In Bells Are Ringing, a lonely young woman can't help getting involved in the lives of her answering service clients. When she falls for a man she has met only by voice, classic 1950s mayhem ensues. The score, by turns brassy, sweet and romantic, includes "Just in Time," "The Party's Over," "I Met a Girl," "Long Before I Knew You" and a fistful of other great tunes from one of Broadway's greatest tunesmiths. The original production opened at the Shubert Theater on November 29, 1956, and played a total of 924 performances. The entire original production was directed by Jerome Robbins; dance and musical numbers of the original production were staged by Jerome Robbins and Bob Fosse. The show won Tony awards for its stars Judy Holliday and Sydney Chaplin.

BWW Review: Jeff Harnar Dazzles A Sold-Out Metropolitan Room With An Engaging Revival of His '1959 Broadway Songbook'
by Victoria Ordin - Aug 23, 2016

When a show at the Metropolitan Room starts over thirty minutes late because the staff is frantically trying to find chairs and room for the better part of New York's cabaret community, you know you're in store for something truly special. And unless there's a chair thief on the loose in Flatiron who doesn't like Broadway, someone clearly oversold this show and/or lost track of comps; this was extremely vexing with a heat advisory in effect. Still, the mood was festive in anticipation of Jeff Harnar's 1959 Broadway Songbook, the 12th installment in Stephen Hanks' impressive (and increasingly well-known) New York Cabaret's Greatest Hits series. Harnar's show premiered 25 years ago at the Algonquin's Oak Room. Two years later, PBS filmed the collaboration with musical director Alex Rybeck, whose arrangements honor the original compositions but reimagine them in sometimes astonishing ways, making them genuinely creative acts. BWW Review: Kate Baldwin & Graham Rowat Chart Out CONSTELLATIONS at Berkshire Theatre Group
by Justin J Sacramone - Aug 11, 2016

Nick Payne's Constellations uses the hypothetical existence of a multiverse and applies it to the coupling of Marianne and Roland over and over again. A multiverse is the scientific theory that challenges physics and suggests all consequences of our lives are living symmetrically on a plane and the outcome is an endless roll of the dice. We witness the action progressing them forward in life as it consistently resets, skews or diverts dramatically. Boy meets girl is no longer a simple narrative. What sounds like a storytelling gimmick, expediently becomes throbbing unsuspecting drama that is as intimate as is it vast. Perhaps I would have paid attention in high school science if it was taught to me this way. (more...)
