Based on the play I Am a Camera by John Van Druten

Based on stories by Christopher Isherwood

The infamous Kit Kat Klub has undergone a new makeover. Grab a VIP seat and become a part of the action. Ö A female master of ceremonies hosts a decadent and sensual interpretation of CABARET.

Based on the original concept and script, this staged version brings forth the turmoil of love, trust, denial and desire embodied in Sally Bowles as well as the young and restless curiosity of a defiant American named Cliff.

From the producer that brought you the smash hit, Elevator, and the director of Into the Woods and Pippin.

Set against the backdrop of pre-World War II, the show takes place inside a provocative, yet forbidden Kit Kat Klub, where the relationship between cabaret performer Sally Bowles and the handsome American Cliff Bradshaw flourishes only to be confronted by social taboos and the imminent rise of the Nazi Party.

Overseeing all of the action in CABARET is the Master of Ceremonies (MC) of the Kit Kat Klub, who serves as a cultural metaphor and the upbeat catalyst to the ever-changing climate of the show.

Reflecting the moods and guiding the minds of the characters on stage, the MC takes pleasure in reminding the audience how easily society falls prey to the electrifying chaos that surrounds them. It is best to leave all inhibitions outside.

BWW Review: A PACIFIST'S GUIDE TO THE WAR ON CANCER, National Theatre, 19 October 2016
by Marianka Swain - Oct 20, 2016

How do you make a musical about cancer? This latest work from Bryony Kimmings isn't just theatre, but metatheatre. Her voiceovers and the emails published in the programme detail the at times highly personal development process, and a gut punch of a last 15 minutes strip away the comfort of fictional distance. It could be self-indulgent; instead, it becomes an effective method for making us confront that other, bigger question: how do we talk about, prepare for and deal with illness? (more...)

BWW Review: Christine Ebersole Achieves Quirky Poignancy While Reflecting on a New Chapter in AFTER THE BALL at the Café Carlyle
by Casey Mink - Oct 20, 2016

The Cafe Carlyle is one of most renowned venues for Cabaret in the country, seeped in history so rich it could fill a PBS special. In no way, though, does its historical significance relegate a show to seriousness. Take, for example, two-time Tony Award winner Christine Ebersole (42ND STREET, GREY GARDENS), who returned to the Cafe Carlyle for the start of what is her impressive sixth engagement at the supper club on October 11. Buoyant and self-effacing, Ebersole made it quite clear to her audience, through both her song selections and banter, that silliness and poignancy can walk hand in hand, often times to a more moving effect than either component on its own. Additionally, the very title of Ebersole's show, AFTER THE BALL, encapsulates a duality of its own, of both the specific relief and now-what sadness which accompanies the turning of life's pages. That page for Ebersole currently refers to her now-empty nest, having recently sent the last of her three children off to college. Fittingly, Ebersole kicked off her set with the song from which she got her show's moniker, "After the Ball," by Charles K. Harris. Melancholic and lilt, the song was prescient in underlining the evening's intent to investigate---with humor, introspection, and splendid tunes---this new chapter of Ebersole's life. (more...)

BWW Review: Adam Pascal and Anthony Rapp Reflect Upon RENT's Continued Impact in CELEBRATING 20 YEARS OF FRIENDSHIP at Feinstein's/54 Below
by Casey Mink - Oct 20, 2016

Often, when performers get their big break at a young age, they spend the ensuing years of their career attempting to escape out from under that encompassing shadow. For Adam Pascal and Anthony Rapp, who met in the original Off-Broadway production of RENT in 1995, that is only half true. In the 20 years since that groundbreaking musical about visionary but disease-stricken bohemians launched their careers, both performers have gone on to perform plentifully inside the theatre and aside from it. However, both Pascal and Rapp have spent the last two decades not basking in the bygone glory of having once starred in a cultural phenomenon, but with the celebratory awareness that each subsequent opportunity likely may not have fallen into their paths without having done so. For proof of such a mentality, look no further than the duo's two-hander string of shows at Feinstein's/54 Below, ACOUSTICALLY SPEAKING: CELEBRATING 20 YEARS OF FRIENDSHIP, the first of which kicked off an impressive 11-performance run on October 8. That title, though, is in part misleading. Although there was ample reflection on behalf of both parties in regards to the near quarter century since they met, the evening consisted of two distinctly separate shows, save for the exception of a select few songs which the two performed together. BWW Review: Consummate Entertainer Sidney Myer Delights in His Return to the Laurie Beechman Theatre
by Alix Cohen - Oct 20, 2016

Twelve years after his last full show and a full 36 since he performed at the venerable Laurie Beechman Theatre, entertainer (and Don't Tell Mama booker) Sidney Myer commanded the stage as if he'd been there yesterday. I attended the second of three sold-out presentations marked as fundraisers for The Mabel Mercer Foundation, likely the only organization for which Sidney would take on such a project. The concerts are a 'thank you' to the art's standard bearer and its creator Donald Smith, who gave Sidney wide exposure and exceptional latitude at every Cabaret Convention from the third on, a tradition maintained today. Photo Coverage: Inside Opening Night at the 27th New York Cabaret Convention
by Stephen Sorokoff - Oct 19, 2016

Lovers of Cabaret flocked to New York's Jazz at Lincoln Center's Rose Theatre last night to attend The 27th New York Cabaret Convention and BroadwayWorld was there. Unlike a political convention there was complete agreement that this annual event produced and sponsored by the Mabel Mercer Foundation is one of the best entertainment experiences of the year.  Madam Chairman' and artistic director KT Sullivan kept complete order as one by one the wonderful vocalists made their case to the extremely knowledgeable 'delegates' filling Rose Hall at Jazz at Lincoln Center. It's not politically correct to pick winners at the annual event, which presents newcomers and veterans of the Cabaret art form, but if there's one......  The Audience!  For two hours they hear some great music and get a potpourri of diverse singing styles that make the long evening seem brief.  The superb song stylist and New York based vocalist Natalie Douglas was deservedly presented the prestigious Donald F. Smith award, and legend Maureen McGovern received the Mable Mercer Award.  (more...)

BWW Review: Singer TORY STOLPER Brings Her Original Journey to Sterling's
by Don Grigware - Oct 18, 2016

My favorite part of the evening was the inclusion of the standards all of which are nicely suited to Stolper's voice and delivery. They were Sondheim's 'Move On' from Sunday in the Park with George. a gorgeous rendition of 'Something Good' sung originally by Julie Andrews in the film The Sound of Music, and lastly Carole King's 'Beautiful', all adding uber positive touches to Stolper's creative and personal journey thus far. She concluded as she had begun with Peter Pan, only this time with Scott Alan's lovely contemporary perspective  'Never Never Land (Fly Away)'.  (more...)
