BWW Column: How Can GALAVANT Improve if Renewed for Unlikely Third Season?

The second season of ABC's medieval musical comedy GALAVANT opens with a song entitled 'A New Season,' a direct response to the nearly unanimous opinion that it would be cancelled after its initial eight-episode run. However, despite middling numbers, ABC brought the quirky show from Dan Fogelman, Alan Menken, and Glenn Slater back this January. While I thought the sophomore season's comedy and storytelling were far superior to the often meandering first season's, Season 2 has struggled to find an audience, rarely able to garner even half the rating's share of Season 1. So, while it is looking extremely unlikely that ABC will roll the dice on the show again, if they do, I have some suggestions for Team GALAVANT that I think will give them a fighting chance in Season 3. Alliance Theatre Extends ETHEL Through May 1

The Alliance Theatre has announced its a final extension of the smash hit, ETHEL, written by and starring accomplished Atlanta performer Terry Burrell. ETHEL is a glimpse into the magnificent and very complicated life of the legendary stage and film star ETHEL Waters. ETHEL will close the Alliance's Hertz Stage season at the Alliance Theatre. The show was scheduled to close on April 17, and had already extended once to April 24. This is a final extension and the show MUST CLOSE on May 1, 2016. (more...)

BWW Review: Ambitious BRING IT ON's Stars Shine at Wayne Densch PAC

For community theatres, producing a musical can be ambitious for any number of reasons; the difficulty of the music, the complexity of the dramatic content, the number of settings required, the size of the cast needed, but it is difficult to imagine a more ambitious project than the Wayne Densch Performing Arts Center's recent production of BRING IT ON THE MUSICAL. Though the stage adaptation's story, script, and score are completely original, they do draw inspiration from the series of teen films of the same name set in the high-stakes world of competitive high school cheerleading. Against that backdrop, the story is a funny, surprisingly touching tale of female empowerment and friendship. (more...)
