trust me when I say that it is far from that. While this is a show that children will enjoy, Wicked delves much deeper into human nature than most "children's" shows. Wicked gives a hard look at how the choices we make define our lives, and how difficult it can be to be different and to stand for what you believe in. (more...)

SOUND OFF: GLEE 100! The Original Ten Return
by Pat Cerasaro - Mar 19, 2014

The Beatles once sang, 'You say goodbye / I say hello,' and so it goes with the gang on FOX's hit musical dramedy GLEE - new beginnings; new endings; and, well, New Directions, too. GLEE's '100' episode reunited the original crew - minus, of course, the tragically deceased Cory Monteith, who played headlining football hero Finn and who was paid elegant tribute with grace and class both last week and this week in his absence - with the addition of the new gleeks added in the ensuing seasons. While many of the new stars never managed to capture the lighting in a bottle that the originals commanded, it is undeniable that they each provided their own special spice in the GLEE stew and a handful broke out to considerable prominence on Broadway and beyond, particularly in the case of Darren Criss aka Blaine. Nonetheless, what made us all fall in love with GLEE in the first place, lo, more than five seasons ago, was that original recipe - and it's still as savory, spicy, sweet and mouth-watering as ever, as last night's spectacular celebratory entry showcased in spades; and hearts, too. But, yet, we are forced to ask: is this the end or the beginning? (more...)

Glee-Cap: 100!
by Robert Lawlor - Mar 18, 2014

How does one measure a hundred episodes of Glee? In group numbers, in Blaine's hair gel, in Fondue for Two, in diva-offs, in mash-ups, and oh so much more. Tonight marks the 100th episode of Glee and with some familiar faces and some remixed Glee classics - this episode is sure to mark the next dynasty in Glee. Here's to the New Directions old and new, and to Glee! Mercedes and Rachel return to McKinley to say goodbye to the legacy of glee club, and each is acting like the diva they are - apparently nothing has changed. Will is set to celebrate 100 lessons of glee club with remixed classics from the past, and what better way to that then with some help from April Rhodes (Kristin Chenoweth). April is up to her usual boozy ways, and what better way to raise a glass to New Directions than with a little 'Raise Your Glass', which Blaine is quick to point out was in fact a Warblers number, but what would a New Direction be without a good Warbler? (more...)

BWW Reviews: WICKED Flies High in Austin Due to Outstanding Supporting Cast
by Jeff Davis - Feb 26, 2014

Wicked certainly has an interesting reputation among theatergoers. Some theater fanatics love the show. Others hate it. I've always found myself somewhere in the middle. Wicked certainly has both flaws and merits, but to those who only see its flaws, I have this observation to share. Of all the long running shows currently on Broadway, there are only three that feature more than one female lead. Of those three shows, only one involves female leads who aren't merry murderesses and aren't singing ABBA tunes. So kudos to Wicked, and kudos to the touring production currently in Austin for making it easier to see the shows merits and more difficult to see the show's flaws. (more...)

by Emma Cambey - Apr 13, 2014

"A life lived in fear is a life half lived" or so say the characters of Strictly Ballroom in both the musical and the 1992 original film. Anyone who has ever seen anything created by Baz Luhrmann would agree that Baz never does anything by halves and he is certainly fearless. To take one of your most popular and iconic films and turn it into a stage musical requires courage and a whole lot of confidence and creativity, none of which Baz Luhrmann lacks. The resulting musical, which opened Saturday night, is one that will please and entertain fans of the iconic film and will also create a new generation of fans of the story in its new form.
