BWW Blog: Sebastian Trevino - Revivals
by Guest Blogger: Sebastian Trevino - Jan 9, 2017

Revivals can be a tricky subject. People fall in love with the details that make up a show without realizing it. I mean, how can Elphaba's grandiose Defying Gravity first act ending ever be done differently? What about Phantom's epic chandelier drop, how can that be altered? Yes, we tend to cherish certain elements from a show and at times even consider them to be irreplaceable. I, like some of you, am one of those theatre fans. So yeah, I'll admit, I was a bit worried when I found out Mexico's Rent Revival was going to have a completely new take on this modern musical classic.  (more...)

BWW Interview: Ian Gray - Front and Center
by Jeanmarie Simpson - Jan 30, 2017

My favorite experience was playing the part of Young Cain in The Children of Eden. I loved being with all of the college students. They were so talented and taught me a lot. TheatreWorks Silicon Valley continues its 2016/2017 season with a musical saga of immigrant America, Rags. From the creators of Fiddler on the Roof and Wicked, this exhilarating musical follows the journey of Jewish immigrants Rebecca and her son David, who find themselves navigating the teeming, turn-of-the-century tenements of New York. A soaring, tuneful score (music by Charles Strouse, lyrics by Stephen Schwartz) illuminates this sweeping saga (book by Joseph Stein) of dreams and disillusions, love lost and inspiration found, and the heart and soul of the American character. It was declared "A winner, warm and witty. You are tempted to rise cheering," by The Mercury News. Rags will be directed by TheatreWorks Founding Artistic Director Robert Kelley, who notes "this production could not be timelier. As America debates immigration policies, what better time to present this deeper look at the newcomer's experience." Performances are April 5-30 (press opening: April 8) at Mountain View Center for the Performing Arts, 500 Castro Street, Mountain View. For tickets ($35-$86) and more information the public may visit TheatreWorks.orgor call (650) 463-1960. (more...)

BWW Blog: Sydney Gross - My BroadwayCon Experience
by Guest Blogger: Sydney Gross - Apr 4, 2017

It has been practically two months now and I am still suffering from Post BroadwayCon depression. For those who don't know, BroadwayCon was a convention held at the Javits center in New York City from January 27th to the 29th and I am not exaggerating when I say that it was one of the best weekends of my life. Honestly, I did not know what to expect going into it. It was only the second year that Playbill and Mischief Management teamed up to put this event on and last year's convention was visited by a giant blizzard. I had gone with my two best friends and even though this was our first year going, we went all out with a different cosplay each day. These consisted of The Schuyler Sisters, all three Heathers, and Danny, Sandy, and Rizzo from Grease. As soon as we stepped into the Javits center it was as if we were stepping into another world. A world where it was okay to burst out into showtunes, find a way to quote a musical to any conversation, and meet your favorite Broadway actors as they were just walking around. There were Glindas, newsies, and Hamilton's galore.  (more...)
