AMERICAN PSYCHO to Open on Broadway in Fall 2015?
by BWW News Desk - Sep 17, 2014

Now according to the New York Times, steps are being made to bring the show straight to Broadway in Fall 2015. Act 4 founder, David Johnson told NYT that the arrangements with Second Stage "just weren't in the best interests of the production and its continuing life." He also acknowledged that Broadway producers Jeffrey Richards and Jerry Frankel were amongst "several theater professionals" who advised that the new musical should move straight to Broadway. Both of which are currently in talks to be lead producers for the Broadway run. Richards told NYT: "I just felt the proposal by Second Stage was something that did not serve the best interests of the production. I heard from other producers that they also spoke with Act 4. We were all asked for advice, and we gave it. I saw 'American Psycho' in London, and I thought it was terrific." (more...)

BWW Preview: Do You Want to Live FOREVER?
by Meg Wood - Sep 16, 2014

Greetings! I am thrilled to join you here at BWW to recap the new series “Forever.” The premise of the show is that Dr. Henry Morgan, an N.Y.P.D. coroner, has a small secret: He's about 200 years old and cannot die. Shows about immortality have always intrigued me, mostly because they have rarely been very successful. That's odd. Everyone has a fantasy of immortality, at least at times one is not rebalancing one's retirement account. It seems immortality shows should exercise a lure to viewers. That does not appear to be the case. (more...)

The Gateway Family YMCA Offers Tips for Childhood Obesity Awareness Month
by BWW News Desk - Sep 15, 2014

September is Childhood Obesity Awareness Month, and while the dangers of childhood obesity are well-chronicled, many children who are overweight or obese don't realize it. That's why The Gateway Family YMCA - a leading voice on improving health- wants families to understand the role weight perception plays in childhood obesity and ways to reverse course through increased physical activity and improved eating habits. A recent report by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention's National Center for Health Statistics says about 30 percent of children and adolescents aged 8-15 in the United States misperceive their weight, with approximately 81 percent of overweight boys and 71 percent of overweight girls believing they are about the right weight. Here in New Jersey 17 percent of all children are considered overweight, and 17.3 percent of all children are considered obese according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (cdc.gov). If unchecked, obesity puts children at risk for many chronic diseases seen in adults such as high cholesterol, cardiovascular disease, high Blood pressure and type 2 diabetes. 'The best way to find out if your child's weight might be affecting their health is to visit your pediatrician or primary health care provider,' said, Krystal R. Canady. CEO, 'Once a family understands any weight-related risks, they can work together to incorporate more physical activity and healthy eating habits into their daily routines.' The following tips are some great ways to incorporate more activity and healthier eating habits into your daily family routine: • Eat Healthy: Make water the drink of choice (supplemented by age-appropriate portions of 100 percent fruit juices and low-fat milk) and make it easy for everyone to fill half their plates with fruits and vegetables by offering two or three colorful options. Feel free to mix and match fresh, frozen and canned fruits and vegetables to provide variety. • Play Every Day/Go Outside: Kids should have at least an hour a day of unstructured play outside (when possible) and break a sweat at least three times a week by getting 20 minutes or more of vigorous physical activity. • Get Together: Eat as a family as frequently as possible with kids involved in meal preparation and clean up. In addition, adults should take a break from electronics and spend one-on-one time each day with their kids, enjoying one another's company. • Reduce Screen Time: Time spent in front of a television, computer, tablet, cell phone or video games should be limited to two hours per day. • Sleep Well: Kids and adults need to keep a regular sleep schedule-10-12 hours per night for kids and seven to eight hours for adults. In addition to being healthy at home, there is a need to maintain healthy habits while in childcare, school or at out-of-school programs. 'To create healthy environments in out-of-school programs, The Gateway Family YMCA is implementing Healthy Eating and Physical Activity Standards in our before and after school programs as part of the Y's commitment to the Partnership for a Healthier America,' added Melynda A. Mileski, Chief Operations Officer. The steps taken by the Y include: • Provide a fruit and/or vegetable at all meals and snacks. • Only provide milk and water as beverages. • Serve meals and snacks family-style. • Set limits on screen time. • Provide daily physical activity, outdoors when possible. • Promote and support exclusive breastfeeding for infants. • Have adults model healthy food and beverage choices and active play. In addition, The Gateway Family YMCA incorporates Healthy U and CATCH (Coordinated Approach To Child Health) curriculum in the preschool, afterschool and summer camp programs. CATCH is an evidence-based and award winning curriculum that was created by national education and child health experts. To learn more about The Gateway Family YMCA's programs dedicated to healthy living, please visit www.tgfymca.org or contact the Elizabeth Branch at 908-355-9622, Five Points Branch 908-688-9622, Rahway Branch 732-388-0057 or the Wellness Center Branch 908-349-9622. BWW Reviews: STC's BLOOD RELATIONS Is Overly Complicated
by Jay Irwin - Sep 14, 2014

Many have attempted to fictionalize the tale of Lizzie Borden. Hell, there's even a rock musical version of the story (that is awesome, by the way). Why? Because we all love a scandal. If this had happened today it'd be all over the news-tainment channels and internet for days (until the next scandal comes along). So authors and producers keep coming back to it especially since she got away with it, assuming she really did it at all. No one really knows for sure. And while the tale still lends some fascination, the current retelling in Sound Theatre Company's production of "Blood Relations" manages to get unnecessarily complicated while not really conveying much that's interesting or enlightening about the story.
