I'm late to the Luba Mason party. I first took notice of her when I attended a performance of The Civilians' PRETTY FILTHY, and I was impressed by her serenely sensual alto instrument. As she is prepping to take 54 Below by storm tonight with her cabaret show MIXTURA 2, I've been acquainting myself with her albums COLLAGE and KRAZY LOVE. Both are delightfully jazzy collections sure to add some spice to your life. (more...)

Famous celebrities, singers, musicians, actors and the like, can often seem almost other-worldly. As if they're from some other dimension or planet, different from ours, one we'll never fully experience or understand. Others, though, seem so remarkably a part of our world and a familiar resident in it that the quality becomes one of their calling cards. For his entire decade-spanning career, John Mellencamp has been one of those artists. He has always had an everyman quality, as if he has worked the same jobs we have, dreamed the same dreams, lived the same life and had the same experiences. And, of course, he has had some of those same dreams and experiences, he's just been able to craft them into songs which have more than stood the test of time and still have as much relevance and power as on the day he wrote them. A quaint, well-loved home is where the scene is set. Minimal set dressings to mask the beautiful awkwardness of the first scene - with remnants of Anton Chekov's greatest works scattered upon the mantle. These little trinkets are entirely appropriate since three of the four title roles were named after Chekov's characters. Vanya, the brother in the play, blames the unfortunate circumstance of his unusual name on his having professors for parents. (more...)
