CHICAGO - The Art Institute of Chicago, named the best museum in the world by TripAdvisor, and Threadless, the global design community best known for its independent artist-designed t-shirts, today announce the launch of an ongoing series of collaborative t-shirt design challenges, called the Art Institute x Threadless Explore Series. Encouraging artists to explore the artwork and exhibitions at the Art Institute, the series will kick off with Shatter Rupture Break, a t-shirt design challenge inspired by the current exhibition of the same name. Artists from around the world will have three weeks to submit their designs to the challenge, which will then be voted on by the Threadless community of more than 3 million users. The winning design will be announced and shown on April 10 at the Art Institute's After Dark event. In addition, the winning artist will receive $2,000, a modern art book library curated by the Art Institute, and his or her original design will be printed on a t-shirt for sale on Threadless.com. You probably know Gloria Reuben from the 1990s TV medical drama ER (in which she played Jeanie Boulet, an HIV-positive physician assistant on the hospital's staff). Or you may know her from playing the slave Elizabeth Keckley in the Steven Spielberg movie Lincoln. Or if you are super-cultured, you may know that she played Condoleeza Rice in David Hare's play, Stuff Happens. But I bet you didn't know that in 2000, she was one of Tina Turner's back up singers or that she began playing classical piano at age 5. But you should have known that Reuben sang at the Metropolitan Room last Thursday night to celebrate the release of her forthcoming CD, Perchance to Dream. I was there, so I now know that Gloria Reuben is not only an accomplished actor, but also a refined musician and an ethereal singer. (more...)

As if having the premier Neil Diamond tribute band at the Alhambra Theatre & Dining isn't enough, it was announced this morning by Managing Partner, Craig Smith that the Saturday evening and matinee shows on May 9 will be filmed live by an international film crew making a documentary about the popularity of tribute bands. The Alhambra launched its Alhambra After Dark music series in 2014 and has featured tributes to Elvis Presley, the Rat Pack, Kenny Rogers, Dolly Parton, Jimmy Buffett and many others. (more...)
