BWW Recap: Phil Takes The Dunphys to Awesomeland on MODERN FAMILYBWW Recap: Phil Takes The Dunphys to Awesomeland on MODERN FAMILY
by Matt Smith - Oct 30, 2014

It's the annual Halloween episode, and given MODERN FAMILY's previous Day of the Dead-themed outings, I've got high hopes for this one. Holiday episodes in general can go either way — because you've got a broad holiday that everyone can relate to, but then you have to tailor it to that specific show and those characters. Again, MODERN FAMILY has some pretty good outings, but with the holiday repeatedly coming every year, the decision to do a Halloween episode every season means continually having to work with this same formula — except that they then can't do what they did the previous year, but of course, are still working around the same holiday. BWW Recap: 'The Past is Past' on BOARDWALK EMPIRE's Series FinaleBWW Recap: 'The Past is Past' on BOARDWALK EMPIRE's Series Finale
by Jessica Naftaly - Oct 27, 2014

Here we are, at the end. It's a bittersweet moment to say goodbye to a show as brilliant as BOARDWALK, but it must be done. So raise your glasses 'to the lost' one last time, waving off an exceptionally superb show that we loved with all our hearts! This ultimate episode, entitled 'Eldorado', meaning a land of weath and opportunity, opened in a parallel scene to what we are used to seeing in our opening credits. Nucky, on the shores of Atlantic City. It's different this time however. It's darker, Nucky removes all of his items of wealth and stature, and dives head first into the raging tides of the water, a truly incredibly metaphor for the door to Hell and darkness Nucky walked through and never came back out of. BWW Reviews: WingSpan Takes Calculated Risk and Scores BIG with Tennessee Williams' THE TWO CHARACTER PLAYBWW Reviews: WingSpan Takes Calculated Risk and Scores BIG with Tennessee Williams' THE TWO CHARACTER PLAY
by Buster Spiller - Oct 22, 2014

Americans are particularly spoiled when it comes to what we expect from films, television, and theater. We have to have a presentation that follows a very predicable format, including a likeable hero or heroine, antagonist, life conflict that mirrors our own, and a climax in which good wins over evil. We want to leave these experiences feeling completely uplifted and good about ourselves. What is perceived as negative isn't even part of our collective consciousness. (more...)

BWW Reviews: South Coast Rep Presents World Premiere of ZEALOTBWW Reviews: South Coast Rep Presents World Premiere of ZEALOT
by Michael L. Quintos - Nov 4, 2014

In the world premiere production of playwright (and creator of NBC's Smash) Theresa Rebeck's ZEALOT---now performing at South Coast Repertory in Costa Mesa through November 16---Mecca, Saudi Arabia serves as the setting for a volatile tug-of-war that erupts at the start of the 'Hajj,' the holy city's annual Islamic pilgrimage. Here a young woman's act of civil disobedience incites riots, prompting a carefully-considered, if endlessly circling debate on the merits of whether to comply and honor a host country's 'traditional' rules, or to allow Western ideologies to triumph in order to best serve the needs of a fellow human---a fellow global citizen---in dire need of care and protection. While Rebeck's play, helmed by SCR's own artistic director Marc Masterson, is generally insightful, the play feels pretty unfinished, as if there's plenty more to unearth in the narrative that didn't quite make it to the page (and, consequently, the stage). Regrettably, it doesn't quite reach the point of heightened urgency you would come to expect in a drama with such a politically-charged storyline. (more...)

BWW Reviews: Mark Taper Forum's WHAT THE BUTLER SAWBWW Reviews: Mark Taper Forum's WHAT THE BUTLER SAW
by Don Grigware - Nov 25, 2014

Joe Orton's insanely insane world in 1960s England is no better displayed than in his third and final play What the Butler Saw now onstage at the Mark Taper Forum through December 21. A terrifically energized cast are on hand as is seasoned director John Tillinger, but things got off to a somewhat slow start opening night and really did not start to cook until Act II. It might be the width and depth of the Taper stage, which is not easy to cross that rapidly. I saw a production a couple of years back at the Odyssey, and the space being half the size, entrances and exits were quicker as was the tempo of the whole play. (more...)

BWW Recap: GOTHAM is Dented and Bombed While the Cat Sleeps Over at Wayne ManorBWW Recap: GOTHAM is Dented and Bombed While the Cat Sleeps Over at Wayne Manor
by Jeffrey Walker - Nov 17, 2014

GOTHAM added a new major player into the mix this week: Harvey Dent. For the unwashed masses, future district attorney Harvey Dent meets with a “scarry” accident and takes on the mantel of Two-Face who always gives crime a 50-50 chance when he flips a partially mutilated coin. As he is introduced to viewers and detective James Gordon, however, he is a singularly handsome, coin-flipping, do-gooder and he joins forces with Gordon to investigate the Wayne murder case. Oswald's beak finds Mooney's secret weapon against Carmine Falcone, Liza. Young Bruce Wayne also begins his heavy duty training with his British Special Forces veteran butler, Alfred Pennyworth. And, surprisingly, Bruce and Alfred take on a new house guest. Here's the rundown on another jam-packed episode in the naked city of Gotham. Spoilers are likely, so tread lightly, Bat-fans.
