BWW Review: Wicked Good WICKED at PPAC
by Andria Tieman - Sep 23, 2016

The musical WICKED is officially 12 years old, but it isn't showing its age in the slightest.  If anything, in the current political climate, the far away Land of OZ feels more real than ever, and the political issues that drive Elphaba to become The Wicked Witch, draw a spooky parallel with current news stories.  That's not to say that this show is all doom and gloom, but rather just an incredibly smart prequel to the much-loved Wizard of Oz with some of the catchiest and most powerful songs ever.  Marry an excellent story with a phenomenally talented cast, fantastic sets and a powerful orchestra and you have a production that continues to amaze even through multiple viewings.  The national tour of Wicked has resulted in nearly 17 million people watching this show, and it's a pretty safe bet that most of those people would like to see it again. BWW Review: THE MERCHANT OF VENICE Trades Up And Pays Off
by Herbert Paine - Oct 24, 2016

Southwest Shakespeare Company's second offering of its 23rd Season is THE MERCHANT OF VENICE and it is, to use the Bard's words, a palpable hit. Contemporizing Shakespeare's plays isn't an original concept, but its application in the current production works especially well and reflects a series of astute decisions by director Kent Burnham that enhance the work's accessibility, relevance, and poignancy. BWW Review: RUN, 2 FACED DANCE, Dance Xchange, 14 October 2016
by Emma Cann - Oct 16, 2016

2 Faced Dance Company's Run is an evening of dance presented by three female choreographers, featuring three new works from the company's artistic director Tamsin Fitzgerald, Prague-based Lenka Vagnerova and the first BENCH commission recipient Rebecca Evans. All three pieces - danced by 2 Faced Dance's all-male company - explore human choice and our decision to take flight or fight the darker side of humanity. Themes of fear, paranoia and evil resonate throughout the evening, which feels particularly poignant given the current political instability.  (more...)

BWW Blog: Sam Weber - Selling Out: the Costs and Benefits of Commerciality
by Guest Blogger: Sam Weber - Jul 18, 2016

Since you're on Broadway World, chances are you're the type of person who is familiar with the concept of artist merit.  By that, I mean you're the person who appreciates the lengthy productions of Sunday in the Park with George just as much if not more (let's face it, way more) than you do a spunky production of familiar shows like Footloose or Grease (god bless those good old high school staples).  You're also probably the person who, although you secretly live every time you hear "Defying Gravity", is so over those mainstream shows.  Many college students would much rather revive Applause than they would something like Beauty and the Beast, but when you're breaking into the business or just starting out in production, finding the original artistic value in those "over-exposed" shows might be just what you need to build a reputation. (more...)

WICKED!!!! You tingled didn't you? It's hard not to. No modern musical has had quite the impact that this mega musical has had all over the world. And I won't lie to ya, Wicked hold's a very special place in my heart (listen to track #2 of your cast album, you may hear a familiar voice asking 'Glinda, is it true you were her friend?') But humble bragging aside, Wicked is nothing short of a phenomenon. So this week we've compiled some of our favorite Broadway Sessions performances from Stephen Schwartz's box office blockbuster! 'The Wizard and I,' 'Popular,' 'As Long As Your Mine,' 'No Good Deed,' 'Defying Gravity' and even a cliff notes version of ensembling in Wicked w/ myself and original caster Marcus Choi, it's just too good…or is it Wicked?
