Pacific Symphony Gala Celebrates Carl St.Clair's 25 Years in Orange CountyPacific Symphony Gala Celebrates Carl St.Clair's 25 Years in Orange County
by BWW News Desk - May 26, 2015

?More than 400 guests dressed in their finest gathered on Saturday, May 16, to participate in one of Pacific Symphony's most heartwarming galas to date, “Celebrating Carl St.Clair's 25 Years in Orange County.” Honoring the beloved music director's 25 years with the orchestra, the 2015 gala took place at the Hotel Irvine, where the sights, tastes and aromas of Orange County were center stage. Thanks to the vision of co-chairs Lynn Freeman and Ellie Gordon, the focus was also on fun and celebration, as guests arrived to revel in an OC classic: a beach party! Donning sunglasses and flip–flops, attendees engaged in friendly competition, playing games such as ultimate Frisbee and “Hang 10,” while sipping cocktails and enjoying a surf band rocking Beach Boys tunes. The evening transitioned into a memorable tribute to Maestro St.Clair as guests feasted in an enchanting orange grove. After an exciting live auction and generous “Fund-A-Dream,” Symphony musicians surprised the audience with a “flash mob” performance of Beethoven's Ninth with a rock overlay, which led straight into the party tunes of JT & Friends.  (more...)

by Randy Rainbow - Jun 29, 2015

Can you believe it's been almost 28 years since the original production of Into the Woods opened on Broadway? Seems like only yesterday my mother was dragging a 6-year-old me, literally kicking and screaming, from below the marquee of the Martin Beck Theatre (now the Al Hirschfeld) to the Winter Garden Theatre where Cats was playing. (I wanted desperately to see Into the Woods, but a family 'friend' told my parents that Cats would be more appropriate for my age group. Thanks for ruining my life, lady.) In the right light, you can still to this day see my claw marks scraped along 45th Street. (more...)

BWW Reviews: BAD JEWS a Riotous Dramedy at the GeffenBWW Reviews: BAD JEWS a Riotous Dramedy at the Geffen
by Don Grigware - Jun 19, 2015

Excessively harsh reality is at the core of most current popular dramedies as it is on television. A character cannot be rude or abrasive enough to arouse a viewer's attention or glean laughs. It's particularly characteristic of the irritating females who talk too fast, too loud and scream their shrewish lungs out. It makes me happy that I live alone; and yes, I do care and respect others and their feelings; but, being pleasant nowadays is considered boring and in drama, it will never win awards, so on with the show. In Joshua Harmon's Bad Jews currently onstage at the Geffen Playhouse there is such a character Daphna (Molly Ephraim), Hebrew for Diana, who with her two cousins Jonah (Raviv Ullman) and Liam (Ari Brand) are in New York to pay homage to their dead grandfather, their beloved Poppy, a Holocaust survivor. Daphna is referred to by Liam as a super Jew. (more...)

The Mystery of the Lindbergh Kidnapping Highlighted in New ReleaseThe Mystery of the Lindbergh Kidnapping Highlighted in New Release
by BWW News Desk - Aug 27, 2015

Among the many spectacular crimes of the twentieth century-the assassination of President Kennedy, the serial murders of John Wayne Gacy and Ted Bundy, the trial of O. J. Simpson-none was more mysterious and riveting than the 1932 kidnapping and murder of the infant son of Charles A. Lindbergh. Its cast of characters would delight any author of detective novels: the father, an American aviator hero, the first to fly solo over the Atlantic; his lovely wife, the daughter of an ambassador and mother of the first-born son Charlie; an illegal immigrant from Germany charged with the kidnapping; a Bronx schoolteacher designated to Carry On ransom negotiations; various underworld characters enlisted to try to find the kidnapped child; a gruff Irish detective dissatisfied with the investigation of the case; a young and aggressive FBI director interested in self-publicity; a prosecutor who may not have believed that one man alone could have done the kidnapping; and a variety of household staff who had peculiar stories to tell. by BWW News Desk - Aug 14, 2015

In 1968, amid an economic boom, many in Japan registered widespread discontent over social inequalities. At the same time, the country was roiled by protests against the Vietnam War and the upcoming renewal of a treaty extending American occupation. These circumstances mark the point of departure for For a New World to Come: Experiments in Japanese Art and Photography, 1968–1979, the first comprehensive exhibition to focus upon a critical moment when Japanese artists and photographers, sensing that their traditional practices were no longer valid, began experimenting with the possibilities of camera-based practices, laying the foundations for contemporary art in Japan.
