by BWW News Desk - Oct 9, 2013

NEW YORK, NY - All of us have watched with varying degrees of dismay as the US government shut down. Both Republicans and Democrats alike have a wide range of reactions to this event. Some feel helpless and angry while others express satisfaction that this disruption occurred during Obama's administration. Regardless of any individual's view on this scale, one thing is certain: all Americans hope for better Days to Come regardless of politics or economic goals. But what is the effect of the shutdown on Brand America? Or even more specifically on the brands of the parties themselves? Is it Republic vs. Democrat, or something else entirely? Christopher Johnson, CEO of Whitehorn Group, a branding firm in New York says, 'These are not small questions especially from my point of view as a branding expert.' (more...)

From Todd Haimes - THE PEOPLE IN THE PICTUREFrom Todd Haimes - THE PEOPLE IN THE PICTURE
by Roundabout Theatre Company - Mar 31, 2011

As you know, doing a new musical on Broadway is not something that we do very often at Roundabout. But when you see The People in the Picture, I think it will very quickly become clear why I just had to put this show up on our stage. It is so rare these Days to Come upon a new musical that is totally original, created solely from the hearts and minds and talents of its authors, and that feels like a classic piece from the Broadway of old while telling a story that has never been told before. When I first read The People in the Picture, I knew that it had something powerful to say because not only did the songs linger with me days afterward, but the characters stayed with me as well. These characters had grabbed my attention in a very meaningful way, and it was clear to me that they needed to be shared with a larger audience. (more...)

Photo Blast from the Past: Lillian HellmanPhoto Blast from the Past: Lillian Hellman
by Walter McBride - Dec 30, 2013

Today, we're featuring Lillian Hellman, circa 1984. Hellman was an American author of plays, screenplays, and memoirs and throughout her life, was linked with many left-wing political causes. Hellman's drama, The Children's Hour, premiered on Broadway on November 24, 1934, and ran for 691 performances. It depicts a false accusation of lesbianism by a schoolgirl against two of her teachers. In December 1936, her play Days to Come closed its Broadway run after just seven performances. In it, she portrayed a labor dispute in a small Ohio town during which the characters try to balance the competing claims of owners and workers, both represented as valid. Her play The Little Foxes opened on Broadway on February 13, 1939, and ran for 410 performances. Her play Watch on the Rhine opened on Broadway on April 1, 1941, and ran for 378 performances. It won the New York Drama Critics' Circle Award. In April 1944, Hellman's The Searching Wind opened on Broadway. Her third World War II project, it tells the story of an ambassador whose indecisive relations with his wife and mistress mirror the vacillation and appeasement of his professional life. (more...)
