BWW Recap: The Dark Mute Unmasks on THE BASTARD EXECUTIONER
by Kara McCoy - Nov 3, 2015

It's been two full weeks since Lovekin became Facebook official-yes, 'Lovekin,' I worked really hard on that, okay?--so you'd think tonight's episode would be all about the forbidden romance between our favorite baroness and executioner. But no! 'Broken Things/Toredig Pethau' focuses a pretty big chunk of its attention on the FX drama's original power couple: Annora and the Dark Mute. I'll be honest, I always find myself more interested in what's happening inside Ventris Castle that out of it, but it was satisfying to finally unravel some of the mystery around the healer and her mutilated beau. 'Some,' being the key word. (more...)

BWW sat down to talk with Wright about how the project evolved over the last decade, the immersive nature of the show, and the challenges of tackling such an iconic and well known literary figure. Set in 1928, the show will feature Woolf delivering her iconic text for the very first time while guests are treated to a reception that includes live music, cash bar and light refreshments. To help create the uniquely hands-on experience, the audience will be encouraged to explore the library, read newspapers from 1928 and peruse Woolf's living quarters to get a better feel for the woman behind the iconic works. BWW Reviews: Top Notch Cast Delivers Sparkling PYGMALION
by Frank Benge - Jun 30, 2014

Doing Shaw isn't for the timid, especially for modern audiences which have become expectant of a happy ending. There's a reason why "Pygmalion" remains Shaw's most popular play which has been turned into a movie, a stage musical, and a film musical. It's a classic Cinderella story, complete with slippers… in this case, though; they're thrown rather than worn. There's even a ball - well, a couple of parties, actually. The problem is…there's no Prince Charming. This fairy tale has no happy ending. (more...)

BWW Reviews: The Charismatic BUSTER POINDEXTER Galvanizes Café Carlyle With Raucous New Show
by Alix Cohen - Feb 12, 2015

Buster Poindexter (aka David Johansen) doesn't so much play 'at' Cafe Carlyle as 'with' it. Like the bad kid from a black and white cult film, this charismatic artist establishes dominion over the highbrow room, determined to lower its bar as irrevocably as a limbo stick in a roadhouse lounge. A blistering, purposefully overwrought, genre-hopping, two-hour performance on Tuesday's opening night had even jaded waiters and busboys enthralled. (more...)

BWW Blog: Touring MARY POPPINS' Nicolas Dromard - Day #4
by Guest Blogger: Nicolas Dromard - Aug 31, 2012

Thursday. Usually a day of only one show. A day where a paycheck is magically delivered to your bank account by direct deposit or by check to your hands by a company manager... Well today was no ordinary Thursday! First of all, because it is our last week in Los Angeles, the crew will be loading out the show right after the matinee on Sunday to get it to the east coast so they changed the schedule around to have a matinee and an evening performance today. Tonight's audience was off the HOOK! They were hooting and hollering and clapping and screaming and making us feel like rockstars. I'm sorry to say that a good audience gets a better performance out of people on stage. Not that much better, but still, if we have a crowd that is incredible, the actors will be electrified and have more energy. That's just the truth. (more...)

BWW Blog: Joscelyne Tamburri - A Finale at Beauty and the Beast
by Guest Blogger: Joscelyne Tamburri - Apr 28, 2017

Well, here we are; Our last week of CCPA 2016/17. Our opening week of shows went extremely well, with a few minor 'cringy' moments - as to be expected with live theatre - but in all, it was an incredibly successful week! These unexpected ended up adding humour to the show, like when Cogsworth goes to look up with the Beast and Lumiere and say 'look at the Rose, it's wilting at an alarming rate' (or something like that), and the rose has disappeared, forcing the actors to improv while tech figures out how to get the rose back up there. Or when Babette's shoe flies off her foot in the tango, and our actress plays it off beautifully. It's that moment when at first you freak out, but 10 minutes later, you're dying of laughter from it. And, like I said, we have a great cast who can play it off so the audience doesn't know it's unintentional. My dad even asked me if Gaston's fall into the Orchestra pit (intentional) was supposed to happen because it seemed so real and spontaneous. (more...)
