THAT QUEER BLIND SILENCE to Play 13th St. Rep, 8/5-23THAT QUEER BLIND SILENCE to Play 13th St. Rep, 8/5-23
by BWW News Desk - Jul 8, 2015

The human condition of gays in contemporary Russia mirrors life in a phantasmagoric insane Asylum. That's the view of a new play, 'That Queer Blind Silence' (www.thatqueerblindsilence.com) by emigre playwright Sophia Romma. Her political farce, written in English but in the style of Russian Expressionism, depicts the ordeals of a fictional figure skater whose character was inspired partly by the life and career of bronze medalist Johnny Weir. Underground International Voices of Theatre, in association with The O'Neill Film and Theatrical Foundation, will present the play's world premiere run August 5 to 23 at 13th Street Repertory Company, 50 West 13th Street, NYC, directed by John Beshaw-Farrell. Ten percent of ticket sales will be donated to Underground International Voices of Theatre to support that organization's efforts for equal rights of the LGBTQ community in the Russian Federation. Met Museum's VAN GOGH: IRISES AND ROSES Exhibit to Close, 8/16Met Museum's VAN GOGH: IRISES AND ROSES Exhibit to Close, 8/16
by BWW News Desk - Aug 3, 2015

Vincent van Gogh (1853-1890) brought his work in Provence to a close with exuberant bouquets of spring flowers - two of irises, two of roses, in contrasting formats and color schemes - in which he sought to impart a 'calm, unremitting ardor' to his 'last touch of the brush.' Painted on the eve of his departure from the Asylum at Saint-Rémy and conceived as a series or ensemble on a par with the Sunflowers decoration painted earlier in Arles, the group includes the Metropolitan Museum's Irises and Roses and their counterparts: the upright Irises from the Van Gogh Museum, Amsterdam and the horizontal Roses from the National Gallery of Art, Washington, D.C. The four paintings are reunited for the first time since the artist's death in this unique presentation, providing a singular opportunity to reconsider Van Gogh's artistic aims and the impact of dispersal and color fading on his intended results.
