Porchlight Music Theatre Extends IN THE HEIGHTS Through November

Porchlight Music Theatre and Artistic Director Michael Weber are proud to announce a second extension of Porchlight's 22nd season opener, the multi-Tony Award-winning In The Heights, now playing through Saturday, Nov. 19, music and lyrics by Lin-Manuel Miranda, book by Quiara Alegria Hudes. Directed and co-choreographed by Brenda Didier, co-choreographed by Chris Carter, music directed by Diana Lawrence and assistant directed by Adrian Abel Azevedo, at Stage 773, 1225 W. Belmont Ave. The  performance times are Thursdays at 7:30 p.m., Fridays at 8 p.m., Saturdays at 4 and 8 p.m. and Sundays at 2 p.m. with an added Thursday matinee, October 6 at 1:30 p.m. There is no 7:30 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 6. Just In: Stardust Diner Family United Says '15 Employees Fired in Retaliation of Union Activity'

Just in via Stardust Family United, the newly established union for Ellen's Stardust Diner employees. 'Last week, servers at the famed Ellen's Stardust Diner put down their microphones and held up ketchup bottles in response to now 15 of their co-workers terminated for their support of the newly established Stardust Family United, a branch of the IWW (the singing union). After weeks of the union asking to meet, Ken Sturm, the owner of Ellen's Stardust Diner, still refused to sit down with union members and discuss their concerns. The Stardusters began peacefully protesting outside the diner, singing songs of solidarity and holding signs on September 14th, demanding the immediate cessation of unfair labor practices in the reinstatement of employees terminated in retaliation for union organizing. The annual DreamBall gala benefits the Look Good Feel Better program. For 27 years, Look Good Feel Better has been the only free, nationwide program dedicated to helping cancer patients address the appearance side effects of treatment to improve their self-esteem and confidence.  Look Good Feel Better is offered through a collaboration of the Personal Care Products Council Foundation, the American Cancer Society and the Professional Beauty Association. Trap Door Theatre Presents FANTASY ISLAND FOR DUMMIES

Fantasy Island for Dummies (low cut daydream too near, too near) is a new music-theatre work inspired by an episode of the iconic television series about the pleasures and perils of wish fulfillment. Devised in a collaborative exploration with Trap Door Theater actors, the piece is written by Ruth Margraff and directed by Kate Hendrickson, with original music composed by Pink Velvet. A 1980 "Fantasy Island" episode about a ventriloquist and her devious dummy inspires a voyage into suppressed identities, ancient Babylonian sex goddesses, and a "perfect wife" struggling with her defiant side.  (more...)

In The Artistic Home's production of Anton Chekhov's classic comedy of unrequited love and unrealized dreams, The Seagull, Company Artistic Director Kathy Scambiatterra (a Jeff Award nominee for The Artistic Home's Sweet Bird of Youth) plays the role of Madame Arkadina, the fading actress in love with a younger man, Trigorin. Scot West, previously seen at The Artistic Home in Watch on the Rhine, Interrogation and Miracle on 34th Street and in Griffin's Men Should Weep is the writer Trigorin. Brookelyn Hebert, of AH's Macbeth and Cut to the Chase, plays the young actress Nina, who is a rival to Arkadina for Trigorin's affections. In the role of Arkadina's son Konstantin, who competes with Trigorin for Nina's love, is AH ensemble member Julian Hester, a Jeff nominee for The Late Henry Moss. (more...)

AMA Announces ART AFTER DARK 7: CARIBBEAN IN MOTION, 9/1

AMA | Art Museum of the Americas of the Organization of American States (OAS) and the Friends of AMA announce Art After Dark 7: Caribbean in Motion. The popular after-hours event brings art and music lovers together for one night to celebrate al fresco in the lush French gardens of the OAS. The main visual backdrop of this year's event consists of large-scale video art projections on the OAS's historic building façade, produced by video artists throughout the Caribbean, and selected from a pool of entries by our friends at IDB Creativity. DC's finest electro-pop band Incredible Change will perform a live set. DJ Shea Van Horn will keep the crowd moving throughout the night, and performance artist Carolina Mayorga will present La Vie en Rose-2. Additional performers will be announced in the days ahead.
