BWW Reviews: AMERICAN IDIOT Blows the Roof off The VortexBWW Reviews: AMERICAN IDIOT Blows the Roof off The Vortex
by Ellen Dostal - May 24, 2015

A sexy cast of beautiful people inhabits Green Day's punk rock opera American Idiot, in a ferocious glory|struck production that opened last weekend at The Vortex. Directors Topher Rhys and Jen Oundjian (who also choreographs) take full advantage of the concert venue space and go for a panoramic experience, moving the action offstage whenever possible. The concept enhances the surround sound feel of the show and if you approach it from a concert mindset it will be easy to go with the flow. In a way, by chopping up the visual space to include playing areas all around the space, it enhances the disconnectedness we see in the characters. Plus, there is a certain kind of bond an audience feels with an actor when he is dripping with sweat and singing his guts out right next to you. (more...)

BWW Reviews: The Second City's ITHAMAR HAS NOTHING TO SAY Provides Silent, Sly AmusementBWW Reviews: The Second City's ITHAMAR HAS NOTHING TO SAY Provides Silent, Sly Amusement
by Rachel Weinberg - Jun 15, 2015

While 'Ithamar Has Nothing to Say' is a silent solo sketch show - and the only show of this kind I have seen - I nevertheless must use the written word to describe the happenings therein. Directed by Frank Caeti, Mainstage alum Ithamar Enriquez takes the stage in a one-man show that harkens back to the silent film comedies of the 1930s made famous by such noted film artists as Buster Keaton, and, of course, Charlie Chaplin.
