These three original Sondheim cast members share songs and stories, recalling their experiences creating their roles in these landmark musicals on Broadway. The show is conceived and directed by Grammy and Emmy Award winner, John McDaniel, as part of his second season as artistic director of the Eugene O'Neill Theater Center's Cabaret and Performance conference. Matthews Playhouse's School of Theatre, presents West Side Story, the American musical inspired by William Shakespeare, with music by Leonard Bernstein and lyrics by Stephen Sondheim. This action-packed musical depicts the rivalry between to teen street gangs, The Jets and the Sharks of two different ethnic backgrounds. Emily Trainor, a high school senior at Providence High School and student of the School of Theatre portrays the role of Anita, the sexy, sassy sister of Bernardo, the leader of the Sharks. The young protagonist, Tony, a member of The Jets, falls in love with Maria, the sister of the leader of the Sharks (Bernardo). Anita and Maria are friends that work at a bridal shop together. The conflict and prejudices that arise as a result of this "forbidden" love affair is explosive, entertaining, and captivating. (more...)

The Tale of the Allergist's Wife opened Saturday January 10 at the White Theatre located in the Jewish Community Center in Overland Park. Barb Nichols directs the play by Charles Busch, which opened on Broadway in November of 2000 running for 777 performances. The Tale of the Allergist's Wife won the Outer Critics Circle John Gassner Award for Outstanding Playwrighting and received one additional Outer Critics Circle Award nomination plus three Tony Award nominations and two Drama Desk Award nomination. Based on the film La Femme de Boulanger by Marcel Pagnol and Jean Giono, The Baker's Wife features music and lyrics byStephen Schwartz (Wicked) and a book by Joseph Stein (Fiddler of the Roof). A modern day fable of love that has remained a cult favorite, the musical features the songs 'Meadowlark' and 'Proud Lady,' amongst the many other hidden treasures in this musical. This rarely produced musical will warm the hearts of romantics and cynics alike because this is story is not about true love but about the truth in love and how it shapes us. On Sunday, February 8 LA's Next Great Stage Star 2015 came to an exciting conclusion at Sterling's Upstairs at the Federal. After an amazing 90-minute program in which the 20 contestants gave 150% to their uptempo songs from Broadway shows, fourteen contestants were eliminated and the top six* finalists selected. After a brief intermission, the announcement was made and each of the six then proceeded to perform a second number after which the distinguished panel of 15 judges made the final decision. Musical director par excellence James Lent accompanied at the piano throughout the three hour show. (more...)
