Leapin’ lizards! The popular comic strip heroine takes center stage in one of the world’s best-loved musicals. Annie is a spunky Depression-era orphan determined to find her parents, who abandoned her years ago on the doorstep of a New York City orphanage run by the cruel, embittered Miss Hannigan, the funniest villain this side of a Disney cartoon. In adventure after fun-filled adventure, Annie foils Miss Hannigan’s evil schemes, befriends President Franklin Delano Roosevelt and finds a new family and home in billionaire Oliver Warbucks, his personal secretary Grace Farrell and a lovable mutt named Sandy.

CABARET LIFE NYC: Listmania Redux! My Best/Favorite 20 Shows & Performances of 2014, With 30 'Bests & Mosts' of An Exciting Year in CabaretCABARET LIFE NYC: Listmania Redux! My Best/Favorite 20 Shows & Performances of 2014, With 30 'Bests & Mosts' of An Exciting Year in Cabaret
by Stephen Hanks - Jan 21, 2015

As the days dwindled down to a precious few in 2014, a few cabaret goers and performers in what is affectionately but also self-mockingly called the “cabaret community” would sidle up and ask if I was planning my annual end-of-the year “Best Of” column, similar to the “Top 20 Bests and Favorites” piece over the first half of the year I posted back in early July. I would respond in the negative with very reasonable and believable excuses, but the truth is I didn't want to reveal my “Bests” of the year until the voting for the 2014 BroadwayWorld New York Cabaret Awards had ended. There's enough baggage and backstage whispering that comes with administering the BWW Awards, so I wasn't about to publish any opinions that might influence the vote while it was in process. I may be crazy but I'm not masochistic. But now all bets are off. You want lists? I'll give you lists. (more...)

BWW Reviews: AVENUE Q Wins Over Sioux FallsBWW Reviews: AVENUE Q Wins Over Sioux Falls
by Ellie Livingston - Jan 21, 2015

"What do you do with a BA in English? What is my life going to be? Four years of college and plenty of knowledge has earned me this useless degree. I can't pay the bill yet, cause I've got no skills yet. The world is a big scary place. But somehow I can't shake, the feeling I might make, a difference to the human race!" These relatable and extremely insightful lyrics are the first lines in the musical Avenue Q, which can now be seen at The Sioux Empire Community Theatre in downtown Sioux Falls, and it is sung by a puppet. Throughout the show I was struck with just how relatable these puppets were. I am certain that it is because of the talent of the puppeteers. (more...)

In this genuinely touching, original, and wickedly funny play, playwright Sarah Ruhl (The Clean House) explores relationships and sexual fulfillment while managing to stay discreetly beneath the crisp white sheets of Victorian propriety.
