BWW Review: Ginger Minj Spills the 'Sweet T' in Album Premiere at the Laurie Beechman Theatre
by Troy Frisby - Oct 4, 2016

A good drag queen is ready for anything, and with a dash of Southern charm and a whole lot of hairspray, RuPaul's Drag Race alum Ginger Minj gave a performance at the Laurie Beechman Theatre on September 25 that was as gleefully unpolished as it was raucously funny. Above all else, despite it being labeled an album release party, Ginger's debut album, Sweet T, actually got pushed to late October. But she didn't just roll with the punches, she seemed to delight in them, stopping at nothing to give audience members a taste of the real Ginger Minj. (more...)

by Natalie de la Garza - Oct 14, 2016

It's not easy to pin down Standing Room Only's DAYS OF FUTURE PASSED, the upcoming one-act 'special event' featuring music from the Moody Blues. It's a concert, or is it a cabaret? It's a musical, of the jukebox variety, but it's almost operatic, and a fringe theatre event. It's a journey. However you want to describe it, despite being built around music from 1967, it's definitely more than just nostalgia. (more...)

by Jay Irwin - May 16, 2016

Dear Readers, if you read my review for Part One of "The Brothers K", still playing at Book-It Repertory Theatre then you'll know the difficulties I had watching it what with all the onion cutting going on in the theater. Well last night with the premiere of "The Brothers K, Part Two: The Left Stuff" the onions were there in force along with tons of dust, pollen and cats. Must have been the case as the tears were flowing All Night Long. With just more of the same goodness from Part One, Part Two solidified just how good this story and this production is. (more...)

BWW Review: BRIDGMAN|PACKER Pack Sex and Art Into 3-D Renderings
by Juan Michael Porter II - Jul 20, 2016

If we've been here before, then why aren't the returns diminishing? The sequence repeats itself All Night Long in continuous loops and yet the eye never wanders. To the contrary one is drawn in deeper with each new repetition. Is it the weather-beaten beauty of the performers and the total investment with which they infuse every gesture? Is it the fusion of technology, holograms, and art? Looking around at the audience in The Sheen Center on July 13th, 2016, one is taken by the fact that the patrons are mature in age and completely in sync with this new mode of technology. Going off of appreciation alone, it seems that there is not a luddite in the room for this multimedia spectacle of art that would not look out of place at Coachella. This is art that “younger audiences” think of when they ask for something cool. (more...)

BWW Review: K ARTS BALLET Sets A New Standard for Excellence
by Juan Michael Porter II - Jul 13, 2016

The maxim 'Go big or go home' holds. That's one thing that can be said for Korea National University of Art's 'K Arts; Rising Stars of Korea Gala': they dance big; Bolshoi big. The leg extensions were never below 9 o'clock and more often than not floated past 12 o'clock; the pirouettes were never fewer than two and frequently zoomed from three to six; the grand jetes soared with clean splits every single time; and the manner always roared 'I LOVE TO DANCE AND I LOVE YOU TOO'! While Provincetown's Art House has become known as the East Coast's hot spot for Broadway's biggest musical stars (think Patti LuPone, Audra McDonald, Kristin Chenoweth, all of whom are headlining there this summer), the venue has an equally long and famous (or infamous as the case may intentionally be) reputation as the right coast's breeding ground for cutting-edge comedy. BWW Dance Review: YOUNGARTS is a True Mentorship Organization for the Creative
by Marsha Volgyi - Apr 21, 2016

My introduction to YoungArts happened on Wednesday evening, April 13, 2016 at Pearl Studios near Penn Station. The seventh floor of this dance facility was converted into their intensive week of interdisciplinary workshops, seminars, and master classes with renowned leaders in their fields. Since I am a dance reviewer, I was honored to observe a master class with Guest Teacher John Heginbotham. I was surprised that only five dancers were in attendance.  Usually, most master classes are packed wall-to-wall with dance students. Later on, I was informed that this intimate setting was designed like that because YoungArts wants to make sure that their artists have the dedicated attention of teachers such as Mr. Heginbotham. A quintet of an elite group. (more...)
