BWW Reviews: Mark Dendy Complicates Astor Place HistoryBWW Reviews: Mark Dendy Complicates Astor Place History
by Lauren Wingenroth - May 12, 2015

Books are the structure around which Mark Dendy's NEWYORKnewyork @ Astor Place is built. The cramped Joe's Pub stage is set with an abstracted skyline of books, soon to be destroyed by Mei Yamanaka as she embodies the forces of gentrification that Dendy not-so-subtly suggests are destroying our twice-named city. The piece itself is painstakingly researched, pulling together historical moments from 1848 to the present to tell the story of the Astor Place Library (where the Public Theater now sits), a story intertwined with the artists and activists it housed, displaced, informed, and inflamed. Aka Lockord Reinvents Shakespeare's FALSTAFFAka Lockord Reinvents Shakespeare's FALSTAFF
by BWW News Desk - Mar 6, 2012

Fat, impudent and cowardly, Shakespeare's Falstaff character was a compelling tub of lard, a Homer Simpson centuries before his time. Falstaff has been revived many times in plays, films and operas, and he returns once more in "The Mystery Call Girls Riot: And Other Sad Events Relating to the Incarnation of Mystery Call" (ISBN 1470000784) by Aka Lockord. Although this lively retelling of Shakespeare's "The Merry Wives of Windsor," may question some 21st century notions, it is set in the American West during a period when ranches (to save fuel for the mechanized war effort) relied on horses for power. That practice continued for some years after World War II. (more...)

by BWW News Desk - Jul 28, 2014

Filthy traitor or silly duffer? This is the question at the centre of The Court Theatre's new production Plum, written by Roy Smiles. Plum brings to the stage the most critical time in the life of popular 20th century writer, humourist and lyricist PG Wodehouse - or Plum as he was known to his friends. "Wodehouse was then and remains one of the few authors who can make me laugh out loud," says playwright Roy Smiles. "Reading his books in a 1970s Britain scarred with National Front skinheads, strikes, race riots and IRA bombs it was deeply comforting escapism." (more...)

Apparently, not all upper west side Jewish families spend Christmas Day going out for Chinese food and a movie.  Take the extended family of Richard Greenberg's The Assembled Parties, who spend two December 25ths, twenty years apart, in a perfunctory celebration of the holiday while complaining about the inability to find a plumber to come right over fix a leaky pipe (Even when offered a 'Nativity surcharge.') and referring to the season's continual playing of Bing Crosby singing 'White Christmas' as, 'a tiny acoustic rape every time you leave the apartment.'
