by Jack L. B. Gohn - Jan 30, 2016

There is no perfect way to realize Shakespeare's vision, but employing an all-female cast is apt to be among the less successful ways. In the alternative, you can say the hell with realizing Shakespeare's vision, and simply have fun with your own. And that, I think, is the approach that director Wendy C. Goldberg has chosen to pursue at Center Stage (more...)

BWW Review: THE ILLUSIONISTS Bring Their Magic Skills from B'way to Segerstrom CenterBWW Review: THE ILLUSIONISTS Bring Their Magic Skills from B'way to Segerstrom Center
by Michael L. Quintos - Feb 6, 2016

Filled with eye-popping visuals, optical trickery, risky stunts, hilarious audience participation, and lots of hammy showmanship (complete with Solid Gold-style background dancers-slash-magicians' assistants), THE ILLUSIONISTS - LIVE FROM BROADWAY is a supremely entertaining if occasionally cheesy stage show that's like several caffeinated Vegas magic shows on steroids all mashed together. The first stop of this new leg of the post-Broadway national tour is Orange County's Segerstrom Center for the Arts in Costa Mesa, where it will attempt to wow local audiences for a strictly one-week engagement until February 7. BWW Review: Lack of Chemistry Causes ANNIE GET YOUR GUN to Miss the TargetBWW Review: Lack of Chemistry Causes ANNIE GET YOUR GUN to Miss the Target
by Shari Barrett - Feb 5, 2016

Now onstage by the Aerospace Players through February 6, ANNIE GET YOUR GUN tells the story of sharpshooter Annie Oakley (Julie Hinton, a natural comedienne who perfectly inhabits the role) and her romance with Frank Butler (Stephen Cathers). Unfortunately, Cathers has no chemistry whatsoever with Hinton, and try as she might to entice him, their romance seems implausible and totally unbelievable. Without two solid leads who really appear to be in love, or at least attracted to each other physically, the musical lacks the spark needed to fuel the plot. (more...)

Irish Company Pan Pan Returning to NYC with THE SEAGULL AND OTHER BIRDS, 3/23-4/2Irish Company Pan Pan Returning to NYC with THE SEAGULL AND OTHER BIRDS, 3/23-4/2
by BWW News Desk - Feb 5, 2016

Abrons Arts Center is pleased to present the U.S. premiere of The Seagull and Other Birds by celebrated Irish theater company Pan Pan. The production, running March 26-April 2, is a roller coaster reimagining of Anton Chekhov's much-loved comic masterpiece. The performance centers around a concise new version of The Seagull integrated with works by Dick Walsh, Derrick Devine and Dan Riordan specially commissioned by the company. The Seagull and Other Birds goes inside the creative minds of Chekhov's iconic characters and imagines what creative masterpieces they might harbor - Konstantin's play is just one among many. In this wormhole of a new work performed by a cast of six, Chekhov's characters find themselves in extraordinarily different contexts: classic plays, TV shows, YouTube and stuff they've just made up. The result is playful and uncompromising - expect lots of talk about art, some action, and tons of love. (more...)
