Everyone has heard about it, all around the world. The deadliest shooting in US history happened right here, in Orlando. As actors, it's mind boggling as to why anyone would be unaccepting to others because of their sexual orientation, race, gender, or otherwise. In theatre, we are a family, and everyone is accepted. The only good that could come out of a tragedy like this is the need for the community to come together and make a statement for the LGBTQ community. As an OCPS and Winter Park High School student I got the amazing experience of singing with 400 other students and teachers the song 'Beautiful City' from Godspell. This song represented how we can come together and make Orlando beautiful again. (more...)

Happy Birthday Arthur Laurents! Laurents' first play, Home of the Brave, opened on Broadway in 1945, followed by many others. He wrote his first musical, West Side Story, in 1957, followed by Gypsy and others. His first screenplay was The Snake Pit in 1948, followed by others including Rope, Anastasia, The Way We Were and The Turning Point. His own play, Invitation to a March in 1960, was the first of several he directed. I Can Get It for You Wholesale in 1961 was the first musical he directed, followed by others including La Cage aux Folles and Gypsy with Angela Lansbury, then Tyne Daly and most recently, Patti LuPone. BWW Review: History is Musicalized at Capital Fringe With RAIN FOLLOWS THE PLOW and ROMANOV

As I scoured the Capital Fringe listings for 2016, two shows caught my interest. While both RAIN FOLLOWS THE PLOW and ROMANOV both musicalize moments in history and showcase some serious songwriting skills and musicianship, they couldn't be more different from one another stylistically. While there is considerable room for both shows to grow, a future life for both of them is definitely possible due to the strong central concepts, creativity and musical bases. (more...)

Refuge Theatre Project's BARE: A POP OPERA Begins Performances October

Refuge Theatre Project will again perform in a non-traditional space for their production of bare: a pop opera, which will complete the company's second season with a five-week run from October 7 through November 6, 2016. The sanctuary of Epworth United Methodist Church at 5253 N. Kenmore will be the stage for this sung-through musical, set in a private co-educational Roman Catholic boarding school. bare, which premiered in Los Angeles in 2000 and was mounted off-Broadway in New York in 2004, follows gay and straight teenage characters who are dealing with their emerging sexuality.
