Pittsburgh Opera Launches 77th Season With Verdi's NABUCCO, 10/10

Pittsburgh, PA… Pittsburgh Opera opens its 77th season with a grand, traditional production of Verdi's opera NABUCCO. On stage October 10, 13, 16, and 18, NABUCCO brings a fusion of epic scale and intimate family drama to the Benedum Center. Pittsburgh favorite Mark Delavan (seen here as Falstaff 2009, Scarpia/Tosca2012, and Rigoletto 2013) stars as the troubled monarch, and rising star Csilla Boross takes the fiendishly difficult role of his treacherous daughter Abigaille, in her Pittsburgh debut. Music Director Antony Walker conducts the Pittsburgh Opera Orchestra and Chorus; Bernard Uzan is director and co-designer of the traditional set and its projections. Tickets start at $12. (more...)

Oakland Symphony Youth Orchestra Releases Schedule for 2015-2016 Season

Oakland, October 13, 2015 - Winners of the Young Composer Competition and the Concerto Competition will be featured as part of the three-concert 2015-2016 season of the Oakland Symphony Youth Orchestra, Music Director Michael Morgan and Principal Conductor Omid Zoufonoun have announced. The home season runs November 15, 2015 through May 22, 2016, and will be followed by the Youth Orchestra's debut tour to Cuba. Concert details are listed below. Rekindled by the 2006 film She's the Man, this Shakespearian romantic romp is oozing with mistaken identity and heartsick characters. BWW Interview: Tech Talk with Set Designer Lisa Laratta

One of the more clearly visible technical aspects of a show for average theatre-goers is the set. What isn't quite as clear is just what goes into the creation of the world the characters inhabit in the play you are seeing. Set design, sometimes called scenic design, is the art of designing and creating the sets used in plays or movies. At times, designing can be as simple as arranging a few pieces of furniture on a stage. That type of set design is not what one things of, however, when one talks to set designer, Lisa Laratta, the subject of this edition of Tech Talk. (more...)
