BWW Review: St. Louis Actors' Studio's Amusing IVANOVBWW Review: St. Louis Actors' Studio's Amusing IVANOV
by Chris Gibson - Apr 29, 2016

IVANOV is a formative work in the canon of Anton Chekhov. He was presenting us with the situations and character types we'd come to know and understand, but with the lack of irony that often permeates his material. The St. Louis Actors' Studio has put together a splendid evening of entertainment with their superbly performed and directed production. However, it should be noted that this is a translation by Tom Stoppard, and thus, should be viewed with that in mind. Adaptations are tricky enough on their own, but when you're dealing with a play written in another language, you're often relying on a literal translation in order to produce your take. And, that's precisely what this is. It's Tom Stoppard's IVANOV, full of unexpected humor and nicely etched characterizations, but far afield from Chekhov's early foray, which he himself revised after its initial premier. Either way, this is worth checking out, and surprisingly amusing. (more...)

BWW Review: Fall Head-Over-Glass-Heels in Love with CINDERELLA at Segerstrom CenterBWW Review: Fall Head-Over-Glass-Heels in Love with CINDERELLA at Segerstrom Center
by Michael L. Quintos - Apr 27, 2016

Adorable, utterly romantic, and thoroughly winsome, this stage adaptation of Rodgers and Hammerstein's CINDERELLA is, admittedly, a wonderful surprise---filled with dazzling stage ingenuity; a dreamy, sweeping classic score by two legendary titans of musical theater; a revised, 21st-Century-tinged new book by playwright Douglas Carter Beane; magical Tony Award-winning costumes from the great William Ivey Long that will have you wondering 'how'd they do that?' and, lastly, an ensemble cast of terrific actor-singers that will have you cheering its inevitable happy-ever-after. And, if you're anything like me, you too will be easily swept up by its visual and musical loveliness and its endearing, sweet love story. The Broadway musical's Equity National Tour---now in its last weeks---has finally winded itself back to So. Cal., this time for a two-week stay at Orange County's Segerstrom Center for the Arts in Costa Mesa through May 1, 2016 (the tour then moves on from here to its final scheduled week-long stop at San Francisco's Orpheum Theatre through May 8). BWW Dance Review: CIRCO DE LA LUNA a Flair of España and Cirque IntertwinedBWW Dance Review: CIRCO DE LA LUNA a Flair of España and Cirque Intertwined
by Marsha Volgyi - Apr 27, 2016

Downtown at Baruch Performing Arts Center on April 21, 2016, Circo de la Luna performed Circo en Tres Actos. A small setting for this cutting-edge collaboration. As in any theatrical cirque-like production, there are a myriad of characters, which can be confusing. However, Circo de la Luna's storyline was concise and quirky to relate to the  life of their protagonist living in the Big Apple. Mark, the main character, struggles with fitting into a city with all the diversity of personalities, crowds, and cramped quarters. He encounters a package that opens his imagination and with inspiration. That's when our España and cirque performers appear. Mark later on envisions more characters to draw him into his moonstruck environment. To conclude the show, there was conflict from the Boeadoras of the metaphorical emotions encompassing the physical and emotional world. Yet with all that ensued Mark's chaotic city hasn't changed, but he has within. (more...)
